If I use a public tracker, will it show on the site in question, or is it only if I upload it to the specific torrentsite, that I have to worry about it? The world might not be interested in vacation pictures, unless it’s very private pictures, in which case I wouldn’t want the rest of the world to see them :)

Well, if it’s person to person, http://yourip:openport/announce works great. Most clients have a built in tracker.

Martin, you’re right. But if the torrent has to “stay alive” if you shutdown your pc, the public trackers are the best option.

George, most sites have a “upload torrent” option. Just upload it there and it will show up

I have a question.

If you wish to have only your own tracker track the torrents, and have a regular hosting package, like on my http://itech.webwarp.net type, I wish to offer downloadable modified ISO CDs:

- How can I make sure that the torrents would not propagate through any other networks?

- How much bandwidth does the actual “tracking” take up? Any estimates?

Thanks Daimon, The same can be done with azureus. Enable the built in tracker in the options panel and choose “built in” tracker if you create the torrent.

But still, I would recommend to use an external tracker if you want the torrent to “stay alive”.

Create the torrent using the steps in the tutorial. Then seed it in your torrent client (on your pc)

Then you can copy the torrent you created and put it on your website or give it to anyone you like

What about webseeding?
I can`t belive that it`s still near impossible to do ,even after how long we have had bittorrent.
If you have a little howto for that it`d be great.
BTW.. I know blogtorrent says it can,but it doesn`t work for anyone with a router.

Please be gentle with me, i am very new to the whole computer generation. I have been downloading films through bittorrent, and i have a lot of good films on dvd that i would like to share. It’s only fair to give if you recieve, besides i don’t want to be blacklisted as someone who just sponges and then closes the client when they have what they want. Has anyone got any tips as to how i can make these films available through torrents!?

Hi Tony,

You can send it by e-mail. Or put it on a floppy and send it trough the “regular” mail ;) And if you have webspace you can put it on there.

Your friends can open the torrent with their torrent client.

I am quite new to torrenting, reading here about that sending torrents one on one, that is private torrents, I have this question. Would getting a (larger) file off my friend be more efficient and reliable etc., than transfering it via FTP? It seems to me that uTorrent does neat job of dividing files into 512 bytes pieces (and even encrypting them I think if you choose so) and it has great ability to resume (I crashed PC and had no problem getting back on my torrents progress). So if we set aside the sharing side of torrents, is it better than FTPing files?

I think there is not really much of a difference when you swap files 1on1.

But you’re right about the resume part. Most ftp clients have a resume option, but this sometimes fails to work.

I would always prefer torrents because they tend to be more stable and more efficient.

I dont understand. What’s the use of putting a torrent which you want to share one on one on a public tracker. Then im the only one which can seed the file, so a friend can only recieve when im online. So the torrent doesnt stay alive when im offline because im the only one seeding. Or does a public tracker saves some parts of the file :S.

no it doesn’t stay alive. But it’s the best and most stable way to share large files.

While it is possible to make you own bittorent client it is rather time consuming considering we have great free clients already out there like utorrent and azureus. there are so many clients one of them must fit your needs

hey i am trying to get my torrent going in Bit Comet, but when i create it, it wont upload at all, and in the tracker status it always says the tracker was deleted, i used all of the ones you have in your tutorial seperately, and still no luck! any help?

i thought i would add my two cent, i hope it helps someone out. first of all bittorrent is ment to be used throught the clients as its ment for sharing LARGE files that you cant normaly upload to a server “Webspace”!!! NOTE: trackers only track the torrents. what i mean is the tracker manages what parts of a file to send where and lots of other stats that are intresting ;) a tracker dose not store the files, it distrobutes them. think of a torrent like a empty glass and the tracker the tap and the water the data.
if you want to seed a file you can eather leave your comp on and wait for them to finnish downloading :( or seed from a webserver like with torrentflux or DehackEds. note php and mySQL are required on the server for this to work. and a little knolage about how to set them up is handy. also you must upload the torrent and the files/s you want to share to the server so you will need the webspace on your server to host your file/s. this is why there is a tracker so sharing

one more thing…..actually 2 more…can someone using a different torrent client dload the torredt from me if im using a bitcomet suppose….and the other person is using bitlord……and also……i have the torrent started and …i think 49 ppl have dloaded my torrent…but i can see only two ppl on my seed/peer for that torrent….will using multiple trackers make a difference

Thanks a lot for this tutorial, it’s very helpful. I just created my first torrent, and it’s nicely working.
One suggestion: it might be useful to add to the tutorial as a last step that one have to start the torrent in the client and to keep seeding til at least one other peer gets it.

I have a really, really beginner question. How to seed your own torrent simple tutorial
—————————————————————-

1. Create your own torrent
2. Upload the torrent to the one you used when you create your torrent (step 1)
3. Open your BT client and open the torrent you create in step 1, choose initial-seeding/start-seeding/force-seeding (read your BT client about first time seeding!)
4. Wait a few hours for your leecher(s) to come….
5. Leave your BT client open until at least TWO leechers finished downloading and become seeders.
6. Done….

nice. Don’t just rely on on site to publish your torrent. Try uploading to torrentbox, torrentspy, torrentz. They will mirror your torrent to all their affils.

I am using BitTorrent and I am stopped on the way to creat a torrent file…
The window for creating a torrent does not have any cases with “save” or “record” there is just one with “publish”. So I’ve pressed it but the file won’t finish to be bild. I don’t know what to do. The torrent is in the folder but 0 bits size… would you help me please ?

Hi guys,

I downloaded some moive files, and just put them initially into a staging area. After the downloads, I want to move them into folders so it is more organized. How do I do this if it is being shared in azureus in the staging area? Can I rename the files as well? (while i thank the efforts of the people, I would like to keep the file names simple like move title only, without Ripped By.. etc…)

Question: Does one “tracker” site spread your uploaded torrent to other sites, or should I attempt to blanket as many sites as possible?

Hi. I made a torrent and posted it several places, but it only shows up on torrentspy.com.Torrentbox says it won’t show it on the front page until I begin seeding it-but I am seeding it, it says “seeding” in my utorrent. I even went and also checked the box “initial seeding.”

This means that you did not enter the correct characters in the box at the bottom of the page where it says: “Enter code from image:” (The characters from the black rectangle just above this box)

These characters are case sensitive - pirate bay appears to use only upper case

Incidentally, I too was confused by this at first … “wrong code” sounds like it could mean “wrongly encoded file” … thinking it might have something to do with the torrent software I was using, I downloaded and installed a different engine with the result that I got to see the differences in features … based on this, I would advise others to compare software before deciding on the one they prefer …

Just to make sure I understand this; I’ve created 100’s of torrents via utorrent. I then go to my favorite tracker and “upload” the torrent. Now all I have to do is wait for ppl to search a tracker find my particular torrent and then they “download” the torrent in to their client (utorrent, azeurus, etc…) and then it starts the transfer correct?

I don’t need to do anything else right?

SB, bittorrent wasn’t made to do that and won’t do it efficiently at all. You’re better off using almost any other way to copy files one-on-one. Bittorrent was created for many-to-many copying: the world did not need another way to do one-to-one. Use ftp, or even email, it will be far, far faster.

Bittorrent as a seeder does not like (read:violently resists) giving sequential pieces to a single leecher. It will give you one small piece, then wait, look around for anyone else to give a piece to, wait, look some more, wait, then reluctantly, eventually, give you a second small piece. Rinse, repeat. It will take a month to transfer a single small file this way. And no, you can’t change that. This is absolutely the wrong tool for the job.

Thanx kluelos for explaining. I wish I could setup http/ftp server on my office computer, but it’s behind the office router, which I have no access to. I used to use Grouper, but it’s now unavailable. So I’m trying this torrent method. Surprisingly, it’s actually going ok (I think).

For 3 folders at work (2gig, 2gig & 6gig), I created 3 torrents and ran them on my home computer. They didn’t start download right away, but eventually they did. Each are going at around 20-25kB/s. Along with other small downloads, it’s 70+kB/s on my home computer, which is not bad for my slow DSL… :)

Hello,
I use Azureus to create my torrents and upload them onto Demonoid.
How do I post a link to my torrents on other sites.
I cannot seem to find an exact address for my torrent it just says http://inferno.demonoid.com:3394/announce but does not actually link to my torrent it just goes to their torrent list.
If I don’t make much sense it is because I don’t know what I am doing.
I would like more people to have access to my uploads.
Any help would be useful

The URL you are looking for is the entry on demonoid that displays some basic statistics about your torrent. Search for it by name and link to the page the comes up in the search results (NOT the search results themself).

I created the .torrent file via Utorrent (sorry to be repitive) - then loaded the .torrent file into my client.

It says downloading with no sseds and 1 leech (me?)

Does the .torrent file have to be in the folder with the actual data? Do i have to have the finished data in my completed or incoming folder?

You are giving them the tracker address….

What you really need to do is to give them the link address of the website directly.
and because it is hosted by demonoid, you need to get them to register on demonoid since it is “registered members only” download.

I really, really don’t what I’m doing with these Torrent things. I’ve been reading so many explanations and articles and whatever but I’m still lost. I’ve downloaded a Torrent client (I think that’s what they’re called) and now I’m trying to download something.

So I pressed the ‘Download Torrent’ and it showed up on the screen of the Torrent client, saying it was downloading, only it wasn;t actually. It just won;t do anything, The little symbol next to the names of the thing I’m downloading has turned brown and it says that nothing has been been downloaded.

Help!

But The thing keeps picking up people, sending them just a little bit of the file and then droping their IP. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi

Thanks a lot for the tutorial, it was very helpful.

However I seem to be having a small problem.

I can create the torrent no probs, but when I have uploaded it to a site and have my torrent client up and running (with the torrent set to Initial-Seeding) the site says there are no seeds for the file.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

ya…. I created a torrent……and went through all the steps…….. but anybody who downloads it….. it doen’t download kbs for any of them

howdy, i see lots of torrents on IsoHunt and btjunkie w/ tracker http://tracker.prq.to/announce but often can’t find that torrent on a specific website (to read the uploader’s comments or description) …. when you create/open a torrent using this tracker, but don’t upload the torrent to any website, does it appear on IsoHunt and btjunkie? if so, then it can “stay alive” without upping to a website. that also destroys the privateness (lol is that a word?) of your torrent if you wish to share it privately. am i wrong here? peace

I have translated lots of books and manuals; have created and changed some sources applications (GNU). To share I will have to create a torrent one by one or there is a way to automate the process. Like telling some program the directories with files and say how many torrents to create and what file/dir goes into each one?

if i include say a zillion ( more than 5 say…)trackers from various sources in my torrent , will it help in making more people see it faster ?

one thing not answered here

can you upload stuff if your behind a ASDL 8mb connection? as the ip would keep changing when pc is reboot or isp cycles ips or has some clich… dont the torrent have to embedded your IP and where thre file is locacted on your pc in the .torrent file so people can connect… even if you work out the ports and what not

also limitation of upload of 128kb makes it not so useful for world wide sharing, maybe friends on same day if ip dont change?

correct?

is there anyone out there that can help share files world wide instead those with t3?

I have a similiar feeling for making my own torrent. BUT:

As I am still very green on this I was wondering , If any one knew how to select a folder when using Demonoid. It says when making a torrent, to “select file”. As I am using VOB and TS files, I would like to select them all, BUT it will only let me select one of the TS files, not the WHOLE folder.

What should I do?

Anyways, once again, I would like to select the WHOLE folder, while using Demonoid. to make a torent, not one file. How could I “select all”. I also use my mouse to drag, and yes, CTRL, SHIFT and still no avail.

HELP PLEASE!!!

Hi Vince, that tracker doesn’t work anymore. Try one of the trackers listed here http://www.mininova.org/upload

Also, you need to upload the torrent to these sites by yourself after you created it (if you want to share it with the rest of the world).

I made some torrents in my uTorrent client, put them in Torrentbox for seeding, then started them seeding in uTorrent. They sat there for a long time, doing nothing, so I went into Torrentbox and downloaded them to myself. This might be coincidence but, immediately after I had done that, they started seeding.

Hi I have been trying to help a friend of mine who has set up an indie label in sheffield and wants to promote the bands on the label by uploading their debut album onto torrent sites, as a free album sampler! to get it passed round the net and help promote the bands on there! I have made a site, I know how to create & seed torrents…but what I want to do is use a private tracker.
How do I make one? do I just add the site..for example:

It will be a private site needing registration similar to demonoid & I know demonoid uses it’s own tracker so I just want to do the same… is it possible & how to do it. Thanks

I just created my first torrent and have no seed even after opening it up in both Bit and utorrent. I configured my router for port forwarding and made sure all the settings are ok for both programs. I even emailed a friend with the torrent and still no joy. What can i do next. I really want to share this torrent as none are available on the net.

hi there, well I need a software call Matlab for my mac OX is hard to find even in the net..A friend told me to downloaded from the torrent but I didnt knew how it works, so he came to my house and we try, in the end we couldnt coz he is not familiar with macs.. and other person told me to put in my hd tomato torrent, I did but is so hard to understand so I erase it from my hd, now I find a program call transmission and is easy to used, but I dont know how to configure the speed.
And the limited total bandwidth it should be higher in the upload rate or the download rate?

Question.

Let’s assume others are seeding my torrent already. If I stop seeding, no one will be able to download the torrent file? Or is it acceptable to stop seeding after a while (when plenty of other people are seeding for you)?

Problem: I am using utorrent 1.7.5 and i opened the torrent file - add - torrent with my utorrent but no seed apperas. I few people are interested to download but it is almost 2 days now and the files do not download at all. ONe of the files is only 34.5kb. How do I seed these? I also tried file - make new torrent and ticked start seeding.. nothing. I used http://vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce.

I’ve just created a torrent “The Living Dead Girl (1982)” and saved the tracker name “Lil NudistGirl ~ The Living Dead Girl (Spanish) (WS) (1982)” but I can’t find it on any torrent wensite. I’ve saved some of the torrent tracked you’ve suggested. One of them was ‘thepiratebay’ and I’ve search the site for my torrent but can’t find it. Why is it not there. I did not click “make private” or whatever just in case you were wondering. I’ve checked the general tab in uTorrent and it looks like it’s working. But can’t find my torrent. Any suggestions?

For your own site I reccomend you host your site in sweden and use google.

Those sites are difficult to build. I suggest using an existing one. The Pirate Bay has always worked the best for me, try that one.

i created the torrent and i went to Torrent Box and i uploade it..i use Azures and after i used the wizard i click on open to seed and the azures seed it and on the site for torrent box i can see my torrent but..beside my torrent on the site i found seeds (0) why? it’s seeded already on my azures so wht is my problem here?? thanx

1.Go to your Torrent Box
2.Find your torrent(it`s dead)
3.Download torrent file from it
4.Open Azureus
5.Add downloaded torrent and browse to it on your hard disk…

Mark, uploading a torrent is basically creating your own torrent, with files that werent on the tracker before, and uploading that to share with others. its similar to downloading and them uploading, but not quite the same since you are downloading something thats put on the tracker by someone else.

I use a Laptop and only DL from public access locations. Since I don’t have Internet access at home, I can’t really seed but I would still like to give to the community. Is there a site that I can upload to that permits *any* software / video type? The only sites I’ve found that will let me upload to create a web-based torrent have rules regarding copyright items and I don’t want to get banned for providing protected items. Any site recommendations would be helpful, thanks.

Request a website owner to remove the torrent. In such case you should have not uploaded the .torrent file but rather send it via email to that person. Once he (they) finishes download noone else will dl your files.

Note a difference between .torrent file which may be uploaded e.g. to mininova, piratebay or may be sent via email or put on your website. The latter is private manner.

i have the same problem. I’ve used utorrent and azureus with the same result: a .torrent that i can send but there are no connections on the other end 0(1)

Well the thing is, Ads pay $

So I want to be like all other free torrent tracker websites… making the huge dollars from ads…

But first, I need to know how to actually ‘track’ a torrent for people to come to my website…

I have my own server… and am skilled in HTML, Java (?) and a few other website programming languages…

It would be dandy if someone could fill me in… on how to write a tracking script into my website…

Also im aware that this type of thing is probably illegal for sharing copyrighted data… but that is not my goal.

Hey there all,

I managed to upload a torrent (YAY), it’s doing fine and rather happily seeding mininova right now. I also uploaded it to seedpeer, and it’ll show up with 2 seeds (not true!) and 6 peers, but when I click on the actual file to get to the download link and more information, its saying 0 seeds, 0 peers…. I’m using uTorrent, and everytime I try to d’load the torrent like sven said in 138 above to get rid of the “dead torrent”, I’m adding the trackers, but it’s not updating on seedpeer… Should I be worried about that since it seems to be updating their main page, but not the individual link?

I also gave up on the Initial Seeding option - I’d started off with that checked and *nothing* was being uploaded - I had about between 4 and 7 peers at any that time, and I think they gave up on me! So yes, I’m going to have to sit here with it available for longer on my comp, but it’s time I gave back to the community, eh? (^_~)

What are torrents for? I have downloaded a lot and I understand most of how to use them but the one thing I don’t understand is why do you use another website as a torrent? well its sound easy how you have described to upload the torrent to a tracker (no offend).
but i have been trying for the past two weeks without any success to upload my torrent.
as soon as i try to upload there is an error comes up on the bit torrent.

cannot enter web addresses as “file to add”
