Through year and day donating is intertwined with the torrent community. Torrent sites tend to consume a lot of bandwidth, and bandwdith costs money so someone has to pay. But should we donate? and to which site?

What are the do’s and dont’s of donating? I generally apply some rules before donating to make sure the money reaches the right people.

do!
Donate to sites you use frequently. Very simple, if you use it, the site must be good and worthwhile donating to. I personally prefer to donate to sites that bring something new, sites that are innovative and user friendly

dont 1
Never donate to new sites or sites that force you to donate. Every now and then new sites appear that beg for donations even though they have only a couple of torrents listed. These sites either do not know how to run a proper torrent site or they’re just want to make some extra money by installing a simple torrent tracker. Hosting a torrent site is a hobby, it will cost money. A torrent site can never live of donations and needs a webmaster who dedicates time and money to get things up and running.

dont 2
Never donate to sites in order to get access or privileges. Sharing has to be free, in general everything should be available to everyone. Paying for privileges undermines the “true spirit” of sharing and is never a good thing. So never pay to get access to some kind of private section. Some sites offer to remove ads for donating users, that’s ok in my opinion, but when the amount of torrents you can get depends on the money you donate you’d better leave.

dont 3
Never donate to sites that use excessive advertising and/or pop-ups. Ads are a nice way to make some money for most torrent sites, but i really like to see some torrents within these ads. But in general the the sites that use excessive advertising conflict with the do part.

Let’s donate
So do you have a great site that I should donate to? I have 25$ here waiting to be donated, just put your favorite site in the comments.

p2ptorrents should acutally get the money you want to donate becuase the site admin (reddog is his name on site) really is putting in an effort to make the site better.

I just donated the 25$ to demonoid. Great site, and the largest tracker out there

I dont donate to anyone. Everytime I use the page, or the popups come around, they get money from my surfing. Probably a few cents a day. That is plenty.

No, I think the Piratebay should get the money. Piratebay is the most awesome torrent site on the entire net. Give the $25 to Piratebay ^_^

Well done for donating to demonoid, but bitsoup deserves a mention.Although you do sort of pay for privileges,ie:your able to d/load new torrents straight away(as apposed to waiting 24hrs)and you can access the vip forum, which is something of an anti-climax!But you recieve a pre set amount of upload credit according to amount donated,in my case 80GB,$15 well spent in my opinion,a great site and a pleasant and helpful community.

I have a dream, that one day, no website will request money or put ads on their pages.

What about free internet services ?
I publish information and free programs (GPL’ed) on my website, don’t ask for money and don’t event put adds or anoying ‘popups’.

Let’s encourage everybody to do so !

don’t like it.

No seed info & forum isn’t working.
Seed/Peer ratio is the most important thing there is.

Hi,

I made some new adjustments… You probably were using Firefox… The forum was indeed unavailable for FireFox users but I fixed that! And seed/peer info is really hard in HTML… I don’t know must about PHP yet, but maybe in the future I will!

You want to see a site that has more original and user friendly features than nearly all the other trackers combined, then check out torrential.kicks-ass.org and see what a private tracker can be like.

Ratio Casino, Shoutbox, PopShout, MiniShout, CatLinx, Incredibly fast and easy navigation and feature access. Download a torrent and thank th uploader in one click. Leave a comment for the uploader without even browsing the torrent details. Dual tracker that serves public and private simultaneously. New features and site improvements on a nearly daily basis. If you want to donate to someone that will earn it, Torrential is the only way to go.

Check them out sometime.
