Dotcom Announces Brand New “Lobbyist-Proof” Kiwi Domain for Mega

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has confirmed that the new domain for his fresh Mega project will be New Zealand-based. Next January it will launch on Mega.co.nz, a domain that Dotcom believes will enjoy great protection. “Prime Minister John Key can have as many dinners with Hollywood executives and copyright lobbyists as he likes,” he informs TorrentFreak. “The simple fact is that the NZ government, which has been acting like a subsidiary of the US government, is not above the law.”

On November 1st, Kim Dotcom revealed the URL for his new venture. The new Mega file-hosting service would use Me.ga, a domain operated out of the African country, Gabon.

Obviously the domain itself, Me.ga, is extremely memorable and the fact that it would operate outside the United States was also a bonus. But quickly things started to go wrong. The Gabon government said they would seize the domain but not before a shadowy group called Ome.ga appeared to take control.

But moving forward with characteristic determination, today Dotcom announced that Mega will now rely on a domain controlled by a country he not only loves, but now calls home. On January 20, 2013, Mega will launch on Mega.co.nz.

Picking a Kiwi domain makes perfect sense and is something we discussed here internally last week. Dotcom’s popularity is riding high in New Zealand and as the entrepreneur informed us this morning, he has complete confidence in the legal system there.

“The judiciary in New Zealand works. Judges are independent and not influenced by politics. That has been our experience so far,” Dotcom told TorrentFreak.

mega

The Megaupload founder believes the issues are simple to understand. The new Mega will operate completely legally and therefore the service will be protected under New Zealand law. Lobbyists, he says, can’t do anything about that.

“Prime Minister John Key can have as many dinners with Hollywood executives and copyright lobbyists as he likes. The simple fact is that the NZ government, which has been acting like a subsidiary of the US government, is not above the law,” he explains.

However, while Dotcom predicts reasonable behavior in New Zealand, the same cannot be said about the authorities in the former home of many of Megaupload’s servers.

“The US DOJ has shown total disregard for the laws that were created to protect Megaupload and its users. Our case demonstrates how little respect the US government has for its own laws and due process,” he notes.

Dotcom admits that things can be done, legislatively, to make life difficult for file-hosting services in New Zealand, but that would not only have a chilling effect on innovation, but could also spell good news for the opposition.

“The New Zealand government can try to draft new legislation to ban services like Mega but that would be the end of cloud storage and online service providers in New Zealand and probably also the end of the current government,” Dotcom explains.

“One thing is certain, the new Mega will become a commercial success. It will allow us to fund the best legal defense team money can buy and launch our offensive in all those countries that the US dragged into this nonsense. We will make the DOJ attorneys work day and night while our users can enjoy a truly innovative and ground breaking new Mega.”

Yeah I like mega.co.nz too, and although I wish this new enterprise of Kim’s all the best of success and hopefully trouble-free from the so-called law-enforcement agencies, I’m still uncomfortable with these types of services.

Storing our files in the cloud is very risky as we quickly found out with the USA’s unlawful seizure of Megaupload. So I guess I’d be happier investing in some TeraByte external hard drives so that I know I’m fully in control of my own info and can share it via torrent or wherever any time I like.

There’s just summat about these cloud services that gimme the heebyjeebies. Maybe I’m just a control freak huh?

I know the feeling, I also prefer to run my own cloud from home, where I have physical access to my files

          “USA’s unlawful seizure of Megaupload…”

Cut the US off from the web, it’s much more peaceful and less risky in a legal sense.

Don’t file-share with the US or use any of their privacy breaking social media services. Install peer-block, load up the American IPs and profit.

        • http://profiles.google.com/zerianis10 Christopher Kidwell

Yes, you are just a control freak, to be blunt. It’s MORE likely for you to lose data from your hard drives crashing at home than losing data via the shutdown of a filehost.

        • Wall

If I could, I would love to make a project like that with my HDDs,
where people could be able to upload specific files (the best ones),
just as some BT trackers do, with the difference
it would be “direct download”, not torrents.

BTW, I want to say that I would have liked that Me.ga domain
with this mega.co.nz, I don’t like that “co” part
mega.nz would be better, anyway, that’s not a big deal for me.
I just wanted to say it.

well, let’s hope that this one lasts a bit longer than the last one! let’s also hope that the NZ judicial system not only continues to work, but remains uninfluenced by any government, including it’s own. people seem to forget that a court is supposed to a purporter of justice, not a political extension that changes the way it rules depending on which party is in power at the time, or which industry throws the most money at the judges. i bet, however, that there will be some serious threatening and bribing carried out by the US to get this stopped! they will be even more determined to get him extradited to face bull shit, trumped up charges and to prevent him from gaining access to the monies that the DoJ have stolen!

    • Guest

I wonder if someone will have a word with the Judge in the New Zealand Appeal Court who is currently mulling over the decision on whether or not to uphold the previous courts decision that the US must give fuller disclosure of evidence of its case against Megaupload before the extradition hearing or whether to over the previous courts decision and to rule that the US does not have to give full disclosure of evidence. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if someone now tries to put heavy pressure on the Judge to overturn the ruling and now rule that the US does not have to give fuller disclosure of evidence before the extradition hearing. Should the Judge decide in favour of the previous courts ruling and state that the US must give fuller of disclosure of evidence then I wouldn’t be too surprised if the US will come out with utter bull shit in order to get of not to comply with the appeal court ruling should it rule that they must give fuller disclosure of evidence and that they will do everything possible to get out of it and will no doubt will try and have the extradition hearing extended for say another 6 months for the extradition hearing to be heard in September 2013 because they need all this time to provide the evidence. If the US do try and extend the extradition hearing to later on in the year then it just show that they are just stalling for time in order to deplete Dotcom of funds to defend himself because they do not have any/required necessary evidence to convict Dotcom in a court of law.

      • Colin Carr

Of course, if Mega.co.nz is a commercial success, dragging out the extradition process could backfire on the FSA* as KDC starts to amass new funds to fight his corner in court.
On the other hand, the NZ appeal court might rule at the next hearing that if the FSA does not not give full disclosure at once, the extradition request fails for lack of supporting evidence.

    • Violated0

Other countries based on Western democracies (I use that term lightly) tend to respect the law and freedom of speech a lot more than other countries do. So this new mega.co.nz domain would have to do something unlawful first before they even begin to want to censor it where even then it would be an uphill fight.

I would expect he would have also been safe on most EU domains.

    • Ole Juul

As stated in the article, he is clear on the fact that NZ is in bed with Hollywood, but has confidence in the legal system there. This is partly because the courts recently stood up to the prime minister and did what they were supposed to do. I know, this is not the way we do it over here. :)

      > “That description is valid for Sweden..”

Then how come one of the most high-profile trials in Sweden in ages manages to turn out to be by definition unconstitutional, with every single judge involved being, according to both the Swedish and European constitution, biased?

I’ve noticed that you are desperately afraid of commenting on the fact that the judges were, according to the Swedish and European constitution, biased?

But maybe people who openly applaud fascism don’t care about human rights and fair trials?

I guess the most important thing for you is to try to come up with excuses for why you can’t answer questions that you really don’t have any answer to..

    • Guest

“let’s hope that it’s valid for New Zealand also. In that case Dotcom will be in trouble again.”

No Kim Dotcom will not be in trouble as the New Zealand law has so far been very valid in his case. They have already ruled that the warrants, seizures etc. have been illegal but no doubt you will state that the New Zealand law is corrupt.

      • http://nejtillpirater.wordpress.com/ Nejtillpirater

Both Sweden and New Zealand is among the least corrupt countries in the world.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index

Ecuador – the country that Assange prefers over Sweden now – is on the bottom half of the list.

        • Anyone

what a meaningless statistic if you see how Sweden behaves with TPB and Assange

“what a meaningless statistic if you see how Sweden behaves with TPB and Assange”

Right, don’t look at the statistics if you’ll find a conspiracy theory to believe in.

Somalia, the most corrupt country in the list according to the link I gave, is REALLY the least corrupt since the complete list is another conspiracy etc…

          @Nejtillpirater

There are 3 kinds of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics.

Btw, it’s called the corruption perception. Perception here being a key word. Not every corrupt country is waving an AK.

        • Roll

If a system is corrupt, your chances to find corruption
in that part will be a little complicated.

        • BJonesTF

No-one has said Ecuador is perfect. Nor are you saying that SWeden or NZ is perfect. I note that.

However, these lists are for broad generalities. The average traveling speed of all vehicles in a country might be 60mph (100kph) once you incude high speed trains, and aircraft etc. Now do that average speed on a residential street or outside a school. See how you get treated.
You have to distibguish between the generalisation, and the specific.
Overall, I’m sure htey’re great. In the specific cases we’re dealing with, we’re seeing a lot of corruption and corrupt practices. The prevalence of kickbacks for speeding tickets, or whatever is of no relevance at all.

    • Dan

Yes, but the judiciary doesn’t come into play until AFTER homes and businesses get raided, etc. Then it’s too late. Hollywood banks on that fact.

      • http://nejtillpirater.wordpress.com/ Nejtillpirater

It sometimes happens that nothing is found after a raid. But normally this is not the case, like in the raid against PRQ/Pirate Bay.

Four people were sentenced to jail so in this case it was very motivated to perform the raid. If nothing had been found that was proof of illegal activity, the court decision to perform the raid would have been more questionable.

        • Anyone

they didn’t find anything in the TPB raid
or else they would have shown some form of evidence instead of just relying on corrupt judges and corrupt prosecutors

“they didn’t find anything in the TPB raid
or else they would have shown some form of evidence instead of just relying on corrupt judges and corrupt prosecutors”

According to the sentences, they found evidence enough. You can’t really have any doubts about what TPB is about, just click on a link and download for yourself… Is it against Swedish law? Yes and there have been a couple of more cases like that but not with the same media focus. Everyone in Sweden know by now that running a site like TPB is illegal – accessory to copyright infringement – and will make you go to jail. The person running Powerbits – another Swedish illegal bittorrent site – got one year in prison. Etc.

        • Anyone

I’m not that familiar with swedish law, I’ll admit that, but it can’t be so fucked up that the law actually says the owner’s of a site are responsible for what their users do
it’s all just politics interfering in the justice system to appease the US, similar with the trumped up charges against Assange

and I see you didn’t deny that the judge and prosecution were corrupt because they either worked for the MAFIAA or were part of a pro-copyright group

Sweden’s justice system seems to be rotten to the core, how you can defend such blatant injustice is beyond me

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessory_(legal_term)

        • Anyone

so filesharing is a crime in Sweden?
          it isn’t in most countries
and you can’t be an accessory if there is no crime

similarly, why isn’t the postal office an accessory to bombing when they are send in the mail?
or why wasn’t United Airlines sued for 9/11?
why can Glock still produce guns despite thousands of people getting killed with them?

just because you provide a tool does not mean you are responsible for the actions of others that use that tool

any sane judge in a somewhat fair trial will see that, look for example at the YouTube case

        • http://nejtillpirater.wordpress.com/ Nejtillpirater

          @Anyone

“so filesharing is a crime in Sweden?
          it isn’t in most countries”

Not file sharing in general terms, only files sharing of copyrighted stuff, like in most countries in the world.

“and you can’t be an accessory if there is no crime”

“similarly, why isn’t the postal office an accessory to bombing when they are send in the mail?”

Since they’re aware of the bomb being sent and has rules against such acts. TPB have in essence no rules and are perfectly aware of what’s going on since they’re earning a lot of money from it.

“or why wasn’t United Airlines sued for 9/11?”

Same, they didn’t know about it and wasn’t able to stop it.

“why can Glock still produce guns despite thousands of people getting killed with them?”"

This can be questioned if you’re against guns in general. But Glock does not urge the buyers to kill pepole.

“just because you provide a tool does not mean you are responsible for the actions of others that use that tool”

Correct. A bittorrent site can be perfectly legal, when having rules against illegal file sharing and system/moderation that actually works.

“any sane judge in a somewhat fair trial will see that, look for example at the YouTube case”

YouTube has a system for moderation that makes it legal, otherwise they would have been in court many times by now.

        • Anyone

again, why should the site be required to moderate its users?
not even the aweful DMCA requires that, and Sweden has no similar law

Of course I make up new names all the time sometime registered and sometime not.

Also I vote for myself sometime trying to make the world believe that a lot of people support the entertainment industry. I know for a fact that this is not the case.

One example that will open your eyes:

As “Someone” I voted 9 times for myself under the November 10 article:

“Pirate Bay Founder Arrested Again On Suspicion Of New Hacking & Fraud Offenses”

Do you really believe that 9 people on TF will really agree with a garbage post such as this posted below?

“I hope they keep that piece of sh*t locked up. . . ”

Also I voted 4 time for myself as “IHaveNoBalls” under the same article.

I am sorry I did all of these. To redeem myself I am moving on your side guys. And also I will spread all the industry dirty secrets I know on the net with the proof when I can get it. You have no idea how evil are these entertainment people! I can also tell you that a lot of frightening crap is curently going on within the Swedish governement and it is urgent for the Swedish citizen to react.

Really if you consider the facts, Kim Dotcom himself is NOT guilty of NO CRIME, It was his userbase who uploaded the copyrighted crap, and the US fuckers go after the easy target, Kim, because they know by shutting the whole site down, they have in effect won.

I personally would never store ANY Data online, for various reasons:
    1) There is a chance what happened to Megaupload, could happen again – then you lose access to your vital data.
    2) Online World is not safe, Hackers could easily hack into your account and download/erase your data
    3) Store your Data at Home, then you have 200% Control over it, You can decide how to access it, You can use Sub-Standard Ports, Give it a hard to guess password, and other security measures, Plus your own data will not be stolen by the US Government like they Stole Megauploads Data.

If you are currently using a Cloud, my advice would be to move the data to HOME, and close down your accounts, Having Data online is very dodgy to say the least.

    Ask yourself 2 Questions:
    1) Would you trust me to hold your data? – I bet you’d say NO, and say that I’m a Stranger.
    2) Why do you trust The Cloud to hold your data? – They are a Stranger to you as well, You have not met them, Yet you trust all your data to them?!

I think I’ve made my point.

“I would never store ANY Data online”

You already do. Use browser based emails? Data. Have any account any where? Data. Brought anything online? Data. Use any banking service at all?? Data. You’re already here and you can’t leave ;)

“Store your Data at Home, then you have 200% Control over it,”

Storage itself itself isn’t a control issue. It’s an access issue. That’s why people and businesses use cloud storage in the first place.

No one is going to argue that the US take down wasn’t stupid but they’re already under pressure from US citizens who want their data back. Give it time and we’ll see what happens there

“Would you trust me to hold your data? – I bet you’d say NO, and say that I’m a Stranger.

Why do you trust The Cloud to hold your data? – They are a Stranger to you as well, You have not met them, Yet you trust all your data to them?!”

“You” have no reputation, no business and therefore no way of guaranteeing access or security, nor would I be able to actually use the law to gain compensation for possible losses.

I don’t “know” my bank but I still use them. It’s out of necessity that people use online services more than anything but you bring up an interesting point. Why rely on 1 cloud service? Using 1 or 2 more makes it much harder to lose everything provided you update them.

Online back up if you have a lot of data makes sense. I have about 40-50 terabytes of stuff buying enough hard drives to back it all up would cost between $1500 to $2000 plus so backing up online for $7 to $10 a month is a good deal but the problem I have is reliability. I don’t to back up data then have them pick through it and delete files. I also want my back up solution to be on firm legal ground so the site is not take down al a megaupload. None of the hosters at this point appear to be very stable. I don’t want to spend time uploading data to hoster that is going to close shop and run at the first sign of trouble.

      • Rich

where can you back up 50 terabytes of stuff for $10 a month?

Why not Mega.nz why use the old domain for NZ?

    • Anyone

because companies in nz get a .co.nz address

  • Ryu4444

Why would Kim use a New Zealand domain name? The government officials in New Zealand aiding taking down MegaUpload.com

    • Anyone

same reason TPB still uses a .se domain, to send a message

    • Guest

That undemocratic act was a big mistake and I really don’t believe the government of New Zealand is that incompetent to do it a second time.

  • Rea0st

To play it really safe Kim should have gone with a .ir domain ;)

    • Guest

Yeah of course. Iran is well known for its world wide web friendly regulations.

      • Racomir

Is Iran well known for helping the USA and Hollywood? I don’t think so. Mega is supposed to be an ennemy of the USA, so Iran might like it.

        • Nope

          No, that’s a bad idea.
It would be the perfect reason, for USA, to finally invade Iran.
Didn’t notice their desperation in their attempt to do that?

Bookmarked and waiting for January 19 !

It is a good thing Kim dot com is not a citizen of Sweden or right now he would be accused of some trumped up rape or hacking charge. Gabon just showed how stupid they are, they just chased away a website that might be one of the biggest websites for traffic in the near future.

Rapidshare may not be target of the mafiaa and may make a lot of noise about trying to combat piracy but one thing is clear. All the hosters that have disabled public sharing have gone the way of the dinosaur. It is like this: I need 50 terabyes of storage so a company is going to have to spend well over $2000 to provide it to me. It would take 10 years at $50 a year just to pay for the hardware and that does not include any of the other costs. So any company that offers unlimited storage for $50 to $100 a year is not that viable. I have paid for premium accounts on many hosters that I never uploaded a single byte to. This is the only way they can remain in business. Without a large group of premium accounts that don’t use any storage they will not stay in business.

The only way any cloud services can stay in business is get a lot of premium customers that don’t really use the service otherwise they cannot afford to indefinitely afford to back up my 50 terabytes for $50 a year and that is why none of them are stable, especially those that offer back-up only.

    • LLWa

If they wouldn’t have got any benefit for that traffic, in the end,
they didn’t lose anything more than charging a monthly fee for the domain.

  • Justin

It’s all about trust in the end and even if kim dotcom does manage to pull it off the question is for how long??

I’ve been following a new cloud company that is due to launch anytime that’s really going to turn heads!

I hope they consider to block all incoming US traffic. This would be at least a very effective way to remaind all US citizens that their country isn’t the world police and they are allowd to “GTFO” this time.

    • hairfly

Your about a stupid fuck if you think regular citizens think the US is the world police. They dont like their government any more than you do.

      • Guest

“They dont like their government any more than you do.”

        That is a bad joke.

Why didn’t they vote for a third party then? They just had a chance to vote for something very different, but it looks like the majority of US citizens simply don’t care about their two-party “land of the not so free”.

        • http://profiles.google.com/zerianis10 Christopher Kidwell

Third parties are NOT viable in the real world. The Libertarian Party, the only true ‘third party’ in America right now, is a bunch of whackjobs who adhere to even MORE conservative bunkus than the Republicans.

No, the only choice right now is Democrat or Republican, with Democrat being the better choice at the moment.

        • Who said I have a name?

You’ve clearly never met a person from the US. I am a US Citizen and I hate our government.

Why not? Because the United States and New Zealand illegally seized servers?

      • Gmail

Fucker cant be trusted to host my files. I’ll back them up myself.

  • McCheezits

For some really weird reason, I knew that Kim Dotcom would use a domain name under the New Zealand TLD, even before he announced that he was.

Nice way to be patriotic to New Zealand, Dotcom!

Nejtillpirater’s opinions and arguments reminds me a lot Nazism. Essentially we think different, so we should be punished and preferably institutionalized until we realize “the truth”. But best would be if we all disappeared. We are “die piraten-problem” and should preferably be eradicated.

There is no doubt in our minds that you are someone running the lucrative music and movie industry’s errands for your own either economical or pure fetish motives. No matter how illogical or how much suffering it brings to less rich people, you obviously believe that restricting their right to share same information as the rest of the world is necessary. And that it justifies any behavior, lying, breaking laws, lobbying, bribing, spreading viruses, attacking senior citizens etc. You have taken the right to decide who has the right to inform themselves and share that information without a democratic election to choose you or the people you represent to do this. Just because you have the economic means to maintain your self informed you think of yourself as more worthy. It is pathetic and frightening!

Isn’t it great that Internet is free so even a nutcase like you can share your opinions with the rest of the universe? Even if we don’t like your opinions you don’t hear us saying that you should be punished or go to jail do you? No because we do believe in freedom. You believe in nothing.

  • Arjun

Don’t Be bitchy about it. Kim DotCom is working for internet freedom free access to everything torrents are really great (I love them!) but the only problem with it is it really on public “not-popular” torrents are not accessible but mega is service oriented website the will have access to file.

Long Live MEGA ill support you everytime.

    Love you kim

This merry-go-round is making me dizzy. All I have to say: the man is feeling SOO HAPPY about his previously-irrelevant name change. All this publicity has him feeling super cool; pleasuring himself while he whispers his own name over and over and over and over and over

  • Hogspace

I’d rather see Mega launch a completely distributed model using Openic domain names and with a system that make it impossible to know where data resides and the control sites mirrored in 100 places. Dotcom doesn’t actually seem to have much imagination or be very smart.
