[...] addthis_pub = 'Regeneration'; Posted by Regeneration on April 20th, 2009, 05:32 AM There are many ways for ISPs to manage the increased load BitTorrent traffic places on their network. Some choose to interrupt BitTorrent transfers like Comcast did, but there are more ?consumer friendly? alternatives too. An Israeli Internet provider is adding local web-seeds to speed up torrent transfers and reduce the amount of international traffic. Over the past few years Internet service providers have been increasingly complaining about the massive load BitTorrent transfers place on their networks. They claim that this load can reduce the performance experienced by other subscribers, but the huge amount of data transferred outside their own network is also very costly. To solve these issues, some ISPs have started to slow down all BitTorrent traffic, Comcast-style. Others choose to limit BitTorrent speeds at certain times of the day, and there are other examples where customers simply cannot download files with a .torrent extension at all. Luckily there are options available which can help manage BitTorrent traffic and please customers, all at the same time. The Israeli ISP Bezeq International has taken this more consumer-friendly route. This ISP actually makes BitTorrent downloads faster by caching popular torrent downloads on their own network. By doing so the load on the network decreases and since there are less connections to peers outside the network Bezeq is also saving on costly bandwidth. Read the entire article at TorrentFreak.
Bezeqint is my ISP and I'm not too sure about this article. Personally my torrent downloads have been slower lately and I've been getting a lot of "connection closed by peer". The people on the forum you linked too also sound ambiguous (and the language is Hebrew, there's no such thing as "Israeli").

as a client of Bezeqint - For most torrents in the last few days there have been speed improvements on anywhere between none to massive Improvements. However torrents who have less local seeds or peers fail epicly with this new "service"- e.g MVGroup torrents barely work until I remove the ISP tracker from the list. an ISP should be just a 'pipe' (LOL tubes) and should not MITM any data going through.

OT: MAFIAA dogs (that "reality check" one and the likes) have no moral right to appeal to morals. Hypocrites.

OnT: ISP ignoring amount of BT traffic may bring them too much of expensive foreign/overseas traffic. BT shaping would alienate their own customers, so if they can neither ignore nor shape BT traffic, they have to substitute it with cheap/free local traffic - it's just business, nothing personal.
Biggest Russian tracker (torrents.ru, claims to have 3,500,000+ users) uses "retracker" system, which is close to the mentioned idea. A group of Russian ISPs (Home-IX) have agreed to make internal traffic between themselves free and set up at least one additional tracker that tracks only their local IPs. When torrent is downloaded from main site (torrents.ru), it checks whether downloader's IP belongs to one of Home-IX subnets; if it does, second - local - tracker is automatically added to torrent file, and downloader gets peers both from main tracker (torrents.ru) and local tracker (Home-IX one). The only difference is that (AFAIK) Home-IX ISPs' servers don't host actual files since their local users (all with 100 Mbit fast&cheap LAN lines, in contrast to 5-10-20 Mbit Internet lines) eliminate this need from ISPs.
I don't know how does torrents.ru, being private tracker, deal with users ratios since BitTorrent client report cumulative up/down traffic stats regardless of whether traffic is local or not. In other words, it actually screws U/D ratio for private trackers which (provided they have paranoid admins and/or anti-cheat system) can lead to user bans on such private trackers. So I'd suggest Bezeq Int. users to remove their tracker from private torrents or inform private trackers' admins of this article if they don't want to be accused of ratio cheating.

So now that the RIAA can't make p2p or torrent technology go away they're going after the isp's...don't they know their business model is fvcked...

I've been protesting against the GREEDY RIAA music industry for years by not buying CD's or DVD's, and I don't download from the net either, it's the only way I can legally hurt those GREEDY bastards. I started collecting LP's in the 70's and had a comprehensive LP collection, then CD's came out and I started duplicating my LP collection with CD's, so they have more than doubled their money from me, considering CD prices in the 90's were 18-20 pounds that's about $36 (incl inflation), and...then I woke up and realised that I was being ROYALLY SCREWED by the RIAA Music Industry business model, fvck them, they're just like the horrible greedy wall str bankers. The parallels between greedy wall str bankers and the RIAA Music Industry are many and I depise them with a passion that's close to fire, but at least wall str isn't trying to destroy two legitimate technologies, p2p and torrent. So, go...TPB. And one way of protesting against the RIAA Music Industry is by boycotting their products, hit them where it hurts and can bring about their downfall, boycotting is legal and they can't stop you.

By targeting p2p, torrent and isp technology the GREEDY RIAA fvckers are trying to force you to buy their overpriced DRM'd crap which you can't share with a friend.

Irate and pissed off old timer who has given his LP and CD collection away, after ripping it for backup purposes :-) FvcK YOU RIAA MUSIC INDUSTRY. If I bump into one of you mafo's in a dark alley I will rearrange your kneecaps irish style.

There is NO morality issue.
Bitorrent bandwidth is the same as HTTP bandwidth, and if there's demand, then you do what you can to increase availability to improve your service.

Send a medal to the Bezeq guy in charge of this decision.

The isp's should all give FTTH to all, problem solved, then most of the time the links would be idle since downloads would complete FAST

I hope these guys will keep it running and inspire other ISPs over the world!

Every ISP should do this. There have been a lot of technologies that can do this but almost no one use them.

So the ISP modifies your .torrent files as you download them...adds its own tracker/s and possible web seeds. And this doesn't mess up private torrents because?

Removing/blocking/limiting other trackers from your torrents as well...would that still be "good"?

Doing all this so they can throttle/block almost any international ips...is that still good?

holy shit, not a single on-topic comment, lol. everyone here are retards (incl me).

OP:
This is a GREAT idea. Speeding up all torrent transfers, regardless of what they contain.

Reducing bandwidth to external and international networks and lowering the costs for the ISP, maybe even reduce the price tag for the customer?

I sure hope more ISPs implement this!

BT revolution!

@85
They did not need to prove that TPB makes money to win their case.
They needed to prove TPB has intent of helping people download copyright protected files illegally.
You fail.

REALITY CHECK!!!

Oi, dickhead!

"I am 17 and know more about morals than you freaks."

Don't care how old you are - and even if you know about "moral" you seem to fail in "ethics" - and probably are too dumb to tell the differnce! And even worse you even fail in basic mathematics!!!

As for the dubious "news" you have been citing:
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/06/07/15/the-pirate-bay-making-over-20000-a-day

who wrote it?
How comes that even the prosecution FAILED to provide any valid numbers for the "income" of TPB when they would be so blatantly "public" as you and those liars you cite claim?

Maybe it is because they are wrong propaganda lies and you are too dumb to tell the difference?

BTW (from YOUR news source!):
"the Swedish company Eastpoint Media have sold ads for The Pirate Bay for an average of €60,000 per month"

So selling 60,000 a month calculates to income of 20,000 a day?

HOW DUMB ARE YOU?

REALITY CHECK ANYONE????

You are too stupid to check your sources for inconsistencies. And the numbers are probably pure fiction - since not even the prosecution had been able to substantiate any!

All you are babbeling are the lies of others that you copy without checking and you are even too dumb to recognise the contradictions in your own "facts"!

(Are you deeply religious educated? That would fit very well with your attitude in bragging about your "moral" while failing to think in terms of "ethics" - and your obvious incapacity of critical thinking and scrutiny while reproducing what others told you without even noticing the blatant contradiction in the claims that you are purely parroting!)

And by the way: there furthermore will be a differnenc of the retail price someone sells ads and the generated "payments" passed on to the customer - let alone the resulting "profit" after subtracting the costs of operation.

There IS money made from TPB - but it's probably the profits that ad sellers, hardware vendors and bandwidth suppliers are earning off TPB.

I would wish the boys who actually run TPB WOULD make some money - but the real revenue turnover probably goes into other peoples pockets - those who have NOT been in court!

So if you cry for "reality check" the reality check only shows that you are a dunderhead and have a pretty pathetic and ignorant view on the complexity of the real world.

Grow up - and get some education in critical thinking, scrutiny ... and mathematics!

I AM BACK!

"1. If Piratebay were to be earning MILLIONS surely the people convicted would NOT be saying that they cannot pony up the $905,000 each… it would be PEANUTS to them…"

Yeah sure, they would say they have the money and pay. Oh no, they wouldn't. They would say they do not have the money so they do not have to pay. Seriously, how old are you?
I am 17 and know more about morals than you freaks.

#40 oh how stupid,
do you read tha news?
TPB costs alot, I mean really you can't even check the website you'r current posting on?

"Gottfrid said that the tracker itself uses an average of 600mbits of bandwidth which increases further at weekends. He also revealed that their current hardware has to be replaced once a year and is currently estimated to be worth $120,000, therefore it is depreciating at the rate of $10,000 each month."

Ah, REALITY CHECK posts. I knew the entertainment industry would send some seeds here...

Not saying that it isn't true that PB ain't making a ton of cash. That cannot be proven or disproven, not with our resources. So let's look at it another way.

1. If Piratebay were to be earning MILLIONS surely the people convicted would NOT be saying that they cannot pony up the $905,000 each... it would be PEANUTS to them...

2. You could claim dishonesty in the part of the Piratebay. But, let's put this into perspective. Who were the ones who:
- claimed HUGE LOSSES while STILL MAKING PROFITS ANYWAY?
- claimed LOST SALES as 100% GUARANTEED truth, as if they had a divine right for their products to fly off the shelves?
- INFLATED the value of those LOST (UNGUARANTEED) SALES, from a logical value of $0 to OVER NINE MILLION?
- REDEFINE and DEMONIZE the concept of:
a) Non-Bittorrent or FTP, casual, phyiscal product SHARING?
b) Selling products SECOND HAND to another?
c) Trading a given product between friends?
Yep, it's those middlemen and lobbyists at the entertainment industry. NOT the Piratebay. Pot, meet kettle - unlike Pot, Kettle doesn't go around randomly making defenseless laymen criminals.

That should be a nice little REALITY CHECK for lobbyists.
