Demonoid: Will The Comeback Kid Return?

Today it’s been one month since Demonoid was driven offline by a massive DDoS attack. In the weeks that followed things went from bad to worse and the site’s Ukrainian hosting provider eventually pulled the plug on the site following a request from Mexican authorities. Despite the legal trouble, many of the site’s former users are refusing to give up hope that Demonoid will live up to its reputation as the comeback kid.

demonoidWhen Demonoid went down at the end of July the site’s admin blamed a DDoS attack. This initial attack resulted in a series of problems that were not easy to fix.

However, at the time the tech admin of the site was determined to get the site back online.

“You know how it goes with Demonoid. It might take a while but it will come back,” the admin told us.

The admin was referring to Demonoid’s reputation as the comeback kid, but a return became less likely during the weeks that followed. After being driven offline by a DDoS and suspected hacker attack, a few days later the news broke that Demonoid’s servers had been shutdown in the Ukraine.

The action followed a request from Interpol, who assisted Mexican authorities in their criminal investigation into the BitTorrent tracker and its operators. With the site offline, Demonoid’s millions of members could no longer access the database of nearly 400,000 torrent files.

Despite the serious legal issues, many of the site’s users haven’t given up hope that Demonoid will rise once again from its digital grave to make a blazing comeback. If it did, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Over the years Demonoid has been blighted with more than its fair share of downtime. In June 2007 the site went offline after it was pressured to leave its host in the Netherlands, mainly because of legal threats from Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN.

The site then relocated to Canada, but after threats from the CRIA it decided to shut down there as well. Early 2008 the site eventually reappeared in full glory after being offline for six months.

In September 2009 the site went offline again due to hardware problems and subsequent data loss. The BitTorrent tracker eventually reappeared two months later around Christmas and continued business as usual.

In the years that followed Demonoid regularly had outages of a day or two, sometimes citing DDoS attacks, but the site always reappeared.

This time the situation is different though, as the Mexican authorities are determined to keep the site offline. It was previously confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway in the country and that a number of arrests and seizures have been carried out.

These events may be the reason why many staffers decided to cut their ties with the site over the past year.

Despite the legal trouble the operator of another major BitTorrent site told TorrentFreak that he’s willing to help the tracker get back on its feet, but the Demonoid team are yet to respond to this request.

At this point it is even unknown whether the Demonoid team had backups in place to make a return possible. The decision from Demonoid’s owner to put the domain names up for sale only added to the uncertainty.

So will Demonoid be able to make a comeback? Even those who are optimistic by nature have to agree that Demonoid’s future is looking grim, but in looking to the future true Demonoid fans will never give up hope.

you mean the registered users relied on it. the rest of the people had guest passes that only allowed them to download a few torrents a month. which didn’t allow vary much freedom for information. In a way, I’m glad they are dead. but I’m sad that all the potential information is lost because there was little ways to keep that information floating in the cloud.

that is the downside for semi private trackers. once its gone, its gone. only the elite has the power to share that information if they wanted to.

        • John Spartan

The last time I visited Demonoid, I was able to download any torrent, uploaded whenever, without logging in. They removed that guest restriction a long time ago, its been that way for atleast the last year.

And if your not an idiot you easily would have found out that demonoid opened registration to ALL  at random times,  that’s how I got my golden ticket.

        • Dem

Your missing one big thing, registrations were open from time to time, sometimes once a week! so if you bothered to look a bit you could of been downloading all the torrents as a member! Glad they are dead? Then why were you downloading as much as possible from there lol, Cos it was the best torrent site!
There aint no downside of semi private trackers, They are safer, have great communities, Seems like your a free rider, want to grab everything and run and not contribute to a quality site, Did you ever upload a quality torrent, seed anything, Answer NO! cos you could not even be bothered to visit demonoid regular to find oh yes you could register! LOL
Think before you comment, Would you be glad if the pirate bay was gone too and you do love the site don`t you!

Dissagree, it is not hard to snag an ivite to such a site, and there are a few other extremely reliable private trackers out there ( I will not name due to security’s sake) you just need to know where to look. If you have the proper interwebz skills there is no stopping it!!

The fly-by-nites with very low share ratios were ;/ are just bloodsuckers who drag the entire filesharing system down

        • http://twitter.com/ChocalateWhite Tim Clark

wtf are you talking about? what are “guest passes” ? — Demonoid operated as a public tracker with an option to register as a member of the site but it was not required to search & download through their index of torrent files… Membership of the site gave you upload privileges and less banners… I believe there were absolutely no ads loading for users who kept a ratio higher than 1:1

So yeah, back to my original point: Shut the fuck up Luke. If you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about then how the fuck are you going to expect to get away with it on the internet of all places? Normally I’d just recognize you as a troll, neglect to feed you and move on but I don’t think you are a troll… I don’t get that troll vibe or smell from you.. You know that place that exists right after you hear a question that you know you know the answer to and right before you actually find that answer in your head? That sort of “Derrrrrrr” state of mind. That’s you, isn’t it? You are Derrrrrr incarnate.

        • Moldyraven

Luke, you either havent been to demonoid for a LONG time, or you are just way too stupid to operate a computer. Anyone can download from demonoid. And whats this about “the elite”? You say that like you are some torrent guru that runs a multimillion dollar torrent site. Demonoid was a great place to everyone. Just cause you need some “intro to computers’ classes, dont knock demonoid.

Demonoid had content not easily found elsewhere, but it was the more obscure stuff. If the majority of your downloads were new and/or fairly mainstream then yes you would not need this site.  However the more obscure could be found there when it could not in other places.  For instance Demonoid was one of the leading indexers of comics and manga.  Also old tv series like the early episodes of fifth gear or obscure things like top gear australia and top gear russia.  For those saying it had 0 unique, obviously they have not used the site to its maximum potential and/or all they want is new and/or mainsteam/pop media.  Good luck finding uploads for the old and obscure and hard to find on other public sites, and even if you do it is another thing entirely for it to have seeders.  Demonoid we miss you.

Also just to clarify as most articles seem to have it wrong, as did a lot of Demonoid users for that matter.  Demonoid was a semi-private site with a fully public tracker.  Meaning the site needed membership (to an extent…) but anyone could connect to a Demonoid tracker and download without a Demonoid site membership if that tracker was attached to an upload on TPB or another public site.  This would often catch members out as it would still affect their ratio even though the download wasn’t directly from the Demonoid site.

        • Freddy

Certain users would’ve never had a need for it, true.
Other users would’ve never had a need for any other site besides Demonoid.

It all depends on the “mainstream” factor of what you prefer to DL.

        • Cybercrawler

ha 1337x there are no f$%^&ing seeds on that site, what a joke. unless you are looking at getting something upload 10 minutes ago. plus look at the tracker on half of thier crap….. what does it say. Just downloaded a e-book for android 4 and in the damn torrent a file with this “Torrent downloaded from http://www.Demonoid.me“. Ya Demonoid had nothing you are totally right………

“For example 1337x and torlock.com has verified only torrents so never needed anything else.”
As someone who uploaded to demonoid I can assure you that the same uploads are also on both the sites you mentioned.
Demonoid also had verified only content.
What I will miss is the excellent community that praised and trashed mine and others uploads.
The comments section were always a source of information, amusement and well informed criticism.
To get that type of community back on one site will be very difficult to do :(
The rarity of some of the content was also a goldmine.

“If you never used them, you probably have no idea of the quality and diversity they had.”

That’s just not the pirate spirit old boy!

Everyone who used Demonoid knows why it was so special. What made it special can be regenerated elsewhere as long as people are willing to work together to make it so. The Pirate Bay and Newzbin have led the way with .onion (Tor) addresses, more sites need to follow their lead. Let us create new sites whether Demonoid returns or not and make them more resilient to censorship by using Tor and i2p. Use the template Demonoid gave us and spread it hydra style.

No Rumor at all.New stuff was there of course but people did keep alive a bunch of older more obscure Titles. You could find many older Documentaries and Foreign Films.I found a bunch of Russian WW2 Films not released in the Western World with someone’s homemade subtitles.

if the site could stay up long enough to be of use with the 14+ down times some of which were rather lengthy maybe

why bother with a site that can’t stay up ? combined with the private nature of it.. its sort of like relying on filelockers services only to have them disappear and your data gone.

that is the downside for semi private trackers. once its gone, its gone.
as said by Luke SolisAnd i still don;t believe half of what Deimos has said. DDOS ?Or did the hoster shut you down and instead of telling people the truth you make up a story about hackers ? Ya right..I’d have some sympathy for the guy *if I felt he had been honest through the years.I think the site sucked. and since i’ve gone to extreme lengths to say why i won’t bother repeating myself.. besides it won’t matter anyways because the fanboys think that was the best place on the net lolSo if he comes back online i won’t rejoin. too much BS from the admin plus too much down time. Torrent trackers that can’t stay up are useless .

      • jeff goldmaster

The fact that they didnt have a game plan if their current service provider bailed on them, is a bit of proof that Demonoid is not very resilient. Also, they got their servers punked and somehow have no backups to get the site up and running?

I know its probably a bit harder than that considering the effort law enforcement is using to find and shut them down.

Demonoid was caught with its pants down. Resilients and persistence is what quality torrent sites need to survive, not just rare and diverse torrents.

I really liked demonoid, and I am bummed they are gone. I could only get certain files and updates there. Hopefully those great uploaders will find other sites to uoload their content.

I don’t think the Demonoid admins put the domains up for sale deliberately. I reckon they just parked them at Sedo to generate some revenue whilst they are/where offline.

Domains added to the Sedo parking plarform are set for sale by default and have the ‘buy this domain’ link on the parked page lander.

I don’t see it returning at all, not with whats happening to the administrator and the hardware being seized. Generally when those things happen the site does not return, unless the admin happens to be acquitted then the site may return just under a new domain. that’s the only way I see the legend returning!

    • ray

I understand your reasoning but this happened before and demonoid still came up. it has a reputation of coming back. I don’t see any reason it shouldn’t be back . i would give it 6 to 10 months to come back. It was the best torrent site in the world. It had almost everything.

    • Noneya

No hardware was seized. Colocall already replied that they chose to end the business relationship with Demonoid and it has nothing to do with any authorities.

Nothing happen to the administrator.  Nobody in Mexico is involved with Demonoid. I don’t know what Mexico is having to do with this.

Mexico should worry about the drug problems instead.

It does not matter that the hardware was seized all that is needed is a backup of the site and it can return, you can have a backup on your own pc or anywhere which could allow it to come back but if there was no backup then you would be correct, What matters is was there a backup? Where would it be hosted? The only other thing everyone could do is create a brand new site like demonoid, Any people could get together and create one if only there was some hosting, people who can code, people who can create a tracker and there we could all get the perfect site, I do hope it may return but I`m not sure it will, Come on tech bloke from demonoid, did you have a backup? Do you want it back?

  • TheEmpathicEar

It was useful in many ways. For example, it seemed that more chess related torrents were uploaded there than in other sites.

Yup it’s where I’ve always gone for my uncommon content. I’m a member of some mid-range private trackers, but 9/10 I would be surfing Demonoid instead because those private trackers had so little content comparatively. Content-wise, Demonoid was the supreme leader. There is nothing out there currently that even comes close to replacing it. I’m actually going a little insane atm. We should as a community, put our heads together and build a brand new tracker from the ashes of our beloved site.

You keep making these spirited comments about everyone uniting and doing the work to bring it back. It’s a nice sentiment and all I guess, but you don’t seem too pragmatic. I find it ironic that the Mexican government is totally ineffective in stopping the wholesale slaughter of its citizens in the streets by the drug gangs that seem to have taken over the country…

…but they can quickly start a “criminal investigation” that shuts down a measly server in a country 10,000 miles away.

This whole matter stinks to high heaven. Given the way the Mexican government has operated for decades, I suspect that a gigantic bribe has been paid for this to happen. Either that, or this is one more case of political pandering (sucking up) to the US government.

    • TheEmpathicEar

      It’s ironic…

Yup the Mexican government is pandering to its elites, while the common people are killed by the thousands. Some government I tell you. Someday the people should revolt against their piece of shit government in order to restore some sense of credibility in their authorities.

      • Reality

Easy solution: tell your fat, ugly American Mom to stop smoking dope and helping send 6 Billion a year to the drug cartels in Mexico.  Oh, and stop voting for Republicans because Rush Limpballs told you to, so we can put some regulations at the border and keep the US gun dealers from sending wholesale guns down there.  You do know that 80% of all weapons seized from the cartels comes from the USA?

        • Zebra52

How about keeping their citizens from crossing the border illegaly into the U.S.

        • Guest

Alright, you don’t seem to like reading the truth about Mexico.  I don’t care if you hate Americans and are from Mexico – your government is a pile of shit that can’t control the raging drug cartel violence and the massive amounts of immigrants hopping the border to the US.  Deal with it.

        • Jtltoy

Obama sent over 200 guns down to the cartels. And some of them killed American citizens. So maybe we shouldn’t vote Democrap.

‘Muricans stealing copyrighted material and hurting our economy = GOOD

PLEASE,Demonoid, come back,i would rather pay demonoid than get torrents free from other places. The reason is that demonoid had more and better torrents, effective comment section. Actually the comment section is what made Demonoid the best other than total torrents available !!

    • xpmule

someone needs to put up a list of torrent trackers and search sites before more of these guys throw away their money..

      • Freddy

Yea $10 here and there for thousands of dollars of content is throwing away their money, smart one. Supporting something you wish to endure is such a throw away of money. Showing your appreciation and helping support the site and the people who run it is such a waste of money.

I got an out of print book on Demonoid that sells for no less than $275 used. I could never find it on any of the other trackers. That’s just one of many such cases. If I were to donate after that, I don’t think saving hundreds of dollars would’ve felt like a waste of money.

i certainly hope Demonoid makes a comeback but i think it is unlikely. the problem is that the entertainment industries, being unable/unwilling to adapt to the digital age are employing any and all tactics they can think of to retain the control they are used to having. those tactics include lying to and bribing as many politicians, in as many governments as possible so as to get new, overly harsh laws introduced, laws that are worse than when ‘real crimes’ are committed, and forcing cooperation between  governments because of threats from the US government if refusing to help. Sweden was the classic example over TPB spectrial. no one in their right mind would concentrate the resources that have been wasted on ‘file sharing’ as opposed to any other so called ‘crime’ unless there were ulterior motives. atm we can only speculate at those motives are but sooner or later the truth will come out and i suspect there will be a lot of people running for cover from the amount of shit that will hit fan!

  • Ret_strife

Corny yeh but like the dark knight rises, demonoid will rise too.

  • Notpreaching

Demonoid had a great reputation for content diversity, longevity, &
resilience, BUT… there are some real issues that become transparent
from this attempt to thwart our freedom to share.

    1. exclusivity creates division, and private trackers make it easier to pin-point and pick off targets.

    2. private trackers destroy the very essence of decentralization. do we
actually think that our privacy is being hidden because we use a
private tracker? do we really think that our private sites have not
been infiltrated by the trolls & the feds? the smaller the pond the
easier it is to shoot the fish.

    3. open trackers create an open net.  if we truly care about an
OPEN-WEB, then we publicly announce our trackers & stop this private
    crap. if we attempt to
restrict content from some of the people, then all of the people will
    loose!

the only way we can end this digital war and secure our rights is to
stand TOGETHER. we need to stop alienating people from being able to
stand with us as we move forward in this crucial point of the movement. Thomas Jefferson was quoted as saying:

“A democracy is nothing more than mob
rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of
    the other forty-nine.”

we are the majority and united the world can stand against this threat. divided we all fall!

    • Gupta

Demonoid was ASSHOILES they wouldn’t let me download anything. ASSHOLES private trackers are for ASSHOLES. ok/

    • juan3

Notpreaching, you put it beautifully.  We need to keep our torrents in the open, and all work together.

Many Demonoid users have gone over to KAT (Kick Ass Torrents).  They have been well received and added much to an already great community.  There is no need to embarrass oneself by begging for an invitation.  KAT welcomes all, and the more good people who join the stronger and more enjoyable the group becomes.

      • Freddy

There are all these people who prefer private trackers and I just don’t get it. If an organization wanted to track folks on a public tracker they’d have to deal with thousands and thousands of downloaders/uploaders to pursue. Being a part of one of these private trackers that are hard to get into is like being fish in a barrel. There’s so few of you in such a small space that it won’t be hard for every member there to be tracked by whatever unsavory organization gets in. If you can get invited, so can one of the people you’re trying to avoid with your so-called “private” tracker.

    • Anyone

private trackers make the exact same mistake the MAFIAA makes, trying to make an endless ressource scarce

  • austinhamman

they should put the site up as a hidden service on tor. it won’t matter where the server is (the tracker could be separate from the front end web service. and distributed around the globe. since i dont think most torrent programs allow for a tor address as a tracker address) and it can be made accessible to non-tor people using tor2web. can be made more memorable using a url shortener like tinyurl.
in this way, while it might be a bit slower(the webpage not the torrents), it would be nearly impossible to take offline.
to note: this protects the website, not the people downloading. but nothing has really changed there.

    • Guest

we do not need to hide it. we need to open it up & spread it out it and make it so everyone can use it.  4 people in front of the courthouse can be silenced. 400,000 cannot. if we all stop hiding in the shadows, we will find that we are much larger & more powerful than anyone gives us credit for. the reason they keep gaining ground is that we are all fighting in small separate groups instead of standing as one complete unit.

      • Tracy

Putting sites up as hidden services is a good thing my dear guest. Think of it as insurance against censorship. Besides, it would encourage more people to use the Tor network.

  • ThumbsUpThumbsDown

This ability to rise reborn from unexpected catastrophy is, perhaps, the single most difficult, and most unlikely aspect of success.

Most creative entrepeneurs who succeed. spend their lives on the knife’s edge of failure; and, never is their Failure more certain than when their success is most “proven”, and, when they find themselves awash in infinite money and personal glory.

Most of us would gladly settle for such a Life of “Problems”.  Yet, the point; that those of us who can learn how to do what is necessary for economic success in our lifetime are less likely to know, or to be able to learn, how to keep the wealth we produce, or how to be able to bestow the enterprises we create with survivability beyond our stewardship, calls for understanding.

    Why?

Because it explains that the vast majority of new vast wealth and new competitive enterprises are NOT effectively dynastic…..ie, they don’t pass on very well to future generations…..Which…..Brings us back to Demonoid…..

Demonoid is on the knife’s edge of this problem:  It is Massive Success on the knife’s edge of Failure…..

So, what explains this recurring dilemma?

I submit to you, that the answer to this question lies in the fact that it is only natural for newly successful entrepeneurs to spend their lives planning elaborately for success; rather than planning elaborately for failure.  Yet, in the entrepeneural ecosystem, it is FAILURE that is the recurrent norm, not success.

This is the economic distinction between Insight and Foresight:  Insight explains why you are successful today……..Foresight explains why you are also successful into the indefinite Future.

The Admins of both, MegaUpload and Demonoid, need this understanding.

    Why?

Because there is valid doubt that either of these companies PLANNED adequately for these predictable failures; and, if they survive their current grevious circumstances, it is THIS understanding that will make them better and more survivable.

have only dealt with demonoid since ’08, since the attack I found where I can get movies n stuff but not where to get comics…any suggestions?

    • jslap

you can try h33t for comics. it has some but nothing compared to demonoid. I am also looking for an alternative.

      • Freddy

That’s the only thing I really miss. I can make do with the crappy search functions on other sites, but there’s been at least 10 comics so far that I can’t find anywhere else that I know would’ve been on demonoid.

I went on a 2 month binge and have like 3TB of comics that I got just from Demonoid, but I still didn’t get everything that had caught my eye and I have no idea where those uploaders went, if anywhere.

  • Jonathan1243

    Long LIVE DEMONOID!

  • Rekrul

All the major torrent sites should make a backup of all the torrents, pack it into one giant RAR file and put it up for download. It should be updated every day, or at least once a week.

Sure, not everyone would have the desire or the bandwidth to download it, but some would. This way, even if the site gets taken down, the torrents can live on.

Ya know, I loved Demonoid. At least if this one AWESOME torrent site is down, we will always have more. No matter how many hackers the ass holes in charge can pay to fuck up the internet, we still have millions on the side of the people. Fuck the people who say you’re stealing our ideas. Has the fashion industry died because people steal their ideas? NO. They make the same amount of money. You sell out assholes are just butt hurt cus your modern games and movies are shit that people don’t want to pay for until they know it’s worth it. Seriously, what is the difference between waiting for a movie to play on tv before you buy the DVD, and Playing the demo of a video game. Your checkbooks and fake economics, that’s what. Good luck in beating the hackers, cus your game or movie is nothing without people willing to shell out cash.

    • Yummtongue

      I’m with you, Bro….

    • Freddy

I torrrent too much for my own good so I’m no saint, but I gotta address something you said:

“Seriously, what is the difference between waiting for a movie to play on tv before you buy the DVD”

Well most movies cost millions of dollars to make. When they’re shown on TV they still make a small amount of that money back because networks purchase the rights to air the movies for a few million dollars each. The movie makes none of its budget back when you download it from a torrent site.

  • http://twitter.com/CleevesMort Cleeves

Using the internet now feels like there is a huge gap without Demonoid
i probably spent 75% of my time browsing the site and downloaded tons of priceless films and music which luckily i stuck on to discs
Demonoid was a cut above and immeasureably preferable to piratebay
i and many others look forward to seeing you again
as a previous poster stated,if a small contribution from users was needed i would be more than willing to pay
    good luck Demonoid,see you soon!

    • ScrewEwe2

Better get a big external hard drive or two and start transfering your collections from discs 2 drives. Disc’s can degrade pretty quickly. I’ve got about 20 terabytes of external drive space that is only used for archival purposes.

      • haruspex

You might want to do some research… drives are not archival at all…

        • ScrewEwe2

You’ve got a good point haruspex. You should probably transfer the data from one drive to another periodically just to make sure the magnetic data on the platters doesn’t degrade. I would think that if you do this as a maintenance routine every 3 or 4 years you would be in good shape. Compared to storing data, lets say DVD movies on home burnt DVD’s I know from experience that hard drives last longer, even if your using so called “archival” quality media burnt at 4x. The sad truth is that nothing, including us lasts forever (except what we do on the internet).

        • Freddy

Well if you really want to get technical…it doesn’t matter whether you use discs or externals, so long as you have 2 of everything. If you have a drive filled with 4TB of data, you sure as hell better have another drive backing up that 4TB of data, or Data DVDs with that data (that would be a lot of burning…)

I know of many people, and have read the woes of others, who have had external hard drives fail, some within weeks of purchasing them. Not to the mention the possibility of theft and damage.

And if you really want to be intelligent about it, you’d make sure to store your backups in a totally different building. Buying another external for $150 as backup and keeping it in your safe deposit box is a lot better than losing thousands of dollars worth of content, or worse, priceless irreplaceable content (photos, original music recordings etc.)

  • wpgsweet

    I won’t give up hope……..
If Demonoid does not come back this time, then I wish the other torrent sites would adopt very similar search critieria……..
I loved being able to search through ebooks in differen’t categories, whether it be science fiction, or paranomal. You didn’t even have to type anything in, and it would just pull up all the recent added torrents in that category. You didn’t need to know what you were looking for! The newest torrents were always up within hours, and it wasn’t difficult to find them. You didn’t have to worry about virus’s either! You could see other users comments on the file on whether it was good or not……
It became more of a family, and you recognized users and who had decent uploads.

I wish I could do this on DragonTorrentz :( You can only search ebooks, not anything more specific. I am still grateful though, for all of their hard work. It isn’t easy, and I appreciate it. :D

For those that use the 1 download = 1 lost sale……. I’m sure that may be the case SOMETIMES. For me though, the things I really wanted I bought, I would never and will never go out and buy all that other stuff. I will just have to find something else to do.
I’m not sure if the entertainment industry understands this.
You aren’t losing revenue, because I never would have bought it in the first place. So dry your tears with your billions, while I go home to my cancer diagnosing low-middle class income.  Yah like that makes sence, I save god damn lives yet I get paid around 50 grand a year (before tax and professional fees).  So many things wrong with our society, where do I even start.

    Long Live the Demon!

  • yeah me

dude stop already with articles about demonoid who da f–k cares there are plenty of better places

  • xpmule

You guys know that you have always been able to get Demonoid torrents from places like Bitsnoop right ?
Just add the search to your Browser search box type in a keyword and click download. how much simpler can it be ?
And to prove my point i search for something i upoaded to Demonoid and i see it on Bitsnoop and it has the magnet link and the torrent file including multiple trackers.
And its ALWAYS been this way !
Even if you think your upload is new to demonoid it always gets indexed bythe world and people also take and spread the files and upload them to TPB too
So i don;t see how people are claiming that Demonoid had all this unique stuff.
    That’s bullshit !
And i know because i had been registered there for many years and uploaded torrents to Demonoid too. AND i actually look around the net.. my world has never revolved around demonoid. some people need to get out more lol

  • Sanity_Vocal

There are some sites around like Itorrents and Kickass. Etc, where I can still find copies of my fav ebooks available. They are not as good as Demonoid, but they suffice.

  • Torrent Liberator

     Torrentfreak,

I’m glad you posted this article because Demonoid has been on my mind lately.

I have been testing the torrent ecosystem with various searches and I am shocked at the significantly reduced diversity of torrents and fewer seeds overall.

Demonoid’s closure has had a noticeable effect. Sure, there are still many torrents available and seeds, but it’s different now. I can see it. I can feel it ( it’s like a disturbance in the force :-)  ).Many of the comments you read in these articles reflect the loss and frustration people feel. It has honestly made me depressed.

What made Demonoid so great for us all was its “semi-private” nature which made torrents more accessible. I am concerned now that Demonoid users will upload their torrents to fully private sites, thus locking their torrents away from the majority of users. I am no fan of “torrent elitism”. I think torrents should be available to all, not just a few. After experiencing several fully private sites, I have to say, I don’t really like the concept. It’s as if the torrents are enslaved.

    FREE ALL TORRENTS FOR ALL!

Demonoid uploaders, please consider uploading to public sites, so all can enjoy and find things via DHT searches should sites go down.

I’m willing to contribute to get the site back up and running without the net seems boring Demonoid is my fav site i mostly got tutorials and e books, a few comics here and there and some movies I for one will wait till it’s back online I check every other day

  • DonGateley

What made Demonoid unique was its fantastic classification and search scheme.  I think it was its UI that was largely responsible for the richness and the excellence of its contents.  Why were they so unique?  Demonoid, of course, represented a lot of fine work and set the bar high but why was that bar never even approached by anyone else?

Should they fail to find a friendly host in for example Argentina, Brazil or Ecuador or in any event I hope they consider releasing the package as open source (or even proprietary) that anyone anywhere can download, install and maintain.  There are lots of precedents in the domain of forums, both open and proprietary, such as phpBBB, Discus, BulletinBoards, etc.  Why not a generic Demonoid which could proliferate unchecked?

It could be a game changer.

    • guest-one

Argentina? I live in Argentina and I don’t think things would be easier here, unfortunately sites of this kind will be shut down soon, it has happened before. Not an alternative, I think Brazil has a similar policy.

      • DonGateley

Cuba, then..  :-)  Unless their bandwidth is embargoed too.  How about Islamic countries?  I doubt they think much of Western IP.

      • Liz

Brazil just about has no piracy policy!

We have a HUGE site of fan made subtitles for pirated tv shows, for example. They have tried to shut them down, and have gotten nowhere. We have a very liberal anti-piracy thing going on here.

The UK torrent site UKNOVA has pulled all of their torrents after getting a C&D notice from FACT.  Absolutely the best site on the net for UK television (don’t talk to me about those wankers over at The Box; it’s run by elitist bastards who seem to want to find ways to kick & ban users).  If Demonoid DOES return, I hope they would help out & assist UKN getting back online.  Until then, I guess I use the hit & miss solution of digging through the search function of every torrent site I’ve bookmarked.

  • Jake

Its dead, sad to say but its gone forever, I think its only a matter of time before they rewrite the internet completely so file sharing will become extremely difficult, I hope I’m wrong but it seems torrent sharing may be reaching its life span

The thing I don’t like about a site like Demonoid, is you had to register to use it.  You had to give them information about yourself. And then they track your activity, and give it over to courts when pressured.

    xpmule, you’re just plain wrong.

I have already come across 50+ torrents that were only available on demonoid and none of the public trackers. When you google search, the demonoid results still come up. Sure, a lot of it spread to other sites but if you think that everything on demonoid was made available somewhere else then your thinking is just wrong.

Yeah! I would actually hold my nose and use a Paypal site to see Demonoid reappear – and I despise Paypal and eBay to the point that I won’t use either of them as a vendor or as a buyer. Of course, I would be happier to use a less criminally oriented payment facilitator.

  • Bittersweetened

Say what you want about Demonoid but it had not only a great multitude
of torrents with many wonderfully rare and obscure subjects but also had
an active, well knit community who worked hard on keeping their
torrents available to users and often responded to feedback. Other
torrents sites I’ve visited simply can’t boast that kind of passion from
    their users.

I know many use torrents to find latest films,
etc, but for me, Demonoid and the community it had built were memory
keepers, for it’s there so much that I thought was lost to time and unable to
find anywhere was found there amongst it’s users. Old rare films, tv
movies, tv shows that were only a few episodes long, foreign films,
books long out of print.. the list goes on. I’m grateful for it all.
Thanks to those who shared and I truly hope the demon returns to us
    again.

  • Karan

They should set up the site in India! There are hardly any anti-piracy rules here!

    • Zebra52

India may not have and anti-piracy rules now, but you can bet the U.S. would put major preassure on India to shut down any torrent site hosted in India.

      • http://www.archivale.com/weblog Piolenc

Pressure or no pressure, India is a big country and its politicians take pride in being “nonaligned,” i.e. not taking any shit from America or Europe…though they do sometimes have to knuckle under to the Chinese, sadly enough.

  • robthom

They should probably go full private next time.

They dont need the free newest torrent exposure anymore since they are now legendary.

They might also want to consider restraining from hosting the newest pop releases like audience cams and the new lil jon album and stuff.

Those are the kinds of things that the mpaa likes to bitch about the most.

Stick to the quality and rare stuff that earned them their respected reputation.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_666CXNEZ6KWZNLK3L4GHGHJ2UE the poodah

There’s no way they are coming back. Considering the staff hauled ass, the seizures and arrests, the domain pawned off and de-listed from google as well, you can kiss them goodbye. Was a nice run, but was only a matter of time. With the criminal investigation going they are basically going to do all they can to bury them. Best just look elsewhere..still have good ole Piratebay, and they pretty much most of the stuff demonoid had going.

    • http://www.archivale.com/weblog Piolenc

I use Piratebay, but it was a distant second to Demonoid. The Demon excluded porn, which eliminated a lot of dross from the listings and discouraged less-than-desirable users. They filtered both their content and their users, which boosted quality sky-high. The one and only torrent I ever put together was put together because of encouragement and detailed instructions from the big D.

I liked Demonoid for the ‘out of print’ books,

Maybe Mexico should focus on drug cartels decapitating people in the streets, rather than teenagers downloading songs.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/LJZG5Z6FJKCO5EA6SVRZNCHS2Y Carl Smith

Yea, definitely.  I live in Mexico and the whole thing about the “law” here is fake.  Market selling pirated movies are raided every now and then to make it look like there’s a “crack-down”.  Corrupt cops, even traffic police ( I had to pay one $20 this week to stop him taking my license for “speeding”), the law sometimes seems made up as it goes.  Depends who you know and how much you pay.   The Demonoid thing is a set-up to pacify the US.  Only. There’s no other reason.
Meanwhile, drugs get shipped, CD’s, movies all continue to be pirated and sold, you can go to any little market on a Sunday and openly by these, – clothes, shoes, jewelry, handbags – all pirated and available.
Here the police are corrupt, the law is corrupt and the politicians are super corrupt.  There’s no real such thing as Mexican “authorities”, only those politicians and govt. authorities with enough power and enough clout and reasons to follow through on “prosecutions”.  Here, it’s obvious, they are trying to pacify the US.  No copyright infringement has ever been as strictly adhered to as what’s happening to the Demonoid Admins.

      • http://www.archivale.com/weblog Piolenc

Sounds like the Philippines, where I live. Periodic crackdowns performed after the police and others quietly notify prospective targets. Amazing the number of cyber-cafés shut down “for maintenance” at just the time of the raids… I like it here.

  • Gnaneshwar Rao

Demonoid site when will be back. we are waiting for u

  • Kashif

    Missing u demonoid :(

  • OlDad55

I would bet the Mexicans are motivated by far more than ‘anti-piracy’ issues…. Probably one of the drug cartels butchering their own people by the thousands was losing money and pressured the fake govt there to start a crackdown. Kind of like the Mafia here in the U.S. pressures the politicians  they own to keep Pot illegal because it would cost them BILLIONS in lost drug trade! They are fooling no-one.

  • OlDad55

Love Demonoid, always have, always will. As long as there is file-sharing, they will find a way to return.. GO DEMONOID!!

  • Joachim Debarge

The Ukrainian government had raided ColoCALL, the server that had formerly hosted Demonoid, and forced the site from the web.According to CNET,  director of anti-piracy for the IFPI Jeremy Banks said:  ”The operation to close Demonoid was a great example of INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION to tackle a service that was facilitating the illegal distribution of music on a vast scale.”            Big Brother wins….

    Ex Demonoid Users:

Demonoid was truly special in many ways for many people, but I’m now moving on to another site.
So far, I found Torrentzilla and the signup was easy. I was really surprised by the great selection available. They have a number of free ratio torrents that are a great way to get started pain-free and build up the ratio to get other things. Real nice selection of old tv shows I’ve been looking for. The search options are pretty advanced too and way better than TPB.  Check them out.

  • Shaniko

  • Dingle Berry

“This time the situation is different though, as the Mexican authorities are determined to keep the site offline.”

    “Mexican authorities”. Really?

  • Stonker

Call me crazy but wouldn’t a good way of not being dragged under as a torrent site is to avoid hosting stuff that’s relatively new. I’m sure the RIAA etc don’t really care about out of print comic books, 90s and earlier TV shows, foreign or old movies, out of print RPGs. etc etc.

I’m not saying Demonoid should have been that site but most of what I went there for was for stuff that you can only buy 2nd hand via Ebay these days. If being able to get that meant not being able to get the latest Batman movie or even the latest DVD / CD releases that would have been fine with me.

I do realise that there’s stuff (unfairly) unavailable to certain countries etc or retardedly DRMed in different ways. But dealing in stuff that definitely does cut into the current profits of the music/movie fat cats it’s obvious they are going to keep targeting it.

  • sharp

The most amazing things about Demonoid were (are) its community and its rules. Torrents were not simply thrown in for ratio increase. Most of them were presented in elegant manner, with commentaries, photos and links. Downloaders could say thanks and comment what they got. And there was a separate forum for requests, ideas, interchange and interest groups. The rules were model-like – no pornography whatsoever, no spam, no viruses, no racism, no hate. Most of the content had high educational value – literature, philosophy, history, painting, classical music, jazz etc. With all kinds of rare, obscure and out-of-print stuff that you couldn’t buy anywhere, even if you were willing to spend the money. I sincerely cannot understand why authorities insist on raiding and destroying such initiatives. On the contrary – governments of many countries around the world should promote and protect Demonoid as a precious complement to the educational system.
