Harry Potter Fans Transcribe Book from Photos

Written by Smaran on July 18, 2007

A group of Harry Potter fans are collectively typing out “Deathly Hallows”, the final episode in the Harry Potter series, from photographs leaked of each page in the book.

Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsA torrent containing a text PDF file of the first ten chapters of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” has started to appear on torrent sites all over the web.

We first spotted it on mininova, when a reader tipped us off. It has also shown up on several other BitTorrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, whose admins have refused to take down any of the “Deathly Hallows” torrents, despite admirable efforts by J.K. Rowling’s publishers.

According to the reader, who chose to remain anonymous, the torrent contains a PDF of the first ten chapters and a text file with a message calling for assistance in transcribing the book from the photos:

We are looking for help in finishing the book. With enough people it goes quickly. Please contact harry7pottah@hush.com to get in contact with us. No skills beyond reading and writing are required and help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems rather ludicrous that this is happening mere days before the book’s release. Why bother typing out the entire book from photos when it will hit bookshops all over the world in less than a week? The only plausible reason seems to be a trait of rabid fanboyism only seen among Harry Potter readers and users of Apple’s Macintosh computers.

But it looks like some people aren’t even ready to believe the book has actually been leaked! MTV blogger Jennifer Vineyard claims that the book’s a fake:

First of all, there are multiple versions that contradict one another. One table of contents, for instance, calls chapter 10 “Kreacher’s Tale,” while another table of contents calls the same chapter “The Reflection in the Mirror.”

We will only know whether the leaked photographs are photoshopped or not when the book is released a few days from now, but for argument’s sake I’m going to point out that “The Reflection in the Mirror” is the 10th chapter in a fake fan fiction torrent of the book that has been floating around the Internet for days, if not weeks. In the leaked photographs, the 10th chapter is “Kreacher’s Tale”. It looks like the MTV guys have been downloading torrents. For research purposes, of course.

update: chapters 11-21 are transcribed.

update: all chapters are transcribed.

frustrated with the unethical attack on TF. I have uploaded the story at my blog which is http://ideaflashed.blogspot.com.

I need to make upload the original Epilogue, which has been authenticated as original by Agencies of repute and had access to to the hard copy of the book.

Update
I have also flashed the news across the TV channels in India with the authenticated details and has been provisional confirmed by the distributor for India.

The hard copy leak is an insider job from the publication right owners.

There is no point in blaming the P2P network for the information.

I have all the 700+ images which i have OCR scanned.

But to upload the whole OCR files in document format is intangible because of sheer file size of it.

the downloads and the OCR scans with me has been authenticated because of the digital fingerprinting i had on the done on the images which had the the GPS and the camera part item and other time stamp details.

The publishers are at at a dead end although it is not going to affect their sales. But the point is hyped security for the release has been intruded due to human interaction with the hard copy of the book and not a technology breach and there was no reason for a e-mail threat by an ignorant HP freak or the publishers/author’s laments.

You people Need to get lives. Not one of you has any clue what you are talking about. You are all speaking straight out rubbish. You don’t have a clue if any of this so-called “Leaking” is true. Who dies and who lives isn’t up to you. It is up to the real author of the book, and unless your name is J.K. Rowling, I suspect you better back of making assumptions when you don’t have the nearest clue as to if they are right or night. An estimate or guess here and there, sure! but to make it seem as though you believe all of these fake internet stories? Where are you people coming from? You do not have the right to make the accusations you are making. Read up on J.K., then you’ll eventually figure out that she does, infact, know what she is doing. She is not a fool, and she would not let her book fall into the hands of the wrong person.

SmarterBookGeek247,
Shut up. You are stupid. We don’t care weather you want to hear the truth or not just because it may not be exactly what you want or was expecting to hear. Who knows? The “leaking” may very well be a true story. We will just have to wait and see. Okay? We Potter Fans are only guessing. That’s all.

i can give acess to my computer and my website domain.

if the are are any webmasters having a free time the can design and upload the whole story which would have quite decent clarity for reading.

All the above damage (?) caused to HP7 by me is because of the pro HP7 Freaks unscrupulous and ignorant attitude towards P2P networking.

Their act if downing TF serves is unpardonable.

Their act is a crime and to retaliate a crime as security professional given the time frame the approach of mine which i felt was the quick one to convey a message back.

A website with text and pictures with End to End of the story in book should be a fascinating and a strong message.

Regarding cyber laws there are no issues.

any volunteers are welcome.

Hi! I from the UK, and My name is Ruzz. I would like to agree with SmarterBookGeek. I think that people have a lot to learn. We should probably have been patient and waited to see what would happen, rather than running along spoiling it for ourselves. Even if the leaking isn’t true, we still ruined the turnout of the overall impact!

I couldn’t read.

I suppose one reason people would take the trouble is the price. In the UK going on sale for £17.99. Thats quite alot for some people to afford.

Just Converted all the 700+ raster images to vector format.

I am now starting on the Elevation and mapping.will try to have the content the best possible on the Y axis.

I have also DONE the OCR using ABBY fine reader. Converted them as document files.

But quite a bit of spell check has to be done. I am happy with the quality but the spell check is the time consuming part.

So decided to go for the raster to vector process.

any way we have time and the whole digitized original images with us.

I feel we do it slowly but work on delivering the best quality possible.

great job.

If the publisher didn’t think of this as a publicity stunt, they should hire a new PR firm because this is great publicity. The author and publisher will literally make millions. Fans will buy the book anyway because a CD with a sharpie label on your bookshelf isn’t the same.
