So does this mean technically you could DL/UL to torrent sites that have HTTPS in the URL and not get caught? Or do you still need a VPN?

Hmm… apparently Virgin Media are blocking the SSL versions of the site by simply throttling the 443 port so they can’t be accessed at all.

Not true. A few weeks ago I determined the Youtube servers I was streaming from were on the European side of the Atlantic. The only way my traffic could have been routed through Area 51 would be if FTL data transmission exists, in which case I would be extremely angry it isn’t being used to improve my connection’s latency.

It would be better if they could have all the public trackers they use implement SSL on their trackers as well.

Also, some workplaces, schools, etc have hardware that can see through SSL traffic. My workplace recently lifted a lot of the site blocking it does, but warned users that instead the gateway has been updated to “extend monitoring” to all SSL traffic as well.

If you are using a public torrent site, the best practice is to use a VPN, especially if you live in a country where real monetary fines exist for copyright infringement (eg New Zealand)

Unsigned certificates are always a possibility. Just means you have to click ‘continue’ when your browser tells you it might not be secure.
