Maybe If someone with money were to buy and pay for a 1gb line of internet from merit or something and make local people around him pay a certain monthly price for a pre determined amount of bandwidth like schools do only then could you truly be free from big corporations if the owner of the connection makes the network he created private anyway.

But it's just an idea.

Just because a phone company does it via some ethical obligation, historical obligation, or more than likely "will effect them via regulatory action duress, and hurt their bottom line" is irrelevant in trying to conflate their actions with those of ISP's.

Otherwise you risk the problem of then assigning all ISP's to the same 'duty' as Phone companies and then discover their can be then NO third party liability for ISP's for anything over their infrastructure just like Phone companies retain and courts have agreed to.

See the chilling effects will then work both ways.

The court's or any other private entity cannot , unless legislation stating logs need to be kept for xxx days, force anyone to keep records if they deem it useless, against their ethics, or egregious waste of costs and time.

Is it a problematic situation? Yes definitely.. what can be done? Legislative change can only do this, but that itself needs to be done democratically and using the legislative process in each jurisdiction... and that takes time, energy and fraught with dangers of the public (the community who actually allows laws to be made under community standards and mores ) stating NO and hell NO.

Right, that's my point. I can't differentiate the fakers from yours by the email address any more. So I'm not going to bother. If you can't be bothered to sort out an account, don't see why I should bother trying to find out who's a faker.

"A phone company actually has no duty to keep records of it's users other than what it uses for billing purposes"

Yes, but a phone company will willingly provide information that matched a phone number to a location (and user account). Nobody is asking the ISPs to do anything beyond that.
