I have more old modems in a box somewhere than you have underwear. Followed by many, many, USR modems, you know, where I used to work back in the 80s. BBS systems were primarily end user to end point. I don’t remember any of them being interconnected. You also made my point for me. It may have begun, with banks of modems in a closet somewhere, but ARPNET launched it into the mainstream. Do you think that is some company, say 3com, or IBM had brought packet switching networks to the world that they would have given it away? No way in hell. By giving it away, the things went a lot faster.

From time to time it got raided so if you went in there just of a drink you might run the risk of ending up in a fight, have your wallet stolen, or being turned over by the cops.

The management of the bar made some half assed attempts to clear out the lowlifes, but eventually the local council revoked the liquor license.

Damn that was a convenient bar and now I have to go half a mile away because of that damn council.
