One day, they might just realise that if the movie house itself offers ultra-high-speed download for its films (at cost, mind you) using a protected datatype, piracy at this scale would be destroyed.

EFF Updates

    * EU Action Alert: Urge Your MEP to Take a Stand for the Internet
Written Declaration 12 asks EU negotiators to ensure that ACTA
respects European citizens’ fundamental rights to freedom of
expression and privacy – and opposes provisions that would encourage
Internet intermediaries to engage in surveillance or filtering of all
Internet users’ communications for potential copyright-infringing
material. If 369 members of the European Parliament sign this
declaration before July 8, it will become the official opinion of the
European Parliament and send a strong message to the EU ACTA
negotiators. Approximagely 253 MEPs have signed so far, but 116 MEP
signatures are still needed – particularly from MEPs in Germany,
    the U.K., Italy and Poland.

Make a film, put onto a torrent site and then sue everyone who downloads it! It's a great way to make money. The film doesn't even have to be particularly good. Surely there is something illegal about all of this? I don't mean the filesharers!!

Hey 48, Life is "not" FAIR! If your a movie producer and have a difficult time understanding digital media business models or economics then you should "not" be in the business. Everyone else in this life has to be creative in order to make revenue; why can't you? Because you want it to be handed over to you on a silver platter no questions asked. So who's the pirate? BTW, it's file-sharing not stealing!

If any of these cases ever go to court, I hope the defendant’s lawyer makes the point that by not even attempting to get the torrents taken down, they’re giving their approval for people to download it.

This is the pinnacle of terrible logic. So unless you are standing guard at your door the whole day, you are giving people the approval to rob you?

They have the rights to it. It is theirs. They shouldn't have to track down every place where they're work is being handed out like candy. They should have had their work up for download to begin with.

"As an independent film distributor trying to make new models of online film distribution work,"

We should have a national and even international discussion about this but unfortunately since the big corporation of parasites who do not care about the little guys decided to behave like terrorists making any discussion and the establishment of sound policy impossible.

You see for the law to work we need a consensus. People pay for their good at the store not so much because they have to but because they want to. Nothing prevent anyone to go into a store and jack anything they want and pull a gun if anyone bother them. Nothing.

They don't do it though because anyone know that if they do this the store will disappear.

The problem is that we can not afford to have corporations of parasites rulling our societies therefore we want them to disappear.

As an independent film distributor trying to make new models of online film distribution work, all I can say is that anybody who enjoys 'sticking it to the man' by downloading The Hurt Locker relinquishes their right to complain when the only movies to download are lame studio or direct to video movies. It's the little guys making meaningful movies that die first.

I doubt allowing people to pirate your movie and then suing them after the fact would be more appealing than legal transactions. How about all the time and money it takes to handle thousands of lawsuits? You aren't even guaranteed that everyone will pay up. Legal technicalities still obstruct what should be very straightforward cases and often serve to exonerate those who have no regard for the law.

RE "makers do not seem to be sending takedown notices to torrent sites":

Shouldn't knowing about specific torrent sites and torrent links and NOT sending takedown notices compromise, dilute, weaken them? I'm thinking about the trademark dilution analogy. In order to maintain and protect rights in a trademark, you have to defend it against know infringers (i.e., send notices, etc.).

I Downloaded a movie just by defiance as soon as I learn of the lawsuit.

I did not watch it but browsed it. I don't think I like it. However I am keeping the copy to reseed it later and entrap some lawyers. I am looking for preys.

"Nearly every torrent site will remove a torrent file if the copyright holder complains"

That's not really true at all, it might be more like 50% but to say 'nearly every torrent site' is just poor journalism. Exactly what I've come to expect from the sensationalism propaganda from TF.

What a good way to get some profit eh?

You make sure trackers are distributing, then exploit ignorant people with scary letters, asking for their money.

You are pitiful.

Bad movies need alternative revenue sources =)

In any case, any lawsuit can pretty much be won as long as you own original content. I usually rent instead of downloading (when it comes to movies) but rent prices aren't so cheap (not in US, no netflix or so) and I've lost count of how many times I had to exchange the movie because the media was damaged due to poor handling from previous customers...

Yea, downloading is faster, easier and better. MAYBE MAFIAA could offer digital download for a monthly fee? I would probably pay for that. Want ungodly quality? Extra few cents and its yours ;) [/dream]

@26

I'm not after "free" content, I want to make sure that any money I spend goes to the right people: the artist.

If there comes a new legal bittorrent service that is of a high quality, similar to the many amazing private trackers there are out there, where music is sold fairly, where the artists get a fair portition of their money and we pay a fair fee to them and get a high quailty, DRM free file,
I'd more than want to jump on board.

The media industry need to stop being bullies: their purpose should be there to help new and young emerging talents get discovered, but they seem more interested in spending millions remarketing their already high-profile, well known media money makers, and taking more than their fair share out of their smaller artists.
