I must say that all of this is becoming uninteresting. I mean, iPod was cool. iPhone they managed to make a beg event out of.
But this? iPad? The reaction is like: “Oh, another revolutionary device, yawn”.

I think it is obvious to even regular people that these kind of products get useful only after they are hacked. I think the reason most people do not care about the problems of free and non-free software is because they used hacked and “pirated” software anyway.

Me, after having switched to GNU/Linux, I noticed all the proprietary situation seems even more weird than before. The notion that someone gives you a closed box is so unnatural.

There is some arrogance in that, so it seems – like, we will now make you happy, we will give you what you want – iPad! Wow. They think they know what we want. But they don’t. They know what will sell. Feel the difference.

Apple put a proprietary processor in its iTampon…er…iPod. This means that it would be impossible to hack, and Apple only wants you to run software that they can profit from, not what you want to run possibly including illegal software. The proprietary chip will make it unattractive to bother hacking because not only will it be difficult for the average hacker, but also very expensive making it hardly worth it when you can do whatever you want with a netbook.

Alas, I’m sure eventually someone will find some weakness in the OS/Apps where it might be possible to softmod the system, but of course the iPad will be patched regularly to remove any mods. The CPU is hard coded so I think it would make hacking it practically impossible.

I suppose if you had the financial and technical resources to completely replace the proprietary processor you can do it. Of course thanks to DMCA you can’t do it legally, and it would cost hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of dollars to develop such a chip. Why bother? Stick with an iPod Touch and Netbook. They cost about the same as a top of the line iPad but at least you can do whatever you want with them.
