Demonoid Trackers Back Online, Site Still Down
Written by Ernesto on September 29, 2007Demonoid.com mysteriously disappeared earlier this week, but there is hope. The website is still down but the trackers are now fully operational again, perhaps a sign that Demonoid is crawling back up?
The demonoid downtime caused quite some controversy, especially after the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reported that the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) was responsible for the downtime.
We contacted both the CRIA and Demonoid’s ISP in an attempt to confirm the story, but they didn’t want to respond to these allegations. Both parties confirmed nor denied their involvement. In addition, we tried to get an official response from Deimos, the founder and the head admin of Demonoid, unfortunately without any result.
The general consensus in the Demonoid IRC channel now is that the downtime is caused by hardware issues, and that the site will probably return within a few days.
Others still think that the Canadian ISP took Demonoid offline after they received legal threats (from the CRIA), but this is just speculation at this point. Demonoid’s ISP said earlier that it would not hesitate to pull the plug on Demonoid if they had to, however, this explanation is less plausible now because the trackers still run on the same IP. This indicates that the servers are still hosted by their Canadian ISP.
It is great to see that the second largest BitTorrent tracker is back in action. Thousands of torrents stopped responding when the tracker went down, frustrating over a million BitTorrent users. I guess it’s time to finish these torrents.

Sabbin1891, eh? Apparently you can’t read at all: You completely missed the point I had made earlier. For starters, you are ruining the memories of one of my favorite final fantasy characters by not spelling his name right: there is only one b, you ignorant imbecile. In addition to not being good with words, I have concluded that you are just as bad with numbers: it’s 1981, not 1891. And to finish off, the proper spelling is Apparatus, not aparattus, as you so ignorantly wrote — notice how I capialize Apparatus, because it has taken on the form of a proper noun, ie my name, instead of a standard, “common” noun. Here’s a free lesson: an apparatus is a device used for specific purpose. Now you can say you’ve learned something. You’re not completely stupid anymore. And with that, I’m most likely out of here, before anyone decides to take on the habit of pretending to be me, and doing so with horrid grammar.

4) demonoid.com databases track the amount you download/upload by monitoring your IP address.
5) demonoid.com databases do not track what you have downloaded in the past (or this data is encrypted).
6) If the tracker is in unsafe hands and if you are currently downloading a copyrighted material with the current tracker and if you have uploaded terabytes (few hundred gigabytes?) of data in the past, your IP can be matched and they may file a lawsuit against you (probably they will only select a few dozen cases and not waste their time and money).

There isn’t reason to believe that demonoid servers are in the hands of any anti piracy group. You can speculate all you want, but no facts point towards that even remotely.

Secondly there is NO moderation to speak of. Anyone can post anything they wish and not worry about being racist, offensive, aggressive, inflammatory or anything of the kind?
