George Bush vs. The RIAA?
Written by Ernesto on April 16, 2006Bush likes to listen to the Beatles on his Ipod. However, there’s no way Bush can have a legal copy on his Ipod according to the RIAA. We got it on tape.
Earlier this week CNN reported that the Beatles might be available in the Itunes store in the near future. Until today however, they refused to put their songs online.
Since the Beatles are not available in the Itunes music store (or elsewhere), they must have come from a “ripped cd”. And that’s NOT fair-use according to the RIAA
“Nor does the fact that permission to make a copy in particular circumstances is often or even routinely granted, necessarily establish that the copying is a fair use when the copyright owner withholds that authorization. In this regard, the statement attributed to counsel for copyright owners in the MGM v. Grokster case is simply a statement about authorization, not about fair use.”
So those songs on Bush his Ipod are illegal, let’s sue

Wow… dare I say, millions of people are in “violation” of the RIAA’s self-declared law. Good for the President to enjoy whatever music he wants to enjoy on his own iPod.

1. Just because the RIAA says something, doesn’t mean it’s the law.
2. Unless Capitol Records has said that their CD’s should not be copied, the point is moot anyway.

The RIAA is full of crap! The fair use policy allows for creation of a backup. So whats the difference if you back it up onto another CD or onto your iPod? They can go after whom ever they want and they will still loose that lawsuit every single time. The fact that the RIAA is not going after Apple for creating a way to rip a CD in iTunes just shows how weak of an argument it is. With regard to them suing Bush, is it even possible to sue a sitting president? I am pretty sure he is immune from civil penalties while on office, but I could be wrong.

Hello? The Supreme Court ruled TEN YEARS AGO that it’s legal to sue a sitting president for activities outside the scope of his official duties. Look it up.
so, what exactly is illegal in this # step process?:
1. buy cd from shop
2. rip cd to harddrive
3. upload music to ittunes
4. put itunes music on ipod
since 1, 3, and 4 are obviosly legal, then it is either 2. or the combination of all 4 that is illegal.
if anyone know the bloodly RIAA ruling on this id be happy to hear it.

Ok, Seriously we should try to find some way for the RIAA to Go After IPOD and other MP3 Makers, APPLE, Creative, all sell software (ITunes, Creative Media Organizer, and more that comes with the lame technology allowing ripping in high quality. Big companies like apple make money but the RIAA lQQks The other way. Because they can make money from it. When the well runs’ dry who and what will be their next target.
Lets not get it all twisted, the ONE fact that everyone is missing is that if the ARTIST or LABEL say don’t make copies of my stuff, THEN it becomes illegal. APPLE RECORDS (the Beatles label, who has and is sueing APPLE computer for pissing in their backyard) is one of those labels that says in the fine print that YOU CANNOT. Although I feel the RIAA is a toothless loin that roared too late to stop the stampede, this one time “The are correct”.
i dont think the artists really give two hoots about mp3 and p2p apart from metallica but most bands only get 8% from each cd that sells they make all their cash when touring so its more the labels that are againest p2p as its less cash lining their pockets
If he ripped his own, from a disc he paid for, it’s covered legally as a back up copy. So this was just an excuse to smear him. He’s made enough real mistakes, this kind of attack is for the weak. He’s far from a 15 year old putting 50 gig’s of songs on p2p for free.
Breaking a law is breaking a law. Reguardless if it is a one time offense or not, still breaking the law. Get high and mighty and defend Bush. But he’s just as guilty as that 15 yo you claim is totally different. Breaking a law one or two times is still illegal. Dont try to justify it…

I am not Bush supporter. Didn’t vote for him and was unhappy he won. This is not about Bush. If using your own CD’s that your purchased legally on your own Ipod is illegal then it’s a silly law that should be disobeyed. After all, we paid for the music and should have a right to reasonably enjoy it as long as we’re not using it for a commercial venture.
Hoe about when you used to buy a record and tape it on to a audio cassette ……………………that was and still is legal, you are not selling the music , just puting it to a different media like uploating to ipod…………….right!!!!

RIAA does not believe ripping CD’s to mp3 players are legal, yet making backup CD is legal. President Bush broke the RIAA’s “rules” by having a backup copy on his mp3 player. It just goes to show how ludricous is the RIAA’s position. IF they sue Bush, that would be histerical! Since I would hope the RIAA would be smarter than that, the RIAA will not sue Bush.
The RIAA may allow a backup, but try to rip a backup from a new Capitol Records CD. You’re out of luck! I promise that I will never again purchase another CD from Capitol. I can’t even play my legally purchased CD on my PC. It will play in the car. It will play on my DVD/CD player in my living room, but when I try to play it on my PC, it merely comes up with Macromedia cover page that doesn’t give an option to play the freakin’ tunes! A legal owner of a CD should have the right to use it for personal entertainment in any way he or she pleases. Boycott Capitol Records and all others like them!

no, he is not immune from civil penalties, look what happened to Nixon and Clinton, but I highly doubt he will lose this case, or even that the RIAA will sue, it’s just insane. What are they going to do, sue the world? As a mucician, I believe that downloading from sites like limewire is wrong, but there is a point where I have to put my foot down. Why should people have to purchase music twice? You know what the RIAA reminds me of, that snot nosed little tattle tale that just about everyone has had growing up in school.

There are many who assume the point of the argument is to attack G. W. Bush.
Although I am not a fan of the President’s policies, I do not see that argument.
What I see is the argument that if the President does it, is casual about it, sees nothing wrong with it, then as the primary representative of all US citizens, what does that say about the policies of the RIAA?
Basically, is the RIAA wrong in their policies OR are the basic, everyday practices and expectations of the US citizenry right?
Either the RIAA sues the President or admits their logic in court is without merit - it cannot be both ways because the law itself does not allow for their to be a distinction based on the who’s involved, only the what’s and the how’s.

RIAA is wrongfull, why isnt the president being sued?
First off, it doesn’t matter what the artist or label says. Fair use LAW states I can make a backup of any MEDIA I own… That includes Audio CD, Data CD, DVD, VHS, Cassette, Blue-Ray, HD-DVD… ANY media… Secondly, the RIAA, has no authority over anything legal. Everyone wants to make the RIAA out to be the DEA. Congressional authority to music? Don’t think so.
Stopping someone from making a backup of media that they have PAID for is OBSTRUCTION OF THE LAW, and therefore punishable!
RIAA needs to be sued for making frivolous lawsuits.
