Hey Canadians:

Our government is on the verge of making new laws. Last year we had the copyright consultation, and in spite of our input, the new copyright law is about to be introduced.

http://whoacanada.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/canada-dont-need-no-stinkin-dmca/

This year -- right now -- the government is looking for our input on the "Digital Economy".

http://whoacanada.wordpress.com/2010/05/21/digicon/

We MUST respond and participate. If Canadians don't say anything against DMCA laws it will be assumed we agree.

We have a minority government, which is the only reason we do NOT have a Canadian DMCA now. Don't leave it to the politicians, most of them don't understand the Internet or p2p.

Get involved. Fight for electoral reform and a neutral internet. The Canadian Pirate Party is now official, there is probably a chapter of Fairvote near you.

Fight for your online rights!

There's a solution: join and vote for the Pirate Party in your own country when there are elections! In Holland on 9 June 2010, in Belgium on 13 June 2010 (only Brussels), in Sweden in September 2010,...

A part of our program:
1.) DRM must be abolished. Digital Rights Management. It hinders the workability between technologies
and negates the rights of fair use and personal copy. We will undertake any activity that will be necessary to produce laws which will prohibit the use of such technologies and will guarantee the right to personal copy for non-commercial purposes.
2.) The copyright laws must be changed. They are unbalanced, in favor of the copyright holders and
suffocate our cultural community resources. We support the necessity to obtain a substantial revision of international conventions and directives, which will reduce the period of copyrights to a big maximum of 20 years. For most 5 years should do. For this reason, the Movement commits to cooperate with other initiatives having the same goals.
3.) Derivative Use must be Permitted: The basic assumption is that copyright monopoly only covers an exact copy of the creative work. A derivative work is considered a new and separate piece of culture. Any exceptions to this determination, such as subtitled movies or translated books (as determined by the pirate party), must be explicitly listed in the legislation proposed. We will defend open standards, free software, creative commons or any
other important part of the read/write society. We defend open culture. Closed culture = you won't be able to draw on other's work when creating your own; you will have to re-purchase your media when commercial interests decide to
change formats.
4.) Non-commercial file sharing should be legalized. We commit to obtain the de-penalization of P2P
within a short period of time.
