my heart bleeds for you...NOT. Boasting of living the good life, on an
income which was 10 times the max income I ever had. I'm involuntarily
retired, and living on a Social Security income just barely enough to
pay my housing expenses. Prices of books and movies have risen 20-40 times
over what they were when I was younger. So I download a lot. Mostly
copies of the 90 cartons of books I own, to save trouble of searching
for them, and of old TV shows. I haven't watched a new TV show or movie
for 3 years. Can't afford cable TV, and most of it's crud, anyway. On
the other hand, I just bought 2 CDs of music by an artist whose work I
like(he's also a great guy to talk to).
If prices were more reasonable, I could afford more purchases.

What's really funny is the notion I've seen here that some of the
companies that are bitching about download sites are also among those
supporting them with ads. This is really not unreasonable. When I had
more money for purchasing things, I would sometimes find something on
download which appealed to me, then search for and buy more works by
that author/artist.

<i>"It made me smile to see your copyright notice on the bottom."</i>

For purveyors and makers of open source adding a copyright tag is usually the only way to prevent someone else from claiming copyright on it.

This is part of the problem. Copyright law actually means unless you defend your right of "distribution" someone else can come along and claim you aren't allowed to distribute your own product.

Copyright gets you coming AND going in that regard.

<i>"I'd hate to think what "entertainment" might look like in an era of
minimal budgets due to no enforceable consumer pricing. Maybe people of
the future will look back at the "old" industry and call it the "golden
age"..."</i>

They might. I still maintain that enforceable consumer pricing is not, never was, and never will be the criteria which determines a budget. If it were, why do companies regularly spend millions on advertising, commercials, or even the aforementioned anime?

There are many ways of skinning a cat. Charging for copy distribution may just prove not to be one of those anymore.

<i>"I suppose that's exactly what's happening now with the entertainment industry stakeholders. I bet they really do see the writing on the wall even though they may fear to say it in those hallowed halls."</i>

I suppose you are correct. The likes of Chris Dodd will keep making money hand over fist all the way up until someone realizes he's running a con game. At which point he can retire, laughing all the way to the bank.

The people who have tied their lives and fortunes to the copyright cult are the ones who will face the music, gouged until the end by their handlers.

The really surprising ones are the middle management. The people who aren't big movers but who contribute each and every day in trying to make the con soar. For those I can offer only this as a comparison...
