I am angry about UG mostly only since there was no reason to close it since the games were no longer being sold and it was only a plus for developers because if they would suddenly decide to make a sequel - they would get better sales. Obviously watchdogs who did this are simply uneducated and stupid people who only can cowardly do things behind the people's backs.

UG was all about preserving history and old games without profiting from them like GOG does. Also it was a great community of retro-gaming enthusiasts which was a true gem in the internet world. Personally I will support only a couple of developers from now on only and some indie ones. Others can die out with their greed for money together with all anti-piracy organizations.

The reason for centralization is preservation. If everything is decentralized, a lot of people tend to just close things down when they are done. Things that are less popular are the first to go, but often enough even somewhat popular things can lose all their seeds really. And since this is about Underground Gamer, I should point out that really obscure and old things are even worse. It's hard enough for anyone to even find such a thing in the first place, but to keep it seeding with absolutely no incentive whatsoever is pretty rough. You don't even know for sure if "friends" are downloading because the decentralization ensures that no one knows anything. Centralized trackers with their ratio requirements and etc ensure that stuff is preserved which normally would not be. On some of the strictest trackers I've seen people hold onto things that they should have let go of for years even. (If anything some things end up seeded TOO well.) With decentralization they wouldn't bother and it can often get dangerously close to "0 day" type stuff.

That said, the move towards decentralization hasn't slowed or reversed, it's just focused on the places where that "0 day" style is accepted and even kind of wanted such as The Pirate Bay which switched to magnet links a long time ago and more recently went to a system that basically keeps the whole site small enough to fit on a flash drive and deployable from anywhere at a moment's notice if someone tries to take them down. It hasn't slowed or reversed, it just doesn't belong in places like Underground Gamer that are about preserving data rather than preserving torrenting.

This is one reason I support independent games like those funded through Kickstarter. I will make an effort to support games like Wasteland 2. It was funded through Kickstarter. The big companies shouldn't be worried about piracy because the people who pirate probably won't buy the game anyway. As for taking town BitTorrent sites, well there are other ways to download games besides BitTorrent and I don't see piracy stopping any time soon. Back in the 80s I remember people used to have copy parties where each person would buy a game and then they would have a copy party while they copied the disks for everyone. Not that I did anything like that.
