It's hilarious to read all the losers who steal justify what they do. Not paying Nabisco? Man, of all the lame arguments for stealing, that takes the, er, cake.

If you want to live in a socialist paradise where you don't have to pay for things because people do their work out of the goodness of their hearts - and not because a mortgage and food and tuition for the kids costs real money - then you have no idea how you are undermining your own freaking future.

I am a little concerned about this. This obviously mean it is going to affect the Application Developers who want to sell their Apps. How many developers who want to sell their Apps will be spending sleepless nights developing quality apps if they be taken and downloaded for Free? This worrying as it will only affect the Application market. If you want a free App come over to http://www.WhichWebsite.com and I will give you a PROMO CODE FREE!

"MP3s are just a clever way of stealing people's songs / which is why the record industry's collapsed."

I disagree here.The record industry collapsed because:
1)thier antiquated business model
is no longer viable. 2)99% of everything they put out is shit and then they try and cram even more of it down your throat as a whole album at outrageously high prices.
3.) Thier NEGATIVE PR really destroyed them here.A business that alienates it own customers usually fails. 4.)They forcefeed us what THEY think should be popular culture. Many successful indy labels GIVE music away and still succeed. 5.)With the cost of living and college expenses,thier main target audience simply doesnt have the money these days.Plain and simple. I could go on but I wont.

I close with this: An mp3 is nothing more than a sample just like tapes and radio was in the old days. why a sample? If you know how mp3 compression works,your question has been answered. A Simple spectral analysis of the waveform proves this out.

As for the iPhone,meh.No comment.It will be dead and gone in 5 years or less.

"So what are your apps?

Usually, this is where who ever is claiming “you filesharers rip off my stuff!!” comes back with a weak excuse refusing to name their work."

"So unlike those passionless cynicists who are only in the software business to turn a buck, your passion and commitment to writing apps is so great that you’d consider leaving the software business if you failed to turn a buck?

God damn."

Of course. Because passion and commitment don't stop the landlord kicking you out if you don't pay the rent. Perhaps you're a spoilt, rich brat who has Daddy pay for all of that, but for the rest of us it's kinda hard to develop software if you're living on the streets. Those of us who do real work for a living, as opposed to anonymously trolling piracy forums, actually need to pay bills and rent.

The funny thing is Appulo.US is now hacked back and some of their posted apps have a name replacing their app version. The other reason appulo.us hacked that other dirt bags site is because they where crying about their own servers being down at the time. They both steal apps so how are they going to act like internet police? WEAK! I guess they are getting what they deserve right back, right now. HA! Let the app nerd wars begin.

To all the weasels here who think that stealing other peoples apps, music, movies, or whatever is ok under some sort of idiotic rationalization...

I just hope I have the luck to meet you in line someday (assuming that is that you even leave your parents house or move your fat ass more than the 4 feet from the TV to the fridge) so I can drag you out into the parking lot and beat you senseless... oh wait, too late for that.. ok just a good ass kicking... and guess what .. no charge
Thats all... can't wait

@John S
"Apparently you don’t understand that freeware and open source software does NOT mean copying and redistributing copywritten applications."

Ahahah, no.

Awolf was trying to make a threat that if people continue to download cracked iPhone apps, then developers will stop making software for it and we'll be forced to write our own.

Which is no threat at all, given the existence of freeware and the open source community. We're already used to writing our own software, so that bogeyman isn't going to work.

Apparently you need to work on your reading comprehension.

@"Let's see how long I can make my name / before Torrent Freak explodes"
"I can see that this is a lost cause, but I will still try to respond to your claims that open source will work if proprietary disappears."

Hmm...

You know, it might be really tough for me to defend my claims that open source will work if proprietary dissapears. Since I didn't make any.

They're the products of <i>your</i> imagination, so <i>you</i> deal with them. Leave me out of it. :(

@"Let's see how long I can make my name / before Torrent Freak explodes"
"And your assertion that proprietary apps are uninspired?"

Is also imaginary.

Tell me, is there something in the water today? Have you and John S been smoking from the same crackpipe?

@splan
"No, but those of us with passion and commitment, but who are also old enough to have bills to pay — such as rent because we don’t live in our parents basements — might leave the software business."

So unlike those passionless cynicists who are only in the software business to turn a buck, your passion and commitment to writing apps is so great that you'd consider leaving the software business if you failed to turn a buck?

God damn.

Some of the most inept comments I've ever read, all in a row. I thought I woke up today, but this must be some kind of bad dream. Or a joke. Hey, am I on Canded Camera?

@splan
"“But then where would we get all our mediocre, uninspired programs from!?”

Mega, apparently."

You're calling commercial iPhone apps mediocre and uninspired? That's what Mega deals in, so yes, you definitely are calling them mediocre and uninspired.

I'm guessing that was unintended?

Well, then let this be a lesson for all the kids out there. Literacy is important. Learn to read, or you'll just end up like splan here.

@splan
"Great! So… you don’t need to be here, right? You were just leaving? I mean, freeware and open-source software provide all your awesome software needs, so you don’t need to rip off commercial software, right"

Hey... Come here. Closer. I want to tell you a secret.

Are you listening? Good. <i>Bit Torrent is for more than just downloading software!</i> I know, I was shocked at first, too. But you can download music, and TV shows, and movies! Hell, you can even download whole books!

Yeah, it's amazing. But don't tell anybody this closely gaurded secret. I don't want it getting out.

@"Let's see how long I can make my name / before Torrent Freak explodes"
"I also just realised that my argument is so badly written that it doesn’t hold up for more than half an hour of Internet-standard scrutiny, so please ignore it to avoid wasting anyone’s time and listen to splan’s more coherent comment."

Aww, come on, don't beat yourself up. Splan's comment doesn't stand up to scrutiny either :D

@awolf
"Two thirds of my apps are free on the App Store"

So what are your apps?

Usually, this is where who ever is claiming "you filesharers rip off my stuff!!" comes back with a weak excuse refusing to name their work.

@awolf
"What are you even talking about? Are you saying that because open source software exists in the world people are entitled to copy paid software at their discretion? Is it another person’s choice if my software is “open source” or not?"

Because freeware and open source software exists in the world, your little threat that commercial iPhone app writers might pack up their toys and go home in a tizzy and we'd all have to write our own software from now on is absolutely laughable. You said that someday we might end up having to "feed" ourselves, but we've already been "feeding" ourselves for ages. I was very clear the first time I said this. And I was clear the second time at the top of this comment. But I'll say it yet a third, because you seem to have trouble understanding it.

@awolf
"What about the money that would result from my work? I’m no longer in possession of that money. It seems like it has been “taken” away."

You were <i>never</i> in possession of that money. I didn't magically give you $1.99 and then make it leap out of your pocket the moment I decided to download a cracked version of your app. You can't have something taken away from you when you never possessed it in the first place.

If you want to call it stealing because I'm using your work without having paid you for it, then doing something like buying a second hand Metallica CD from the used bin at a music shop is stealing, too, because you'd be listening to it without having paid Metallica.

@afraid but hopeful
"I wish viruses on all of you. And you’ll get them."

Sorry, don't use Windows anymore(<i>I'm freeeeeee!!</i>).

@afraid but hopeful
"The truth is that the app store provides the promise of cheap apps and small developers developing them for YOU not the company you work for (if it is a big one.)"

The problem with the App Store is that Apple doesn't offer any kind of try-before-you-buy feature(like they do with previewing music in the iTunes store), and it's too easy for people to game the search engine. Those are two of the biggest reasons why any scene at all exists around cracking such cheap apps.

@ophiochos
"They hide behind the fact that the word ’stealing’ was not invented for this purpose and don’t bother to read the more subtle definition that says ‘depriving the owner of the benefits of something’. "

Yes. The more subtle, lunatic definition of stealing that says it's theft every time you share some Oreos with somebody and they fail to pay Nabisco.

You're of sound mind, clearly.

And you're right. We <i>are</i> hiding behind the fact that the word 'stealing' wasn't invented for the purpose of referring to filesharing. Just like the word 'cat' wasn't invented to refer to dogs.

Such insight!

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Why don't you spend the time and effort you put into pirating someone else's software into CREATING something yourself?

To the developers here -- some of us pay for our apps, all of them. If we can't afford it, we don't buy them. Some of us realise that 'everything for free' means 'everything of yours for free'. They hide behind the fact that the word 'stealing' was not invented for this purpose and don't bother to read the more subtle definition that says 'depriving the owner of the benefits of something'. And it doesn't matter what you say because they are so convinced they are entitled to stuff that they're not going to listen.

I never saw a pirate giving away what they do for nothing and they live with their head in an uncomfortable and odorous place between their legs. But don't let them get to you. Their sense of entitlement will wear those around them down. Keep writing the apps while you can afford to, if not, then thanks for trying.

The truth is that the app store provides the promise of cheap apps and small developers developing them for YOU not the company you work for (if it is a big one.)

But, like Gordon Gekko, you want to wreck it because it is wreckable.

And someday when international virus-writing conspirators use you to conduct their crimes, you'll think they're evil.

But I'm guessing you people who all expect software developers to be your digital slaves--you expect to be paid for your work.

Look, while everyone knows piracy goes on and has to accept it as a fact of life, it's very disappointing that talented developers put the effort into MAKING IT EASY for newbs to do.

Back when you had to actually put some effort into hacking your iPhone to accept cracked apps, and seek out pirated apps from non-obvious locations, the activity was kept underground and relatively unharmful to the revenue of small developers.

But making a GUI app that any idiot can run, that makes downloading pirated apps easier than buying from the real store, is causing serious damage to independent developers.

Some of these devs have barely covered the cost of their iPhone + subscription + hours not working at their day job.

Pirates: with great power, comes great responsibility. Making GUI apps for the newbs is not wielding that power responsibly.

"Oh no!! You mean that someday, passionless cynicists like you who only write apps for money might leave the software business!?"

Two thirds of my apps are free on the App Store.

"You’ve apperently never heard of freeware or the open source movement."

I have contributed greatly to multiple open source projects. But how is that relevant?

What are you even talking about? Are you saying that because open source software exists in the world people are entitled to copy paid software at their discretion? Is it another person's choice if my software is "open source" or not?

A man is entitled to charge for something he creates. And another man is entitled to steal from him. But don't act like that second man is some sort of liberator in the "open source movement"- he's just a parasite.

"To steal your work, I’d have to take it from you. But filesharing doesn’t involve taking. It involves copying, which severly fails as theft, because you still have your work after I’ve downloaded it."

What about the money that would result from my work? I'm no longer in possession of that money. It seems like it has been "taken" away.

I think I should clarify that I don't agree with my name, it's just a lyric that's been stuck in my head since I heard it on Saturday. I also just realised that my argument is so badly written that it doesn't hold up for more than half an hour of Internet-standard scrutiny, so please ignore it to avoid wasting anyone's time and listen to splan's more coherent comment.

"Oh no!! You mean that someday, passionless cynicists like you who only write apps for money might leave the software business!?"

No, but those of us with passion and commitment, but who are also old enough to have bills to pay -- such as rent because we don't live in our parents basements -- might leave the software business.

"But then where would we get all our mediocre, uninspired programs from!?"

Mega, apparently.

"You’ve apperently never heard of freeware or the open source movement. We’ve been feeding ourselves since long before the iPhone ever existed, and we’ll be feeding ourselves long after its demise."

Great! So... you don't need to be here, right? You were just leaving? I mean, freeware and open-source software provide all your awesome software needs, so you don't need to rip off commercial software, right? So all that warez you downloaded was just some crazy accident, there you were, typing www.fsf.org into your browser and your fingers slipped and torrentfreak.com came out instead?

Me, I have nothing against freeware and open source software; in fact I've given away my fair share of both over the years. But if I did that with *everything*, then I would be broke, and then I wouldn't be able to write more software, and that wouldn't be good for anyone.

There is a little message beneath the comment form saying "Please watch your language." Therefore it is with great deliberation that I say you are the biggest asshole I have ever seen. If that offends you, then I can offer some advice. Don't be such an asshole.

I can see that this is a lost cause, but I will still try to respond to your claims that open source will work if proprietary disappears. Open source games are practically non-existent. Same goes for usability, although you probably haven't heard of that. Linux is a geek toy; the only Linux users who aren't geeks needed a geek to set it up. There's nothing wrong with geeks, except that most people aren't geeks. And the thing about a weak minority is that it eventually dies out. You may be able to feed yourself for now, but in a world without proprietary software, the chance of software developers continuing to exist outside of tiny minorities is infinitesimally small. And as a result, television will suffer. (That news bulletin? Final Cut Pro.) Paper will suffer. (Every commercial print in the last half decade or so? Adobe InDesign.) Even domestic appliances will suffer. (Guess who wrote the software that runs your toaster? Or washing machine? Or oven?) And you'll have to walk everywhere because there's software in all forms of transport these days. Money has existed for thousands and thousands of years. No movement is gonna make trade without money go mainstream. None.

And your assertion that proprietary apps are uninspired? I'm open to any suggestions of an "inspired" open source app. (And not one that started out proprietary. Then the inspiration isn't open source, is it?) But please don't be such an asshole as you have been so far.

@Anonymous (daring name choice)

Apparently you don't understand that freeware and open source software does NOT mean copying and redistributing copywritten applications.

Developers have the option to distribute applications as freeware, and according to open source policies, but they are not obligated to do so. To copy a an application and distribute it for free is stealing (despite your simplistic attempt to argue otherwise).

The developer who posted their app on the App Store only granted a license to the purchaser, and in no way granted a license to allow redistribution of the application at random. They have not identified the app as Freeware.

@Gargantuan
"I think your concept of stealing needs some serious work. Taking my work, without paying for it, is stealing from me."

I think you need to look up 'stealing' in a dictionary, because it obviously doesn't mean what you think it means.

To steal your work, I'd have to take it from you. But filesharing doesn't involve <i>taking</i>. It involves copying, which severly fails as theft, because you still have your work after I've downloaded it. Something can't have been taken away from you if you still infact have it.

@awolf
"…and you’re all biting the hand that feeds. Keep looting from us and someday you might have to start feeding yourselves."

Oh no!! You mean that someday, passionless cynicists like you who only write apps for money might leave the software business!?

But then where would we get all our mediocre, uninspired programs from!?

I write the apps that you thieves are bickering about.

Someone else asking for donations for my work still amounts to someone else getting paid for my work.

As far as I'm concerned Grabulous and Mega are one and the same.

@NubCakes/-Avenging_ANgel-/Christopher/Red Guy
"So, stealing applications ....

The TEN COMMANDMENTS say stealing is a SIN ....

Sheesh, lemme get this straight: Crapulous steals from the AppStore ..."

Oh, if only filesharing <i>was</i> stealing.

But unfortunately, the reality that copying something and thieving something are two very different things gets in the way of your little fib.

I.e, to steal is to take Thing A away from Person A and gives it to Person B. To fileshare is to duplicate Thing A so that now there's two of them, hence Person B can have Thing A without taking it away from Person A.

BTW, bonus points for trying to make your NubCakes screen name look legit by making up another screen name called -Avenging_Angel- just so you could have NubCakes call them a tosser. That's definitely a step up from having your multiple screen names <i>oh so mysteriously</i> be the only ones to ever agree with eachother. Minus points, however, for making it cringingly obvious that you're also Christopher and Red Guy. Pro tip: the only person who has ever ranted about "freetards" and "thieves with feelings of entitlement" on Torrent Freak is you. If you don't want to make it completely transparent that somebody is yet another one of your multiple pseudonyms(which you actually admitted to having, in an incredibly stupid move), then don't have them use your trademarked catchphrases that are unique to no other commentator on this site but you.

It's pretty funny how you have to indirectly stick up for Apple and call downloading cracked iPhone apps stealing even though you really like the HTC Touch HD better, though :D

Job related conflicts of interest, eh?

I.e, to steal is to take Thing A away from Person A and gives it to Person B. To fileshare is to duplicate Thing A so that now there’s two of them, hence Person B can have Thing A without taking it away from Person A.

BTW, bonus points for trying to make your NubCakes screen name look legit by making up another screen name called -Avenging_Angel- just so you could have NubCakes call them a tosser. That’s definitely a step up from having your multiple screen names oh so mysteriously be the only ones to ever agree with eachother. Minus points, however, for making it cringingly obvious that you’re also Christopher and Red Guy. Pro tip: the only person who has ever ranted about “freetards” and “thieves with feelings of entitlement” on Torrent Freak is you. If you don’t want to make it completely transparent that somebody is yet another one of your multiple pseudonyms(which you actually admitted to having, in an incredibly stupid move), then don’t have them use your trademarked catchphrases that are unique to no other commentator on this site but you.

It’s pretty funny how you have to indirectly stick up for Apple and call downloading cracked iPhone apps stealing even though you really like the HTC Touch HD better, though :D

Job related conflicts of interest, eh?

People like you are the cancer of our scene. You, mega, TMB and countless others who don't give credit to people who have cracked the apps and who are the reason we have anything. Go find a hole and never come back.

It's unbelievable how some people actually try to PROFIT off the original authors.
They have totally deviated from the original intentions of sites, such as http://ipastuff.com, which aim to provide a demo for users to avoid them being scammed.

RS is like MEGA - I don't see any difference. Someone crack the soft/rip the movie then upload it to RS but downloader in most cases need to pay (eventually not pay if it's enough calm being;)

@Jimmy

What the hell does the MPAA and RIAA have to do with pirating apps for the iPhone / iPod touch?

Justify stealing any way you like, it's still stealing. I don't necessarily agree with Angel in that you'll go to hell, but I believe you'll get what's coming to you some day! Till then, best of luck!

"~Avenging_Angel~ might be right. I bought one of those candles in the glass jar the other day for kicks and when I tried blowing it out the tip practically exploded shooting sparks all over, burning me, and relighting. Jesus knows I pirate and he doesn’t like it."

Or you exhale lighter fluid. I mean, GOD DAMN.
