Actually no, a sale to a commercial pirate site does not mean a lost sale to the legitimate vendors, as there is no guarantee that those receiving the pirate copies would have bought it legitimately in the first place.

Torrentfreak reported that a Spanish judge recently ruled that no compensation could be awarded for copyright infringement for exactly this reason.

Can't really see why anyone cares that people who are making *profit* off piracy are being targeted. It's just like when you used to buy pirate videos off that guy with the case in the street. I've still not quite got over the copy of Bambi I got for my mother this way. Awful quality.

Still, the idea of sharing is lovely, the idea of making your living off the back of others work is criminal. People who are into the concepts of less punishment for casual sharers and less insane media rights for consumers should, if not welcome this kind of news, then at least not decry it.

A sale to a illegal movie site for instance is a clear indicator that the producing company has actually lost a sale, unlike piracy where the lost sale q is much more difficult to answer.

As for all this chatter about courts and legal rights for the sites involved, if paypal etc stop accepting your business, then how is that a courts concern? They are still a private company right? If they suspend an existing account and you've broken no rules, then you can appeal and look into legal matters yourself if you're within your rights. No private company has to business with anyone they don't want to.

I know shit loads of wrong sites get targeted for various reasons, but surely looking at a site which asks for cash for music etc they don't own is pretty easy in the detection stakes.

If you ask for money for things that aren't yours, how on earth can you be shocked when the police get involved?! Can't say I have any sympathy what so ever. Just be glad the police are involved as the middle man and its not just the media companies giving orders to the payment companies. At least the police are held to some kind of public accountability.
