Donate?

Through year and day donating is intertwined with the torrent community. Torrent sites tend to consume a lot of bandwidth, and bandwdith costs money so someone has to pay. But should we donate? and to which site?

What are the do’s and dont’s of donating? I generally apply some rules before donating to make sure the money reaches the right people.

do!
Donate to sites you use frequently. Very simple, if you use it, the site must be good and worthwhile donating to. I personally prefer to donate to sites that bring something new, sites that are innovative and user friendly

dont 1
Never donate to new sites or sites that force you to donate. Every now and then new sites appear that beg for donations even though they have only a couple of torrents listed. These sites either do not know how to run a proper torrent site or they’re just want to make some extra money by installing a simple torrent tracker. Hosting a torrent site is a hobby, it will cost money. A torrent site can never live of donations and needs a webmaster who dedicates time and money to get things up and running.

dont 2
Never donate to sites in order to get access or privileges. Sharing has to be free, in general everything should be available to everyone. Paying for privileges undermines the “true spirit” of sharing and is never a good thing. So never pay to get access to some kind of private section. Some sites offer to remove ads for donating users, that’s ok in my opinion, but when the amount of torrents you can get depends on the money you donate you’d better leave.

dont 3
Never donate to sites that use excessive advertising and/or pop-ups. Ads are a nice way to make some money for most torrent sites, but i really like to see some torrents within these ads. But in general the the sites that use excessive advertising conflict with the do part.

Let’s donate
So do you have a great site that I should donate to? I have 25$ here waiting to be donated, just put your favorite site in the comments.
