The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

FilesTube Tops Google Copyright Takedown List

Google has published detailed information on the wide variety of DMCA takedown requests the company receives for its search engine. During the last month alone Google was asked to remove 1,246,713 links across 24,129 domains, including many torrent sites and cyberlockers. Interestingly enough, Google receives the most takedowns for FilesTube, a colleague search-engine which by itself honors DMCA takedown requests and already removes even more links than Google does.

filestubeUnder the DMCA copyright holders have the right to demand that websites disable access to infringing content. One of the top recipients of these notices is without a doubt Google.

To give the public insight into the scope and nature of this process Google has decided to publish all takedown requests online as part of their transparency report.

“Specifically, we’re disclosing the number of requests we get from copyright owners and the organizations that represent them to remove Google Search results because they allegedly link to infringing content,” Google states.

“We’re starting with search because we remove more results in response to copyright removal notices than for any other reason. So we’re providing information about who sends us copyright removal notices, how often, on behalf of which copyright owners and for which websites.”

The data shows that Google receives by far the most takedown requests for fellow search engine FilesTube. During the last month they disabled access to 43,469 links after being notified by 233 copyright holders. During the last year Google disabled access to 389,512 FilesTube links, twice as many when compared to the 147,318 links from runner-up Torrentz.eu.

Google takedowns for FilesTube

The above is interesting because FilesTube, in common with many other sites in the top list, honors DMCA takedown requests itself. FilesTube owner Arkadiusz Senko told TorrentFreak that he is surprised to see his site at the top of the list, and confirmed that his company also works directly with copyright holders to remove infringing content.

In fact, FilesTube informs TorrentFreak that they remove 2,000,000 links per month from their search index, which is more than Google. These links are removed within 24-hours and FilesTube also adds several filters per day to make sure content with specific infringing file names doesn’t later reappear.

While many of the takedown requests are valid, Google’s data reveals that in some cases the DMCA is abused to apply broad and unwarranted censorship. In this notice, for example, NBC Universal asked Google to block access to a search on FilesTube for the word “battleships,” a term that does not exclusively link to NBC content.

Looking further down the list of targeted domains we see The Pirate Bay listed in 13th place. And because of the Pirate Bay blockades in the UK, the Netherlands and elsewhere, several reverse proxy sites including those of the UK and Dutch Pirate Party are also listed.

Steve Wilson, head of Pirate Party UK’s IT Team, responded by pointing out that removing Google’s search results doesn’t do anything to prevent the actual content from being shared.

“Obviously the removal of search results does not remove the linked content and all of that content is still searchable through the Pirate Bay’s own search page. The linked content itself doesn’t relate directly to material owned by the copyright holder either, but is rather a further link to content held across many computers and accessible via a peer-to-peer network,” Wilson told TorrentFreak.

Google’s data further reveals the Microsoft is the most active copyright holder when it comes to sending takedown notices. The software giant asked Google to block access to a total of 2,544,209 links during the last year, and is followed by NBC Universal and the RIAA with 985,995 and 416,731 targeted links respectively.

One of the reasons why Google made the data public is to aid the ongoing discussions on how online piracy should be addressed. And as we will reveal later today, there’s plenty of discussion possible, especially about some borderline insane takedown requests that reveal how copyright holders sometimes shoot themselves in the foot.

Kids get to school and go “Fuck, what is this shit, my files won’t open.” Teachers spend 2 hours a day clicking through authorising bullshit.

Note to our retard “Chief Minister” Katy Gallegar: Open Office is free and works. Poor kids, rich kids and underpaid teachers alike can share files seamlessly.

But then you would miss out on your free Microsoft lunch, wouldn’t you bitch?

      • Anonymous

Amen to that!  But then M$ would scream about unfair competition….   I used to use the full M$ office suite, don’t ask me why. We now have Open Office on all our computers here. My daughter is taking graphic Design in high school They use Adobe Photoshop. She NEEDS it to do her assignments at home. $699.00 !!!!!!!!!   Wanna know why I hate Adobe? What the fuck does their ‘turn off updates’ do? NOTHING! For some stupid reason, their software has important patches and updates TWICE A DAY! WTF! Simply because Adobe are idiots, I don’t like to use their software and look for alternatives.

Nothing like a product that just screams to be pirated!

Paint.net is a great free alternative to adobe photoshop.  While it does not have some of the fun tools like adobe aftereffects plugin, it does have everything the core photoshop program does, with the same filter and layer effects.  their website is http://www.getpaint.net

        • ChinkEye

Photoshop is a full-on professional package and is priced as such.

Kids should not be using it at home – there is no need. Skills she learns in GIMP or Paint will transfer seamlessly if she pursues Graphic Design as a career.

Adobe does sell Student Licenses – but the dirty pirates here are entirely correct: download that fucker, or get a hooky copy off of one of the other kids, or even one of the lecturers (That’s what I did :) )

Adobe understands this and turns a blind eye.

Thanks to illegal software I can now say to my boss – “I can use this, I need this”

I now have 5000 worth of legit, professionally supported software on my work computer. The company turns over more than 20M, it’s small potatoes to them, and high-end professional software lets them make even more money. These are the people Adobe is selling to, and the only market they really care about Re: Piracy.

Oh, forgot to ask…. your Government pays a fortune for it?  Where does your Government get its money???  YOU pay for it!!!!!!  People should demand their portion back, as there are free alternatives. We have alternatives, but they’ll only improve if there is a popular will to make them improve.

Jump ship – now. I used to love M$ Office, I was convinced it was “the only good one”… that’s bullshit. Go open source, and tell your boss to go open source too.

They say Open Source is worse than piracy…. so it must be good :)

  • jimbob

MS are one of the leaders in take-down requests. Mainly to links offering MS software.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18204411

I hope server 2012 with loader will be up when released – found to be better than windows 8 when I tried them!

    • Danny

The funny thing is I can still find a copy of windows through Google with no effort. I wonder how much sending these requests is costing them?

    • KK

Sometimes I think MS is encouraging consumers to pirate their windows, seeing their protection from cracks is just weak. And they allow pirated versions to get free updates as well. Maybe they want to stop people from going to linux. Don’t you think?

      • Anonymous

I think this is true, depending on what country you live in, if you’re rich and they own the market, they want you to pay. Otherwise, they want you to at least use Windows.

      • OO

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think pirated copies get bug fixes. They only get the security ones. Of course even with using a legitimate copy of Windows 7 (the only OS I’ve actually paid for over the past 30 years or so) I rarely see updates that actually are bug fixes. They’re pretty much always security ones which sucks because there are definitely some annoying bugs that need fixing. Despite all that, you have a interesting hypothesis and I feel there is a good chance you may be right.

Like I said, the more they (the anti-copyright orgs) push, the more we see of them.  Big deal, “here is the stats of every rightsholder thats used DMCA take down”.  Fantastic, here on the web is transparency.  The “otherside: me and you” lives by that and Google is fighting the great fight by telling us who is asking Google to abide by this law.  What do we see?  Is DMCA in error?  Possibly.  Transparency though is interesting….one of the things we all enjoy on the net is anonymity, when lawsuits are being planned they want to know who we are and when google points tells us who they are they dont like it.
You cant have it both ways guys

  • Gu357u53r

I like this, I might go back to using Google again. This really brings to light who the true corrupt there are in the world. The real mafia are the ones doing the takedowns, it’s quite scary if you start snooping around the names that make it on that list. If the NSA thinks it’s going to capture the entire internet with a yottabyte drive, and decrypt it with some 100,000 CPU super computer that has a yottabyte of rainbow tables they got another thing coming. It’s a waste of time because we will just advance our methods of encryption, and password systems by using better cryptography, ciphers, and infinite amount of symbols to stump the huge paper weight. Coming to a country near you, the soon to be banned VPN usage that is the last saving grace of anonymity, bypassing censorship, and your freedoms being stripped away one by one. Sorry sucker.

does this not show just how broken the copyright system is, how easily it can be abused (and is abused, more by the entertainment industries themselves than any other industry, corporation or individual) and how, no matter how hard any site tries to keep on top of all the files available, it is virtually impossible to stop all ‘infringing’ files from being released, there is simply no pleasing the entertainment industries? atm in the UK, an MP, Claire Perry is pushing to have porn blocked completely at ISP level, unless customers opt in. she thinks it is as easy to do as removing a book from a shelf. she seems to have ignored already that their are different age groups in a household, some who perhaps want to view porn, some who dont. how can an ISP implement that sort of filter? why is it that people like her, that haven’t the slightest idea of how to do something over the internet, dont just come along and do it herself, showing everyone else how easy it is, or KEEP THEIR NOSE OUT!!

“Google’s data further reveals the Microsoft is the most active copyright holder when it comes to sending takedown notices.”

One quite interesting thing about this is that many of the links that MS are forcing Google to remove still seem to be available when you search with Bing.

    http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20120524/18190719071/

Of course this couldn’t possibly be an underhand way of MS trying to migrate users to Bing or anything like that.

  • Don’t have a cow , man !

And even with all of this censorship somehow I never have a problem finding and downloading what I want to get.

My hard drives are filled with stuff I download every single day , the very things they are trying to censor off the net.  Only when something is old or obscure , that’s the only time you have to search deep , and I still usually find it.

They have an illusion of success and it makes them happy.
It’s like seeing a monkey on roller skates , it means nothing to them, but it’s so adorable for us.

I often ponder if they believe their cupidity could ever become an auspicious campaign. They do appear to be ebullient at times however the fruits of their labor are for not.
     We shall usufruct
at the expense of intellectual property and be magnanimous in our efforts.

How long can they keep going ? How much money are they spending for this censorship ?

It’s as if they were saxicolous , and had no true idea of how the internet works.

  • Danny

    From the beeb article:

“When Google has been told 100,000 times that sites like The Pirate Bay
and beemp3 distribute music illegally, why do they come top – above
Amazon and iTunes – when I search for ‘download music’?. It’s
irresponsible, it misleads consumers and if Google won’t sort it out
voluntarily, Government should get on with doing something about it.”  said BPI boss Geoff Taylor
