Almost got me interested until the VPN part.. why don’t they just SSL enable their website if they are so concerned about privacy.. is the VPN part really even necessary then?

I think their biggest mistake is to make the ‘available torrent list’ visible and searchable.

This way they are nothing more than a warez site.

Users should add a torrent in private and see in private whether it is already available. That way at least it is a user initiated caching service.

Not that it matters much legal wise, probably.

Sounds pretty stupid to me! At least with true torrents you stand a chance of simply denying that you were involved, but if you blantently download a complete movie/album from this lot then it’s no different from someone turning up the old style warez websites and helping themselves to a complete, single copy of whatever they wanted! 100% pure proof you, and only you, downloaded illegal XYZ!

Yeah it fed through some russian proxy service… when i go to what is my IP it shows that I am from russia…prolly a scam. … and when did torrent freak start making their reviews advertisements… I remember when this was a stand up site.. I will probably delete TF from my favorites after this little debacle. I know you need to get paid, but don’t lie to me!

If the service works well and people like it, Why not Pay a little?
It takes money to operate a site so people really do need to give something to help keep it alive. Bittorrent should be free but without help there wont be any sites to get the free. It really is a no brainer….

I assume they’d respond to C&D takedown requests though I don’t suppose that’d pose a threat to subscribers as technically they wouldn’t be the ones hosting & distributing any infringing content. It’ll come down on the service which I gather would claim itself designed for legal purposes only, and whose job it isn’t to police the activities of its subscribers.

Authorities shouldn’t have cause to demand subscriber details as subscribers should be in the clear, and this is even assuming for a second that they could even identify individual user activities in the first place (unlikely i’d have thought without some serious government-grade snooping abilities).

I agree with @27 about the article’s not being an ad. We need to learn and test BitTorrent services.

On the other hand, holy crap! This is not a BitTorrent download service like Imageshack, not a seedbox either. This is pure and simple “We will take your money and kill you! And the best thing is you’re gonna love it!” Thank god for this article because if i heard this site from somewhere else and didn’t get the information, i would sign up. Tracker, search engine, file hoster, stealing files from other websites(Rapidshare)… Operating a file hosting service is not illegal in US or Germany (Rapidshare,imageshack etc.) but this website needs to go to Pluton to be legal.

Sounds just like the private usenet services that many folks already pay for, only with a wider scope that includes torrents. I like any concept put forth which involves some levels of protection and privacy, especially encryption. Is it too good to be true? Only time will tell.

This article doesn’t sound like an ad to me. It’s a novel idea and worth reporting. I can see Instant-Torrents and other services like it being very useful, especially for folks in certain countries that have over-zealous copyright laws and punishments disproportionate to the actual crime. That is of course if it’s not a honey-pot. If it is then forget about it.

well put. Doesn’t change my opinion of the fact that this torrent news site seems to post a lot of articles that i would classify as ‘paid reviews’ selling you a service.

you’d have to be mildly retarded to pay for that service in the first place, and secondly, not only does it offer NO protection, it’s mostly likely a honey pot.

Think about it, you pay this company to download illegal content, then log in and download it to your machine. That company, regardless of what they want to say in their disclaimer, is not only helping you pirate, it’s cashing in from it.

Beyond that, isps and sites are being legally compelled to hand over user data. A system like this would be the mpaa’s dream. not only do they get you for downloading it, they nail you for sharing it, because once it’s on the server, anyone can download it.

Anyone thinking about this service stop and think long and hard before you make a horrible mistake.

As long as torrent indexing sites, sites without a tracker, are being nailed, no one is safe, and this seems to just be asking for trouble.

Also, has anyone taken a look at their vpn clients code? Who’s to say it isn’t a morpheus style scam (google stealth p2p network) or even worse

It’s not exactly advertising in the Bernays sense. It’s not like they’re implying that you somehow need the service to complete your life, or that the site will allow you to express your individuality better.

I think the test is if they get paid for it. If so, then PHAIL, if not, they’re being fairly charitable, I think.

Yes do not even bother with this. Their method of downloading the torrent after it is completed, requires the user to either A:) set up a VPN on their system, or B:) Download and installed a VPN client called Ivacy. Ivacy is a paid VPN service. So you do the math. I’ll stick with the normal method of downloading torrents.
