The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Free Anonymous Usenet Downloading With Just a Web Browser

One of the big draws of BitTorrent is that there are few barriers to entry, not least because it’s free to use. There are other downloading options of course, Usenet being one, but it can be a complex and relatively expensive option. However, thanks to a new service, anyone can enjoy simplified newsgroup downloading using just a web browser. Best of all, it’s completely free of charge.

It’s a battle that’s been running in some people’s minds for the last decade. What’s better for downloading – BitTorrent or Usenet?

Chances are, most people reading this post will have used BitTorrent and will have a good idea how it works and what its benefits are. Top of the list for many will be the fact that it’s completely free to use. Others will point to the huge libraries of content and the not-too-punishing learning curve to get started.

Usenet users, on the other hand, will enthuse about the speeds of the newsgroups. They will boast how content stays live for years and how their chosen download method has superior privacy and security when compared to P2P.

In reality, most people won’t have any experience with Usenet and as a result won’t have struggled with the steep learning curve and probably never will. Because unlike BitTorrent, Usenet is not free, so this obstacle is a deal-breaker for the credit card-less. That said, if you’ve never tested Usenet because the cost and learning curve has put you off, today’s your lucky day.

A new service from UsenetStorm reduces the complexity of Usenet downloading by providing access to binary content through a standard web-browser. Best of all, the entry-level service is completely free of charge.

“The main reason for creating UsenetStorm was to offer Usenet binary downloads through HTTP, since file lockers are getting more restrictive and torrent users are being targeted by weak Government puppets,” UsenetStorm owner William Thomas told TorrentFreak.

“Even though UsenetStorm launched its first beta 3 years ago, it’s taken a lot of time and investment to be able to offer the service we do today. Usenet has a lot of content to offer but its gone largely unnoticed over the years. By offering Usenet as SaaS (Software as a Service) we’re trying to bring Usenet in to the modern ‘web 2.0′ world.”

Regular Usenet providers require a user to run a software client in order to grab content via NZB files (think .torrent files for Usenet), but with UsenetStorm the whole thing is done through a simple web interface.

Additionally, even when traditional companies offer a free Usenet trial they still require users to register their credit cards, a huge problem for those who don’t have one. UsenetStorm’s basic service is completely free, no strings.

“The only restriction for free users is 500mb per NZB file and download speeds are capped at 5mbit. Usage is unlimited to everyone without registration,” William adds.

What this means is if you want to download a release from Usenet that’s bigger than 500mb, each NZB file you create will need to link to a maximum of 500mb of files. You can, however, make as many as you like.

Basic Tutorial – Making an NZB file and downloading content.

For this you’ll need a suitable Usenet search engine – NZBIndex.nl or Binsearch.info will do just fine. The latter is less cluttered but the former shows the size of each file to download, useful when keeping within the 500mb limit of UsenetStorm.

So, we searched Binsearch for ‘Dan Bull’ and came across his Mass Effect release, shown below.

Binsearch Dan Bull

As you can see, we’ve ticked the box to say that’s the collection of files we want to download. Next, simply click the ‘Create NZB’ button on the site and Binsearch will send you an .NZB file which, like a .torrent file, ‘points’ to the data we want to download, in this case Dan’s music.

Now, we head back to UsenetStorm. Click ‘Choose File’ and browse to the hard drive location containing the .NZB file sent to us by Binsearch.

UseDanBull

Then, simply click ‘Download’ and UsenetStorm will grab the files you want from Usenet and store them on its own servers.

When the big button appears saying “Go To Download” – click it – and then click the final ‘Download’ button.

DanBullDL

UsenetStorm will then send you the files you asked for, all wrapped up in a single ZIP file which you’ll need to unpack. And that’s it. If you want any more files, simply head back to the first step and repeat.

While the technicalities of PAR files are outside the scope of this article, advanced Usenet users might be interested to know that they are all handled on the UsenetStorm servers. On the other hand, those new to Usenet can be relieved that with UsenetStorm PAR files aren’t needed.

On the privacy front and in addition to all the usual newsgroup security, the only information gathered for unrestricted UsenetStorm premium accounts is an email address and heavily encrypted password. IP addresses are not stored and SSL downloads will come along in the near future.

Overall, UsenetStorm offers a very nice service for people to test out Usenet for free to see if it’s for them. More experienced users might feel more at home getting their hands dirty with a standard Usenet provider and tools like SABnzbd, but for ease of use this is difficult to beat.

We forgot the first rule of Usenet again – sorry

But you gotta admit, the idea is pretty damn good. I honestly think that this will really catch onto the public. But I wonder how long they can provide such high speed and such data restrictions to all users. It seems kinda crazy to think they can still provide this much bandwidth after the users start to get a whiff of how great it is! :P

sounds like it could be a good option. however, not having used newzbin before, how do i actually download a file that is larger than 500meg? how do i/or is it split? how are the multiple parts joined back together after downloading? what time limits, if any, are there between downloading 2 or more files needed to make 1 complete file? no disrespect intended, but if used to newzbin, should be ok, if not i think more help/better explanations needed on it’s use.

    • http://Not.Telling/ Kr0nZ

on binsearch, the files in an nzb are in split rar files, so you just select enough rar part files (rar,r01,r02…etc) untill you have 500m, then create another 500m, and so on untill you have all the rar files.

      • Anonymous

did assume that was the way to go, Kr0nZ. maybe unlucky but the one i just tried spits out when selecting the 2nd lot of rars. gonna try another and see. tnx for response tho and confirming what i thought as the procedure.

        • Anonymous

more info. either i am just real unlucky or it dont work by selecting only some of the rar files, giving an error message that there is something wrong with the nzb file provided. obviously tells you that there is a limit on download file size if selecting more than the size limit and wont proceed. will try again on a file close to the size limit to see if that works.

        • Anonymous

i think there is a time restriction not mentioned, at least i cant find any mention, whereby the 2nd part (or subsequent parts) of a split file cant be downloaded straight after the first part. if correct, i dont know what the wait time is. anyone else know if my assumption is correct? if so, would be good to mention it

Usenet is far superior to Torrents and anyone that have used it knows it. If we would compare the two in porn terms, Usenet would be Hot-Blonds and torrents would be scat-play.

      some people prefer scat-play

    • Anon

They are different protocols and as such, are good for different things. Usenet relies on servers, which BitTorrent doesn’t need. Torrents are entirely peer to peer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gear-Mentation/100003097514663 Gear Mentation

Eh, not really superior.  It’s easier to find things on Torrent.  But Usenet does have more obscure stuff that you can’t get on torrent.  Really, I would never have switched except that Usenet is encrypted/anon (remember to pick encrypted server).

looks like, after you upload the nzb…..they are

        1.downloading the data from usenet
        2.repairing
        3.zipping.
        4.storing
5.provide you with a link to download.

repairing and zipping is processor intensive. Your PROCESSING is probably in a queue.
I Cant see this scaling to lot’s of users Repairing rar files is too intensive.

Seen it tried on FileHoser leech account servers , just auto-unrar , does not scale.
TRY un-Raring multiple rar files at once to see what I mean. A few will grind your system to a crawl.

No, your problem is Transmission itself. Get qbittorrent from the Ubu repository, it’s very nice and doesn’t suck the life out of your bandwidth.  I don’t know why it happens with Transmission, it really shouldn’t make a difference what client you use, but Transmission is consistently slow. Dump it, you’ll be happier.

Those are totally unrelated. No, eternal september has never ended. It is currently September 6857, 1993. In order for September to end, intelligent university laureates would have to be the only ones populating USEnet. No you’re wrong. Unlimited connections and at 1000mbps maxed… all free. I know where to find it :) been using it for 1 year already!!!

  • Randy Lahey

Sabnzbd is web-based, and if you just want a normal no-frills .nzb downloader then Unzbin works pretty well. I know there was a much-needed update released for Grabit but I didn’t check it out because I use Newsleecher 4. They’re all free besides Newsleecher..Personally I wouldn’t pay for newsleecher because I did once and that included some updates but then they asked me to pay again and the program is always in beta/testing. It’s really not worth the $30 a year, they don’t release enough stable versions to warrant that kind of price tag and there are free alternatives to supersearch.

There’s no SSL option for this Usenetstorm program, which is the main reason I’m not even going to look at it.. Another site for nzb’s that wasnt mentioned is Nzbclub.com. I’ve always had a lot of problems with Binsearch, their search engine is very flawed and didn’t produce a lot of accurate results..Something about minimum character length and total characters.

Another tip for searching files: Sometimes they dont include anything other then the names of the actual files when they post. Let’s take one little example so this puts the wheels in motion..If you search for “Megan.Is.Missing.2011.COMPLETE.NTSC.DVDR
-NTX” on any of the sites you’ll get 0 results. But if you google that name around for a bit, you’ll find the file names “ntx-mim”. Plug that into Nzbindex.nl and you’ll find it was posted 402 days ago.

That search tip works efficiently for things like xbox-360 isos. You can actually find the file names on abgx.net and this has two benefits: Spam/fakes dont post using the file names alone, they always use the directory. And the second benefit is that DMCA takedowns are very common, but sometimes when they’re posted by filenames they slip under the radar and go unnoticed.

    • dhjashdj

i’ve never used anything but sabnzbd. do other downloaders automatically unpack rars and repair broken files with pars, and try to fetch missing pars? if so i might take a look at some other options.

      • Randy Lahey

Newsleecher & Grabit & Unzbin all support automatic verification/repair/unpack/delete original archive. The lightest/simplest of the 3 is Unzbin, the interface looks just like utorrent and it barely uses any memory, but it’s only function is .nzb

        • dhjashdj

thanks, i’ll give unzbin a whirl.

        • unzbin rocks

Unzbin also doesn’t download Par files unless it needs them.
(majority of downloads are 86%-90% of package…. pretty cool)

Last time I used Grabit, it didn’t do that. Don’t know about Newsleecher.

      • MrBiG

Alt.Binz is another good option. Been using it for years.

    • DutchGuest

I’ve been using nzbindex for years now, first with Grabit, now with SabNZBd…
Hell, i just remembered i used to use NZB-O-Matic before that… remember that one ?
Was a major piece of crap, and you had to use quickpar and winrar manually back then, so it was a shit ton of work…
But it was the best solution because bittorrent was still being made and unknown at the time, Napster had died, and Kazaa and WinMX just didn’t cut it.

      • Randy Lahey

Never used nzb-o-matic, back then I was into Newsbin Pro..But the owner (Quade..Slade..whatever his name was) had a personal grievance with me over something I discussed on the forum..He was even nice enough to call me out by my first name and the city I lived in, something tells me he still doesn’t get out of the house too often.

Quickpar! Remember Smartpar? What a headache. I don’t miss the days of 3-day retention and having to download all group headers just to see what’s floating around >.<

        • DutchGuest

Yeah, that was hellish, having to constantly header EVERYTHING, and having to scour obscure forums to see which post was what.

Yes, you have to filter out the encrypted/passworded files, but that’s just like trying to find good files on Torrent… it’s no different, you are liable to get bad files on either service.

  • Gearmentation

SABnzbd is easy to use, I think you overestimate the difficulty of Usenet.  I’m new to it, within a couple of months, and while it’s not as easy as Torrenting, it is less spammy.  You just have to look out for passworded files.  It is easier to find NEW things on Torrent, but slower to download, and Usenet has more obscure files that  you can’t find on Torrent and if you did you couldn’t get them because there aren’t any seeds. It is also easier to know if you are downloading the right file because of the reviews.   And with Usenet you need to remember to hook up to a server which is encrypted, otherwise your ISP will inspect your traffic and you will be “educated” that what you are doing is bad bad bad bad bad bad strike 6!…. oh well you’re not listening.  But relative to copyright trolls/MPAA it’s much safer, maybe perfectly safe if encrypted.  I recommend Astraweb as a provider with SABnzbd, but I’m new and haven’t tried other things.  Astraweb seems to have the best reputation, and for $50 you can get a terabyte of data.

Here’s my method to find things on usenet:

Search for what you want, avoid anything that says “German” “Encrypted,” or otherwise looks funny.

If there is any doubt, search for the same thing on a torrent search engine http://torrentz.eu/

Go to a site that has torrent reviews

Search for the same file (or close to it) on http://www.mysterbin.com

Sometimes Usenet has larger higher definition versions of the same thing.

It’s pretty easy, and much faster downloading and more reliable and legally safer than Torrents, for the moment anyway.

free index sites are nice, because it’s free and people who provide things they don’t have to for free are cool, but you should do yourself a favor and sign up for nzbmatrix.com 11 dollar 1 time fee. you won’t regret it and it makes things so much easier. when you search for something, it will be what you are looking for. plus the comments are invaluable in figuring out if something is missing parts or whatever. you won’t regret it. you can sign up for free just to have a look around but free accounts are limited to something like 15 days retention.

Yes, I know and the only reason I haven’t already is I don’t think there is any way to filter out passworded files… and
mysterbin.com does do that.  But I think I will anyway, their service is much better as you say (:

        • dhjashdj

i have literally never gotten a passworded file on nzbmatrix ever. it would be immediately nuked and removed from the list. i download music/movies/tv and games just fyi.

        • MrBiG

NZBMatrix doesn’t allow pass-worded posts unless the password is known and posted.

  • TorrentPowerUser

There was a problem with the .nzb file you provided. Please try another nzb.
Usenet some ISPs provide free accesses but it’s a few, so there is no money no Usenet (some said it ;s old than WWW) and these greedy people want to pay them for what to go fuck themselves

So fuck it, use P2P (torrents, emule, hubs etc.)

This is not cool at all. Way not cool. What the hell is wrong with people? It is great because it is not easy. Let the recording studios go after the low hanging fruit. Dont make usenet something any jerk with with internet explorer can use. This does not bode well.

    • TorrentPowerUser

And what is great may I reach speeds like bit torrent like 100Mbps for exm?
Most torrent clients have encryption option , proxy options, if you want to stay under the radar.
Is there any left people use this old crap

      • dhjashdj

You’re complaining about a free service and that’s fine but you’re misguided on a couple things. If you pay for usenet service, say 11 dollars a month at astraweb or 9.99 a month at supernews you get ssl encryption included. see the problem with torrents is encryption only hides what you are downloading from your ISP. the mpaa can hire a company to hop in to a torrent swarm and grab a list of IPs. encryption doesn’t help you there. they have your ip, uploading a file at a specific time and that is usually enough for them to send you a threatening settlement letter. If you use usenet, you get encryption, so your isp can throttle you, AND no one can ever get your ip. most PROPER usenet clients have all the options a torrent client would. encryption, proxy, etc. and to answer your last question, yes millions of people still use this old crap.

        • dhjashdj

oh right one other thing, proper usenet can download at 100Mbps. not only that but it will start downloading at 100Mbps immediatly from the second you hit the download button.

        • Anon

Of course if you use torrents and you’re a bit savvy you use an OpenVPN service that doesn’t, or at least says it doesn’t, keep logs. Couple this with firewall rules that prevent P2P if the OpenVPN service fials and you’re just as safe as the usenet leechers.

        • dhjashdj

true but most vpn options cost money. certainly any vpn that is going to offer 100Mbps is going to cost money. but everything you said is 100% true. you CAN be anonymous with torrents.

      • Anonymous

You can put sabnzbd on a VPS with a gigabit line and download at incredible speeds. Also it does not matter if you download bittorrent at 100mbs on a seedbox when most broadband is capped at 2mbs. You still need to FTP into the server and get your stuff and that is limited by your own connection. All usenet that is worth its weight has SSL encryption and no headers.

        • theonlyone

Yeah but if there is a data cap with the ISP Usenet will still trigger it. FTP can be SSL with OpenVPN or similar. Most broadband is not capped at 2 mbs, A common connection is 10 mbs unless someone lives in an obscure region with lower population.

        • Derpingtons

           >most broadband is capped at 2 mbs
          lol, move out of Africa

    • alt173

Actually, from looking at all the comments about errors that indicate this site does not work, it actually might help to sour the newbs to usenet, making them think it still sucks (because the site sucks) and want to stick to P2P…. Reverse marketing at its finest!!

      • dhjashdj

i was thinking the same thing. this combined with the fact that the results from the two free indexers mentioned in the article can be really confusing if you don’t know what to look for could indeed spoil newbs to usenet.

Maybe in my case is queued because what I want has no seeders anymore? I searched in TPB and I noticed the same content has no seeders. Can someone explain how Usenet search for these files? Are they stored in one computer, from the uploader?

If you dont like Usenet and want to download fast and safe through torrents get a seedbox. Try one out for free. Amazingly fast download/upload speeds. You can FTP encrypted from their server to your PC. Get one that has unlimited data cap and a lot of storage space. Also one that does not keep data logs. I would recommend underleech.org.

Typo in the article, according to the front page, the DL cap for free users is 500kb/s, not 5mb/s , otherwise, site works fine, searched up a album and downloaded it at 400kb/s, better than i usually get in torrents and without having to worry about lolmafiaa.

    • SSL Only

Glad it worked for you because it does not work for anyone else.

Also, 500 kb/s is dirt slow.

Just get a free copy of Grabit and a free SSL account at http://xsusenet.com/.

They offer (free) 2 connections at 1 mb/s but you can set it to 4 connections and actually get 2 mb/s.  AND IT IS SSL.

Whenever i see a usnet service advertised i keep thinking of how it is a moneymaking scam, always was and always will be. It is not as reliable as torrenting and is actually very  inefficient compared to bittorent.  I look at all the comments in here and the people advertising there software or servers and laugh, you really don’t have to advertise for business when you share a torrent. Y.ou don’t have to pay for the stuff you get free either, and about speed ……. i download my stuff at the max my connection can handle so where would usenet help me there, as i said it is just a sales pitch, everyone ignore and wait for the upcoming torrent software that makes you anonymous when sharing. I am sure it will be with us by the end of this year or some time next year at the latest.

    • It’s a fit-up

      This is fanboy talking gibberish.

My usenet account has never failed, ALL my downloads are at the maximum speed my ISP can supply (60gb/s) constantly. I have unlimited downloads (and by unlimited I don’t mean my mobile phone providers idea of unlimited) , content is available for 3 years and Newsleecher supplies a search service. On top of that I will never get some asshole lawyer demanding a few grand for Ben Dover or the MAFIAA.
All this for about £10 a month.

Torrents rarely ever give you max speed especially when the torrent is new whatever this idiot claims, you can get sued, they can be removed at any time and they monopolise all your upload capacity (Not that I’m a leecher on torrent).

Usenet isn’t for everyone but it is definitely a superior service.

      • LSD Trip

        Cool. 60 gb/s. That’s 60 gigabits per second.
        That’s 60,000 megabits per second.

Cat 5 cable only carries 100 mbps.
Cat 6 cable can carry 1,000 mbps.

        Dang. 60,000 mbps!
Do you have to drop ACID to get that speed?
I want what ever your taking!

[disclaimer: I'm posting while under the influence of whisky.  If this comment is - to the sober mindset - unduly harsh, then I sincerely apologise.  No great offense is intended, although I'm bang alongside the idea of mild offense]

I don’t want to be mean to a fellow commenter on TF, especially one who is anti-copyright, but in your case it’s hard to avoid, sorry.

        • 60gb/s: bollocks.  If you meant 60mb/s then you should’ve said so.  FFS.

        • On torrents, there are universally no limits to what you can download, providing you seed back on so-called private sites, which is only fair.  Since you seem to be advocating Usenet as a pay-to-leech solution, it’s hard to see what active contribution you’re making to the fight against the copywrong trolls.  This is – to my mind – a bad thing and not something to boast about.

        • Content is available for three whole years?!  Wow!!  That’s fantastic!!!  I do genuinely believe my sarcasm gland is about to detonate, taking my whole head with it!!!!!!!!!!!

        • You’ll never get a DMCA or a threatening letter: I’m sorry, but this is just pussyism of the highest order.  Try to butch up, just a bit.  You know you want to.

        • Torrent speeds: I realise my connection isn’t the fastest in the world, but I typically get the maximum speeds my ISP provides, from both open and private torrent sites (not counting the more incredibly obscure / old stuff).  If you don’t, you might want to do some research into setting up your BT client correctly.

        • Superior service: I don’t agree.  I haven’t looked into Usenet in any great depth, but from what I can see, it just seems to be a pay-to-leech service not inherently any better than a good filehost, it’s a lot more inaccessible and annoying than either filehosts or torrents and – very importantly, to my mind – doesn’t have anything like the community and spirit of cameradery I find on good torrent sites.

I’m not inherently a fanboy for any file-sharing solution, but ultimately, torrents are giving me what I want and Usenet seems unlikely to do so – and for me, that’s the end of that.

        • Do your research

Sabnzbd + SickBeard. I go to IMDB, click ‘download’, and if there is a release for it, it will be there as fast as my connection can deliver. If it hasn’t been released, it comes when it’s out. Including the correct quality and language. Usenet is not ‘inaccessible’, and – for me – not annoying. Give me something that does this for torrents, with the same reliability.

        • Rekrul

Since you seem to be advocating Usenet as a pay-to-leech solution, it’s
hard to see what active contribution you’re making to the fight against
the copywrong trolls.  This is – to my mind – a bad thing and not
          something to boast about.

It’s true that Usenet is one-way (at a time) unlike torrents, however, anyone with a Usenet account is also free to post to any of the newsgroups. Yes, it normally takes a little more effort to prepare large files for posting, but if a person wants to contribute, they can. I haven’t been participating as much as I used to, but I’ve posted a few movies to fill requests, episodes of TV shows, etc.

Content is available for three whole years?!  Wow!!  That’s
fantastic!!!  I do genuinely believe my sarcasm gland is about to
detonate, taking my whole head with it!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless a torrent is really popular, anything over a year old usually doesn’t have any seeds left. I’ve tried to download stuff that was posted six months ago and it just sits there with no seeds.

Torrent speeds: I realise my connection isn’t the fastest in the world,
but I typically get the maximum speeds my ISP provides, from both open
and private torrent sites (not counting the more incredibly obscure /
          old stuff).

I’ve been using torrents for TV shows lately, since the XviD versions aren’t getting posted to the newsgroups anymore and I download some stuff for others who watch it on DVD players. Anyway, most downloads start at about 10K/s, slowly build up to maybe 1.2/M/s and take about 12-15 minutes to finish. The same size Usenet downloads start at around 4M/s for me and finish in around 3-4 minutes.

Superior service: I don’t agree.  I haven’t looked into Usenet in any
great depth, but from what I can see, it just seems to be a pay-to-leech
          service

I see a lot of people putting it down because it’s a pay service, but then they turn around and recommend paying for a seedbox. Isn’t that a pay-to-leech service? Sure, it seeds whatever you download, but how many people pay for one, just so that they can seed? I’m guessing pretty much nobody. They pay so that they can download and seeding is just an extra that they get.

not inherently any better than a good filehost, it’s a lot more
inaccessible and annoying than either filehosts or torrents and – very
importantly, to my mind – doesn’t have anything like the community and
spirit of cameradery I find on good torrent sites.

A lot of people today just use NZB files to download what they want. In fact, many programs are just NZB downloaders with no ability to do much else. However, every newsgroup can be used for discussion as well as uploading files. In fact, that’s the original purpose of the newsgroups. Maybe it’s not so true in the large groups, but in a lot of the smaller, niche groups, you often find just as many conversations as files. People request specific things, talk about the quality of what’s posted, etc. Many groups have just as much of a community spirit as any torrent site.

  • It’s a fit-up

Freat idea a free service but the paid versions are a total rip off.

  • K Anon

Speaking as an experienced user of netnews (the generic term for newsgroups encompassing Usenet and alt.binaries.*), public and private trackers, and darknets, netnews is not quite as good as it once was, but still holds its own even compared to many private trackers depending on the material you want.  If you are not satisfied with your current filesharing experience, I suggest trying to find material you are interested in on sites such as Binsearch.  (PROTIP: Try using the Scene release filename for games and applications.)  You may be pleased or disappointed at what you find.

By far the best usage case for netnews is the low-bandwidth user–think otherwise well-off rural users or some Europeans.  If your upload speed is absurdly capped or if you are on satellite, BitTorrent, especially private trackers, is not quite viable.  You could use a seedbox, but you can’t take advantage of it without downloading a lot there for seeding–utlimately exceeding what you can grab on your side.  Using a seedbox on public trackers is generally unadvised.  For a similar cost or lower, you can opt for a netnews connection and still have access to a good range of content.

Though I now have a good connection, I say this somewhat authoritatively as less than a decade ago, I was a dial-up user.  Even then, such a connection was dated, and in my area, it would drop as low as 14.4K!  Experiments with BT were only partly successful, and I was constantly kicked from long IRC fserve queues and experiencing DCC download drops.  (And don’t get me started on old “warez” Web sites. You kids today are blessed with your filehosts.)  I then discovered through my ISP’s homepage that they had started a netnews service (that I later found out was actually outsourced to Giganews).  Remember that the whole gimmick that’s advertised by providers today is that you can start downloading instantly anything in the newsgroup.  (This was before NZBs, so there was the exciting but arduous process of getting the headers.)  In curiosity, I checked out the anime screencaps and manga groups that I could view on Outlook Express (which didn’t even support the more efficient yEnc).  Amazed at this new potential, I quickly moved to XNews and bathed myself in the groups’ full glory.

That was a bright, sunny day in the midst of the Dark Ages of my Internet use.   By constantly downloading, I could finally keep a decent schedule of music, books, and anime fansubs (and pics–I’m obsessed with pretty pictures) by having my machine always up, incessantly accumulating the tiny 3-5KB/s stream and redialing as necessary.  But surely the download will mess up?  No problem: just grab some PAR2s.  I probably prospered more than any 56Ker in the entire state, and I bragged of this like the autistic derp I was at my high school (but I did not go into clear details because of the Fight Club mentality).  (I’m sugar-coating this a bit; I did get annoyed with the rather limited retention screwing me over at times, but this does not apply nearly as much, now.  I also “fondly” remember giving back by uploading stuff I found through FTP, only to be screwed over by the lights going out yet again.)

My early teenage years aside, I do heartily recommend this option for lower bandwidth users, as you will even now get much more out of it than other options, especially with filehosts dying.  Just prepare to learn how to filter out the garbage, and you’ll be fine for now.

    • Gearmentation

Great advice and very entertaining, thanks for sharing :D  But I would have killed for your bandwidth, I got 2.4 kbps for years, and yes I could still download.

thankfully my ISP offers usenet for free. The download cap is roughly the same as this service, but the file size can be anything.

  • hmmm

Split up the file I wanted into <500MB chunks, got 3 of them, trying to get the 4th I get "You have reached the cap limit for your account type." Can't find anywhere which 'cap' the message is refering to… it's <500MB and I'm not downloading anything else.

    • Achkun

Yes, I experienced the same thing, it appears that they limit you (free user) to only 3 downloads per 24h, per IP. And that’s pretty crappy.
Another free web-based usenet provider is http://www.usegrab.com , which offers bigger DLs (up to 1gb), the speed is about 5mbps as well (you can have 3 parallel downloads, resulting in 1.5-2MB/s speed), but it’s unlimited in the number of downloads per day. Unfortunately, it easily gets overloaded, so sometimes you have to wait for your links for hours :(. Anyways, when it’s not overloaded, it’s a very good service for it’s price (free :)).
