I disagree here.The record industry collapsed because:
1)thier antiquated business model
is no longer viable. 2)99% of everything they put out is shit and then they try and cram even more of it down your throat as a whole album at outrageously high prices.
3.) Thier NEGATIVE PR really destroyed them here.A business that alienates it own customers usually fails. 4.)They forcefeed us what THEY think should be popular culture. Many successful indy labels GIVE music away and still succeed. 5.)With the cost of living and college expenses,thier main target audience simply doesnt have the money these days.Plain and simple. I close with this: An mp3 is nothing more than a sample just like tapes and radio was in the old days. why a sample? If you know how mp3 compression works,your question has been answered. A Simple spectral analysis of the waveform proves this out.

Of course. Because passion and commitment don’t stop the landlord kicking you out if you don’t pay the rent. Perhaps you’re a spoilt, rich brat who has Daddy pay for all of that, but for the rest of us it’s kinda hard to develop software if you’re living on the streets. Those of us who do real work for a living, as opposed to anonymously trolling piracy forums, actually need to pay bills and rent.

If you want to call it stealing because I’m using your work without having paid you for it, then doing something like buying a second hand Metallica CD from the used bin at a music shop is stealing, too, because you’d be listening to it without having paid Metallica.

The problem with the App Store is that Apple doesn’t offer any kind of try-before-you-buy feature(like they do with previewing music in the iTunes store), and it’s too easy for people to game the search engine. Those are two of the biggest reasons why any scene at all exists around cracking such cheap apps.

Why don’t you spend the time and effort you put into pirating someone else’s software into CREATING something yourself?

I never saw a pirate giving away what they do for nothing and they live with their head in an uncomfortable and odorous place between their legs. But don’t let them get to you. Their sense of entitlement will wear those around them down. Keep writing the apps while you can afford to, if not, then thanks for trying.

Back when you had to actually put some effort into hacking your iPhone to accept cracked apps, and seek out pirated apps from non-obvious locations, the activity was kept underground and relatively unharmful to the revenue of small developers.

But making a GUI app that any idiot can run, that makes downloading pirated apps easier than buying from the real store, is causing serious damage to independent developers.

Some of these devs have barely covered the cost of their iPhone + subscription + hours not working at their day job.

Pirates: with great power, comes great responsibility. Making GUI apps for the newbs is not wielding that power responsibly.

Me, I have nothing against freeware and open source software; in fact I’ve given away my fair share of both over the years. But if I did that with *everything*, then I would be broke, and then I wouldn’t be able to write more software, and that wouldn’t be good for anyone.

Same goes for usability, although you probably haven’t heard of that. Linux is a geek toy; the only Linux users who aren’t geeks needed a geek to set it up. There’s nothing wrong with geeks, except that most people aren’t geeks. And the thing about a weak minority is that it eventually dies out. You may be able to feed yourself for now, but in a world without proprietary software, the chance of software developers continuing to exist outside of tiny minorities is infinitesimally small. And as a result, television will suffer. (That news bulletin? Final Cut Pro.) Paper will suffer. (Every commercial print in the last half decade or so? Adobe InDesign.) Even domestic appliances will suffer. (Guess who wrote the software that runs your toaster? Or washing machine? Or oven?) And you’ll have to walk everywhere because there’s software in all forms of transport these days. Money has existed for thousands and thousands of years. No movement is gonna make trade without money go mainstream. None.

And your assertion that proprietary apps are uninspired? I’m open to any suggestions of an “inspired” open source app. (And not one that started out proprietary. Then the inspiration isn’t open source, is it?) But please don’t be such an asshole as you have been so far.

Apparently you don’t understand that freeware and open source software does NOT mean copying and redistributing copywritten applications.

Developers have the option to distribute applications as freeware, and according to open source policies, but they are not obligated to do so. To copy a an application and distribute it for free is stealing (despite your simplistic attempt to argue otherwise).

The developer who posted their app on the App Store only granted a license to the purchaser, and in no way granted a license to allow redistribution of the application at random. They have not identified the app as Freeware.

I think you need to look up ‘stealing’ in a dictionary, because it obviously doesn’t mean what you think it means.

But unfortunately, the reality that copying something and thieving something are two very different things gets in the way of your little fib.

I.e, to steal is to take Thing A away from Person A and gives it to Person B. To fileshare is to duplicate Thing A so that now there’s two of them, hence Person B can have Thing A without taking it away from Person A.

RS is like MEGA – I don’t see any difference. Someone crack the soft/rip the movie then upload it to RS but downloader in most cases need to pay (eventually not pay if it’s enough calm being;)
