The Pirate Bay: Demonoid is Welcome in Sweden
Written by Ernesto on January 16, 2008After two months of downtime, it is still uncertain whether Demonoid will ever return. However, if it is up to The Pirate Bay, it will. The Pirate Bay has recently offered 2 servers to the Demonoid team, in Sweden of course.
Will Demonoid ever return? That was the question we asked last December. There was some hope for the thousands of Demonoid users when Deimos, the founder of the site, said that he was looking for a new location to host the popular BitTorrent tracker. He said: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”
It now seems that there’s some good news for Deimos as The Pirate Bay is offering their help. In fact, they claim to have two servers lined up for Demonoid already. Pirate Bay’s Brokep made this public in a recent interview on the Subdemon techcast where he said: “We tried to contact the guys behind Demonoid and we’ve set up a tracker for them but they haven’t responded. But, we have two servers running for them if they want to set it up.” Brokep also says that he hasn’t heard back from Deimos yet, but it sure is a great gesture.
If Demonoid decides to take them up on their offer they will not be alone. In 2007 quite a lot of torrent sites moved to Sweden, and to PRQ in particular. Sweden is considered to be a safe haven for BitTorrent sites, and PRQ is popular because it is owned by TiAMO and Anakata, two of the founders of The Pirate Bay. Ironically, however, The Pirate Bay is not hosted in Sweden or at PRQ, which is probably a wise decision.
In the remainder of the interview Brokep and the interviewers discuss some of the recent news surrounding The Pirate Bay, such as the huge pile of paperwork they received last month, the new protocol they have been developing, and the explosive growth of their tracker. It is definitely worth listening to, and I’m looking forward to the next episodes of this podcast, and to more news surrounding Demonoid.

every torrent had Screens and most had a good discription and good speed and usually where the first on the net… even beatin a few of the most popular “private” sites….

Nothing against pirate bay because they are incredible, but private trackers GENERALLY have better content.
When content is leaked from demonoid onto public trackers and indexing sites, it doesnt really matter because at least demonoid still had the correct stuff, besides…it gave more seeders =D

I feel that if Deimos doesn’t accept this (assuming TPB isn’t actually charging an arm and leg for them) then demonoid is really gone for good. I’ve been wondering for a while whether he is even trying to get it back up or just enjoying the break (which is within his rights). This forces the issue and brings everything to a clear ‘is demonoid really coming back’.

Demonoid always had the best content I could find anywhere. Since you had to register and there were few accounts, there were no bots or craptorrents. Demonoid always had the best selection of comics I could find. Nowhere compared. Since demonoid has passed, I’ve been scavenging for comics, and barely finding anything. I hope demonoid comes back.

According to a Geo-IP lookup, thepiratebay.org is hosted at a Port80 facility in Stockholm.
Unless… traffic destined to that IP address is rerouted behind the scenes to a servers outside the country. Clever!
As much as I miss DEMONOID I hope that they do what is best for them. I really hope they open another site if that is best for them!

hmmm nearly all of there webserver are hosted in Sweden! and trackers in the Netherlands with nforce(leaseweb) I don’t doubt they’ll have other servers but 2 of there ranges are allocated to the same kit/servers.

I’m pretty sure you’re incorrect. The Whois database lists them as located in Stockholm sweden, with prq.se as the mail domain name.

First of all, big thanks to Ernesto for covering our podcast, it really generated some hits for us…
To address some of the things mentioned here would be a waste of time, as every form of media will always receive negative criticism.
The only thing that I will address is the “mystery” location of TPB’s servers. This isn’t some claim that we made up, in the podcast Peter himself asserts that THE BULK of TPB’s traffic is handled elsewhere, the fact that “whois” points to PRQ is basically null..
But again, big thanks to Ernesto for the coverage, hopefully our work can parallel in the future, TF does a great job.

Every time I hear of someone making an apparently altruistic offer I think 3 things. 1 who has the gun2where is my wallet3 will they at least wear a condom when they try to f**k me.
TPB may just be the exception but I won’t believe it until I see it. Think of it this way, what better way to give the Swedish prosecutor an ulcer than to have two or more giants to go after.
Another point that was made in the original posting was that Deimos said that he was having RL stuff that was making things difficult. And if I’m not mistaken there was a financial consideration too.
I’d love to have Demonoid back and I’d be ecstatic if TPB was to help out with the resurrection. But I won’t lay out any bets on it. If you don’t hear anything in a month or so I’d say “stick a fork in it, it’s done”.

Without Demonoid, bit torrent just hasn’t been the same. I’m sorry fellow OinKers, the loss of Demonoid was a far greater hit to bot-torrent, than the loss of OinK. I regret to inform you, but Deimos died two weeks ago from prostate cancer. I only found out today, when I tried to contact him in Brazil, about a business matter. His wife and son are totally devastated.

The subdemon.com website hosted out of Dallas, Texas is a total ripoff.
All they do is stuff the site full of banner ads and then make money off of people moaning about demonoid.
Many people there actually expect to see demonoid come back and any comments to the contrary brings the poster automatic muting and banning.
I have yet to see any posts from Deimos that actually state that demonoid will come back - it is very likely the whole userbase has been hijacked and is just being used to get page views for the banner ads.
What a horrible ending to what was at one time an excellent service.

Demonoid had a good selection, I could always find something on the fly and just get it without going through this big ritual-type deal like on supposed scene private sites. I hope he takes up the offer.

For thosse that refuse to google and just keep reading the subdemonoid forums that are directed to misdirect alot of people ie..the law this is the new site it started from scratch and you can find archives about demois setting this site up. All it takes is for the people to know, and add torrents and bam you have a new demonoid. I ALSO KNOW BECAUSE I GOT A EMAIL FROM THE SITE TELLING ME THE DETAILS A MONTH AFTER I HAD SIGNED UP. Torrentstorage.com is not the new Demonoid. Do a whois lookup on the domain and see that it is registered by Godaddy. Would Deimos register through Godaddy? I seriously doubt it. If that doesn’t convince you then ping the domain and see what IP address you get. Do a location lookup on that IP and see that it is hosted in Michigan! If I can do this than you know the MPAA knows how to do this. How long do you think it will take to shut this site down… IF it’s not the MPAA behind it???

I’m downloading from Pirate Bay trackers now and it’s like pulling teeth. Without restricted registrations you end up with a bunch of selfish kids, shooting themselves in the feet by not sharing.
