How to create a torrent?
Torrents are great, they are the best way to share large files with your friends, or even with people you don’t know at all. But surprisingly enough, not many people create torrents when they need to share something. I have “a lot of” friends who know how to download torrents, but when they need to send me their latest 200MB vacation picture collection, they ask me to “get on msn”.
It’s not that I have anything against msn (allthough the file transfer sucks), but why don’t just use BitTorrent? Especially if you want to send something to more than one person, or if you want to share high quality HDTV files, because then you can share the bandwidth.
So how do you do this? Well it’s very simple. Open your favorite BitTorrent client and do the magic trick:
file > create torrent
That’s all? Well almost. All you need to do now is put in the tracker info nad tick some boxes. This can differ somewhat from client to client but it all comes down to the same thing.
uTorrent
1. File > Create new Torrent (or CTRL + N)
2. Select the files and or directories
3. Trackers: This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers. You can use one or more trackers, but in general one is enough.
Here are some good trackers you can use:
http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce
http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
http://www.sumotracker.com/announce
Put one of these in the tracker box
4. Do NOT tick the private torrent box (unless you’re using a private tracker)
5. Save the torrent and send it to your friends
1. File > Create Torrent (or CTRL + M)
2. Select the files and or directories
3. Select “enable public DHT network” from the dropdown box
This way you can be your own tracker if the public tracker goes down.
4. Tracker server and DHT node list
Again, This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers. You can use one or more trackers, but in general one is enough.
Here are some of the most popular trackers at the moment:
http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce
http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
udp://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
http://www.sumotracker.com/announce
Put one of these in the tracker box
5. Save the torrent and send it to your friends
1. File > New Torrent (or CTRL + N)
2. Tick “use an external tracker”.
And again, This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the popular public trackers.
Here are some of the most popular trackers at the moment:
http://tracker.prq.to/announce
http://inferno.demonoid.com:3389/announce
http://tracker.bt-chat.com/announce
http://tracker.zerotracker.com:2710/announce
Put one of these in the tracker box
3. Select single file or dicectory, click NEXT and point to the file or directory you want to share, and click NEXT
4. Do NOT tick “private torrent”
5. Do tick “allow decentralized tracking”
6. Save the torrent and send it to your friends
Happy sharing. Note that you don’t need to upload the torrent to a website or a tracker. This means you control who gets the file and who doesn’t, and it won’t be visible to others!.

I dont understand. What’s the use of putting a torrent which you want to share one on one on a public tracker. Then im the only one which can seed the file, so a friend can only recieve when im online. So the torrent doesnt stay alive when im offline because im the only one seeding. Or does a public tracker saves some parts of the file :S.
no it doesn’t stay alive. But it’s the best and most stable way to share large files.
Hello…
thanks for you tutorial…
i just can’t seem to get it to work! :-(
every time i try it out i get a timeout from the tracker.
I am using ABC yet an other bittorrent… can you help me?
hi there….
i was wondering if i can make a bittorrent client by my own
I’m so stupid
While it is possible to make you own bittorent client it is rather time consuming considering we have great free clients already out there like utorrent and azureus. there are so many clients one of them must fit your needs
Hi, I just wanted how do I put this on my own site. I have the file and I create the torrent them what? Do I keep the file on my own site or my computer to seed. I’m not sure what to do? Please email me with newbie instructions.
hey i wanted to thank u i thought i was just plain stupid until i read this and i changed my traker url.
XD thanks it is much apreciated
can i put more than one tracker in a torrent
yes you can
hey i am trying to get my torrent going in Bit Comet, but when i create it, it wont upload at all, and in the tracker status it always says the tracker was deleted, i used all of the ones you have in your tutorial seperately, and still no luck! any help?
i thought i would add my two cent, i hope it helps someone out. first of all bittorrent is ment to be used throught the clients as its ment for sharing LARGE files that you cant normaly upload to a server “Webspace”!!! NOTE: trackers only track the torrents. what i mean is the tracker manages what parts of a file to send where and lots of other stats that are intresting ;) a tracker dose not store the files, it distrobutes them. think of a torrent like a empty glass and the tracker the tap and the water the data.
if you want to seed a file you can eather leave your comp on and wait for them to finnish downloading :( or seed from a webserver like with torrentflux or DehackEds. note php and mySQL are required on the server for this to work. and a little knolage about how to set them up is handy. also you must upload the torrent and the files/s you want to share to the server so you will need the webspace on your server to host your file/s. this is why there is a tracker so sharing
Thank you for the tutorial,
I’ve created a torrent on BitComet, only my problem is that it resets to zero and tries to download the file instead of upload!
I’ve set the directory to the files I want to share and they have the same file and folder names.. but they wont upload..
i am a newbie and like a lot of other ppl ive been “sponging” shall we call it, a lot…i want to upload a few live concerts ….ive made the torrent thing as per your instructions using bitcomet….ive uploaded it on a particular tracker website….now do i have to be online on bitcomet when i want ppl to take it or do i just have to be online?…..the torrent is listed in the downloads section and is paused as of now….please tell me what to do
you have to be online
bitcomet has to be online
you should start the torrent
thank a lot buddy….
one more thing…..actually 2 more…can someone using a different torrent client dload the torredt from me if im using a bitcomet suppose….and the other person is using bitlord……and also……i have the torrent started and …i think 49 ppl have dloaded my torrent…but i can see only two ppl on my seed/peer for that torrent….will using multiple trackers make a difference
no, it doesn’t make any difference.
and one tracker is enough
and you didnt answer the first question….what if we use different clients
I did answer Q1
“no, it doesn’t make any difference.”
ok sorry …..thank you….
Thanks a lot for this tutorial, it’s very helpful. I just created my first torrent, and it’s nicely working.
One suggestion: it might be useful to add to the tutorial as a last step that one have to start the torrent in the client and to keep seeding til at least one other peer gets it.
Cheers from .ro, and Macs rocks!
