Demonoid’s ISP to Appeal Against BREIN

Written by Enigmax & Ernesto on June 29, 2007

Following on from reports this week that the Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN had moved to take the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker offline, its host Leaseweb, is set to appeal last week’s decision to force it to reveal the customer’s details of the smaller BitTorrent site everlasting.nu.

Last week, the Dutch ISP Leaseweb was forced to take down the everlasting.nu BitTorrent tracker after the Amsterdam court decided that it facilitated copyright infringement.

As reported, the outcome of the lawsuit initiated by the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN could spell trouble for some of the key players in the BitTorrent landscape. Concerned about this decision, administrators at other trackers hosted at Leaseweb started looking for alternative hosts.

In an attempt to re-assure its customers, Leaseweb is set to appeal against the original court decision regarding everlasting.nu. They argue that the decision is an unacceptable restriction on freedom of expression on the Internet.

In addition Leaseweb stressed that they have nothing to do with the downtime issues Demonoid experienced this week. “Leaseweb had no contact with the owner of Demonoid this week”, Leaseweb’s lawyer noted.

The lawyers office further states that they demand that BREIN is more documented and thorough in their requests to take down BitTorrent sites. “If the ruling in the everlasing.nu case holds up, freedom of expression on the Internet would be a joke”, the lawyers said.

Tim Kuik, managing director of BREIN says Leaseweb doesn’t stand a chance because their previous request was well grounded, and everlasting.nu unmistakably engaged in unlawful behavior. Kuik further explained that illegally offering files has nothing to do with privacy and freedom of expression, as Leaseweb suggested.

I have a bookmark folder thats bursting with loadsa torrent sites, loads of public and I am a member of nearly all the good private sites, but I still find myself using demonoid more than any other simply for the variety the offer. The speeds might not be the best but they are far from the worst and the different file catogories they have more than make up for this

Now I need to find a completely new private server. Gah and now I won’t have ANY invites to use to trade with. Need to get a screen of my ratio before demonoid goes down…

I came from Elite to Demonoid as i think most people did.

So what is the alternative if they don’t get thisback online?

What sites do you recommend?

Cheers

Demonoid was one of the best trackers especially for classical music. It would be bad if it got shut down permanently. Wonder why they have not targeted mininova and the other big players…

It seems to me that all torrents will die.. -(( And many users will be sucking a cock for a coke

If DM gets shut down I’m not sure what I’ll do. I’ve relied on DM for years for all those things you can never find elsewhere, be it comics, apps, films or music.

Has anyone here also noticed that oink.me.uk is also down? They are, to my knowledge, also hosted at leaseweb.
Demonoid ok.. but dammit, not oink!!!

Wonder same. Demonoid notice still dated June 27 but and still says ‘up tomorrow’. They must be having a lot of trouble restoring. Wish they had RAID! So were until they are back? http://www.mininova.org/ or http://torrentspy.com? See you back at demonoid when it is back.

Yah oink and demonoid are both down. This is huge trouble. I’m going to lay low for a while for things to get better. Back to buying my stuff for a few weeks. Also, sites such as BM torrents and torrentleech could also fall, they’re are hosted on sister companies that are linked to leaseweb.

Because demonoid is a tracker,
mininova is just a indexing-site ..
and they are also getting the heat !

OiNK is an alright site but the administration sucks, next to impossible to keep a good upload ratio, But the quality in releases are half decent. either way, their are plenty of other quality sites still around.

HERE IS A FIX FOR OINK if you use mac
__________________________________
Temporary fix for Mac OS X, it requires some work in the Terminal. You need the admin password for your system for this. Make sure to enter all commands in bold correctly with the proper spaces and capitalization.

1. Open “Terminal” from your Applications / Utilities directory.

2. Type cd /private/etc and hit enter.

3. Time to edit the hosts file, we will use VIM for it, which is a text editor for the console. You also need root privileges to edit the file because it is read only for normal users.
Type sudo vim hosts and hit enter. You will be asked for your admin password, enter it and hit enter, then VIM pops up.

4. You will see the content of the hosts file, first few lines are comments with # in the front, then 3 entries, do NOT touch these. Navigate to the last line with your cursor keys and then to the right till the cursor is behind the localhost entry

5. Now you need VIM to go into edit mode, do this by hitting i

6. VIM is in insert mode now, hit enter for a new line and type
85.17.40.69 tracker.oink.me.uk

If you want you can add the following lines too, in case you encounter trouble with IRC or the website. Hit enter after each line for a new one
85.17.40.71 oink.me.uk
85.17.40.70 irc.oink.me.uk

7. Time to leave edit mode now, do so by hitting the escape key.

8. Back in viewing mode, now you need to save the file. You can do this by typing :w and hitting enter, VIM will tell you something like “hosts (number of lines) written”.

9. Now you need to exit VIM. Type :q and hit enter, you will be back at the terminal.

10. Almost done, now you need to tell the OS to use the content of the new hosts file.
Type sudo niload -v -m hosts .

OINKS FOR WINDOWS
_______________
If you are running windows, there is a easy way to fix it, for now,
go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc, there is a file there called hosts, open it in notepad, then add:
85.17.40.71 oink.me.uk
85.17.40.69 tracker.oink.me.uk
85.17.40.70 irc.oink.me.uk

25 Jul 01, 2007 at 02:16 by Steve

oink is actually up. They are having DNS issues.

edit your hosts file and add this.

85.17.40.69 tracker.oink.me.uk
85.17.40.70 irc.oink.me.uk
85.17.40.71 oink.me.uk
