This is just another Law. Laws ate meant to be broken. People like you and me need rules so we can break them. If there weren't any rules life for us would be pointless. Let the Americans and the Brits do their best. As always they are playing catch up anyways. Leaders stay as leaders and Gov' as followers that's whats happen been happening since time began. Show you are a leader and a freedom fighter by proving no matter what the outcome will be still getting what we want, when we want and how we want.

The fact that they have done anything in the past to get onto the good or bad graces of the general populace is irrelevant in this case. It bugs me, yes, but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really do anything but hurt google's reputation.

What bugs me is the idea that they have more power and ability to change laws, pass/stop bills, and effect court cases than those the government is supposed to answer to: Us.

I do admit that people are lazy; I'm lazy, you're lazy. We don't want to go out, gather a group and start demanding the government's cooperation. The thing is, we shouldn't have to.

People have never really had the resources to force the government's hand. If we want something done, we can request it through letters and movements, but all that can be completely ignored without any repercussion. Where is my option to vote on all this new censorship and security? Did I just miss the ballot in the mail, or the secure website where I can cast my vote for or against it? Of course not; the people were not given the option to vote.

Stifling free speech behind the scapegoat of child porn, national security and counterfeit goods is an attack on the foundation this country was built upon and it needs to stop.

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."

Google has the power to placate all content companies within days. All they'd need to do is keep pirate/torrent/warez etc sites on page 6 or lower, like they do when they spank other sites, often for no apparent reason. That would lead to a vast majority of traffic being driven to the content creators again, and everyone in the know could just click page 6 to get the results they want. People would make page 6 extensions that always loaded that page by default, etc.

They're creating the problem, at least a huge chunk of it. I bet a lot of the content creators who are lawyering up lately would lay off with that kind of move too. The fact is, it's really hard for normal business to compete with stolen goods. Replace stolen with whatever word you find palatable. There's just no reason that the top 3 pages of results for every term imaginable should go to often empty or scraped torrent site listings. It makes google's algo look stupid too. I just searched for a National Geographic TV show, and 5 or 6 torrent sites came up before the show's page at nationalgeographic.com showed up. I had to dig for it! That's a search quality issue. And anyone who makes a good, relevant fact filled resource site for that show will be outranked by these torrent sites too. It's a creativity killer.

If someone IS looking for the torrents, I don't think they'll mind having to search at their favourite torrent site, or add "torrent" to their search or whatever. Facepalm google, facepalm.

Hmmm isn't that what we have now? This very thread is being monitored by intelligence collecting governments and agencies around the world. It is being logged, charted, compared, compiled, sorted, you name it. They'd rather have you talking and giving up as much as you'll give rather than silencing you. No country other than China has the possibility of silencing their citizens, or controlling what they read or hear. Therefore with that out the window, the next best thing is to be the eye in the sky.
