Well, first of all, the post was a bit of fun. Secondly, of course – one of the good things IS the free publicity but where NIN embraced file-sharers and actually acknowledged the benefits in public, BuckCherry chose to take the benefits but still complain about file-sharing.

That’s the difference :)

Note that I still wrote the article, and they STILL got their free publicity so i’m not coming down too hard on them ;)

They know that many people will spread the news and download leaked material. Therefore they spread the news themselves and “leak” the material themselves.

It’s not hard to figure out. If only a single track of a new album “leaks”, then it was almost certainly an “authorized leak” put there by the label itself.

But if the entire album gets on P2P before it’s even in the shops, then that’s real piracy, and the police will be called to investigate.

P2P saboteur MediaDefender gets paid huge sums of money to “leak” certain non-fake tracks onto the P2P networks, and these paid-for “leaks” are a rapidly growing part of their business, as fewer and fewer of the major labels are still paying them to distribute fake files on P2P.

Me is confused if I do believe in the honesty of musicians and dismiss the allegation that this is just a PR action.
