Exactly. People who say the artists are getting screwed by piracy are full of sh*t. They're getting screwed by the labels and the RIAA. The only cds I buy anymore are from indie bands and only at their concerts, like that it all goes to them. A few bands have literally had a guy on a laptop burning cds while you wait, which I thought was really cool, and well worth $5. Otherwise, I buy concert tickets or t-shirts so the profit goes straight to the band. But actual albums from major labels? No thanks. I'd rather do without.

And might I add, that is pretty f*cked up about Iron Maiden getting $1 per cd sale. That's ridiculous. My uncle (a major Iron Maiden fan) would have flipped his lid back in the day over that (when they first came out and he was much younger). Even now, not a huge fan myself, but I still find those covers totally b*tchin'. I think that's the reason the labels are fighting file sharing. Not because of piracy (well yeah to some extent because that's cash out of THEIR pockets, not the bands), but because a lot of bands have noticed it's a good way to make cash without the labels taking a cut. Distribute online themselves and cut out the middlemen.

i remember derek riggs (designer of the classic iron maiden covers) once pointing out that an artist/band gets only 1$ out of the sale of one cd, and that it's actually more worth their while to sell t-shirts because they can get upto 9-10$ from a single t-shirt instead - 10x more ca$h

and the misbegotten labels have already declared that not 1 cent of the millions they get from limewire will go the artist

Actually, I'm down with what you said. Completely. F*ck the big industries who screw over the artists. I mean as you said, they say it hurts the bottom line, but for some reason they never seem to have proof of that. In fact, all the proof that is available shows that on the contrary, they're making record profits. The movie industry in particular in the past 3 or 4 years has broken it's own records each successive year. And the music industry isn't making a killing in album sales, but what they seem to have lost there has gone on to make record sales in singles (digital or otherwise).

So by all means do what you're doing. I support that. I just said that one part you quoted to throw it in Jack's face. Cause he says constantly that there are options available and people ignore them, when that only is true in some places and not worldwide. I point out things in what he says that aren't true just because I'm sick of the rhetoric.

I support the little guy. In this case independent artists, writers, filmmakers, etc. And people who don't live in the U.S. and aren't privy to the "options" Jack loves to tote.
