Fitta, I don't think you're getting the picture right. DRM is not for the benefit of the consumer, it's for the benefit of the big studio executives(' pockets). They're completely out of sync with their reality, which shows that people need affordable prices. With all the money that's being pumped into lawyers, the perpetual redesigning of copy protections, the prices of the music/video/game media are being pumped up unnecessarily. Imagine for a second not having all these expenses and studio executives finally charging a more normal salary... Finally all those low-income consumers can actually AFFORD buying original media. There will always be piracy, but that is to share stuff that is not available to the people that have the demand (and, okay, also for a bunch of teenagers without money). My point is that the piracy levels will drop drastically. At least I personally will buy a lot more media (apart from the 1200 CDs and 200 dvds that I already own), if it would be more affordable. And even then the DRM is a nuisance for me. Not (necessarily) because I'm uploading my entire collection to pirates worldwide, but because I'm backing up all my music and movies on external hard drives to be able to watch them on my computer (I don't own a TV) and to keep my purchased copies in a mint condition. Is that so bad? It's still solely for my personal use at home. And in the digital era this is getting increasingly complicated, as perfectly outlined by the many others here. So, yes, I actually am convinced that DRM and many other bad decisions in the studios drive pirating.

This is the technical viewpoint, but legislation doesn't work that way. By saying "copying isn't really that bad", you're advocating lower penalties for something regarded as criminal, and that accomplishes at most a small reprieve short-term.

What you must do is establish who the criminals, the breakers of the social contract, are. That's the only way you can turn the tide.

It would be interesting to see the blogs you comment. Alas, my points to defend Netjill and Bobfail (=fitta) are the same person are -I think there're more, but it's very late and I'm tired-:

1 - Similar, polite, style when one of them decides to reply instead of hit & run attacks.

2 - Usage of swedish slang. One could argue that one of them took it and re-used that word, but still...

3- Paranoid. As Netjill when complaining why he got downvotes seconds after posting among other things.

I'm extending this to Anon too, since both said the same of piracy being the cause of surveillance, style was similar, and they similar ideas of extreme punishments to filesharers (however I don't remember Netjill being so liar as that redneck, whom I caught several times contradicting.)

First, from a technical standpoint, when it comes to something that is to be viewed or listened to by a human, DRM is futile. Even if you could build a DRM that makes it impossible to digitally circumvent, all it takes is an effort to tap into the video or audio output, record it, and voila, you got the content. This really isn't much harder than what people use to do to VHSes when they had multiple tape players, play the tape on one, record on the other.

That said I think people get a little too extreme here. I strictly stand against the legal aspects of copyright law, that criminalizes the basic human nature to share. That is, the war on sharing from a policy standpoint. Copyright needs to not protect DRM whatsoever and needs to allow non-commercial sharing BETWEEN individuals. Not businesses. No exchange of money. As it is now, I'd be willing to bet 9 in 10 school kids are criminals under the current law and that's just absurd.

That said I also believe in free market, and I think the market can fend for itself, including in the field of DRM. DRM should be legal to break, but it shouldn't be illegal to make, even if it's an utter failure. Pop cans can only be used once by the user, it can't be resealed, it has to be sent back to be recycled, yet pop bottles can be reused. We do not outlaw cans just because it may inconvenience us. With that said, I think DRM should be treated the same way. Just because it's annoying doesn't mean we should ban it. All we should do is simply remove the "legal protection" of DRM.

I first copied because I was underage and poor. I continued because it was incredibly easy compared to the legal options. Then came legal options and decent income, and I tried buying, and I had to go back to copying because of fleecing and DRM.

DRM is nothing but a scam. One more step in the war against the citizen's right to their purchase - all license, no ownership is the copyright scammers' dream.

At least I've found artists willing to sell directly to their fans through Bandcamp etc. The prices are more than reasonable, I get to support the artist and no one else (like MAFIAA or assholes like Sony and Universal), and it is - wait for it - incredibly easy with NO STRINGS ATTACHED! That last bit is what cinches it.

"We should also all remember who started slinging insults in Swedish and
claiming it was okay, because nobody could understand (right Fredrika?)"

WRONG - It was actually Nejtillpirater who was the first to use the name fitta and they called Frederika it but then you bobmail/fitta then started calling Frederika it so you are 2 faced to say about starting insults when you called Frederika fitta and kept calling it to her despite it being pointed out to you by her (after it was pointed out to her by someone) what it meant. Frederika never called you fitta or gave you insults. You really are 2 faced and a hypocrit to blame someone for insults when you used those very same insults on a person that never insulted you!

Well, the poster formerly known as Nejtillpirater was indeed caught conjuring a private one-man army on two or three other blogs so far. So I suppose it isn't too far-fetched to imagine him being our dearly unloved Baghdad Bob as well.

In which case this would now make for over six years in which that sad delusional fanatic has spewed ignorant rubbish and bile all over anyone daring to doubt holy and eternal copyright.
