Kim Dotcom: Artists Rejoice, Megabox is Not Dead

Despite the huge upheavals of the last few months, Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has announced that his answer to the music industry’s outdated business model is coming soon. The Megabox service will shift the balance of power away from multi-billion dollar corporations to the artists who actually make the music. “Artists rejoice. It’s coming and it will unchain you,” Dotcom says.

December last year, a month before the criminal proceeding against Megaupload became public, Kim Dotcom first revealed his plans to launch a new service to transform the music business.

In a guest post for TorrentFreak, the Megaupload founder described the Megabox project as “..a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings.”

“You can expect several Megabox announcements [in 2012] including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models,” he added.

When Dotcom and his colleagues were arrested earlier this year, many people believed that the Megabox project would fade away. In fact, some theorized that Megabox was one of the main reasons why the recording labels and by extension the U.S. Government wanted the Megaupload team to fold quickly.

However, Dotcom now reveals that he hasn’t give up on the project. On the contrary.

Megabox is coming soon

On his brand new Twitter account Dotcom shared a picture of Megabox with the message that “it is coming.”

In a phone conversation Dotcom confirmed to TorrentFreak that the project is indeed making progress, and he promised to share further details in the days to come.

It’s certainly not dead, as the major music labels might have hoped.

Megatweet

While waiting for more details on Megabox, there’s plenty of other material to keep the masses entertained.

Dotcom is clearly in fighting mode judging from the stream of tweets he’s been sending out. Aside from the pictures of his wife and kids, the Megaupload founder also shared a preview of his upcoming website featuring the keywords “MPAA”, “Scandal” and “Obama.”

In a previous interview with TorrentFreak, Dotcom already hinted at government corruption.

“This Mega takedown was possible because of corruption on the highest political level, serving the interests of the copyright extremists in Hollywood,” he said. “Mega has become a re-election pawn.”

A recent tweet affirms this belief and shows that Dotcom is keeping a close eye on the relationship between Vice President Joe Biden and his former colleague, MPAA boss Chris Dodd. “Watch out lovebirds! I know what you did,” he notes.

Lovebirds

While it’s not clear what Dotcom is getting at exactly, it’s no secret that Dodd and Biden are close friends. Also, U.S. attorney Neil MacBride who’s in charge of prosecuting Megaupload served as chief counsel for Biden when he was senator.

Dotcom did inform TorrentFreak that there’s will be some interesting revelations in the coming weeks. So stay tuned for fresh Megabox news, and a whole lot more.

You know who wants to strike a blow against the MAFIAA even more than Kim Dotcom’s lawyers do?

      Kim Dotcom.

I seriously doubt he’s going to risk jeopardizing his own case. And fuck, man, actually take a look at his Twitter account. It’s pretty much the usual dopey Twitter stuff. It’s not like he’s calling Joe Biden a lizardman or inciting armed rebellion.

      • Decimus

It’s pretty hard to believe that they would even have anything on him.  With statements from the judge doubting the likelihood of even getting to court, Kim is probably pretty safe.  Even if he does go to court, unveiling government corruption would very likely help his case as he’d gain public support.  If Kim were actually as bad as they claim he is, he’d be much worse off now.

This news of Megabox is great, though.  If this works out, the number of copyright troll cases should decrease and the music industry may see a lot more talent, rather than Bieber and that trash.  The RIAA may not be happy, but they really don’t do anything useful.  It’s about time we revolutionized.

        • Doug

          Fuck the RIAA!

    • Christopher Joseph

While that was my first thought as well, after taking a look at his twitter account it looks like he’s doing a great job of invoking public sympathy. Showing he’s a family man, enjoys his wealth, and that he’s not afraid of the crap he’s had to put up with so far. If anything, the twitter account might have been the lawyers’ idea.

      • Daniel

Yeah, it does seem awfully like a bunch of PR, but I don’t really think it matters. While his posts go for public sympathy, everything he is fighting for is also in the public’s interest, even if it’s just a pissed off guy seeking revenge. So he has my support! Sick of the current US Gov anyway.

  • Guest

Guess the MPAA and RIAA will start thinking about ways of taking down this new website and possible ways to have Kim indicted and charged etc. for criminal activity in order to stop the go ahead of Megabox. Hope Kim gives gives MPAA and RIAA a good seeing to.

           Probably

  • Guest

The very best of luck to Kim and co and hope this truly gives the Artists what they richly deserve. Hope a load of major artists now give MPAA and the RIAA the boot and join up with Megabox.

    • Daniel

Don’t know why they wouldn’t. 90% is a hell of a lot better than whatever they get offered now… which is about 13% (give or take some since they likely negotiate this) according to:
      http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100712/23482610186.shtml

It also says that on average, for every $1000 sold, the artist makes ~$23. $900 is WAY better than $23.

      • http://www.facebook.com/brently.ford Brently Ford

Most artists are starving due to Hollywood’s bullying tactics.  With Mr Kim Dotcom’s Megabox struggling artists might be able to butter their bread if their creations go viral

Good to hear its not dead.

Like others, I strongly believe that Megabox was the RIAAs real target.

Lets face it, irrespective of their public claims, the MAFIAA dpnt believe their claim of one pirate download equates to a lot sale.

The truth is that RIAA members exploit artists and then (in the past) through their monopoly stranglehold on distribution would exploit fans.

Megabox was always the real threat to the RIAA as it breaks their monopoly hold on artists and does so in such a way that busts the RIAA wide open.

  • Steve Smith

the idea of Megabox probably was one the driving forces to get megaupload shutdown as it took the power of exploiting the artist’s outta the RIAA’s hands.

anyone that thinks that this is not what sparked the Megaupload closure, is living in cloud cuckoo land. anyone that thinks that the entertainment industries in particular the music side, is going to sit idly by is, again, in cloud cuckoo land. they are going to bring out all of the biggest guns they can manage to bribe, con and call in favours from. there is no way they are going to allow this without the ‘mother of all battles’, to coin a saying. however, i think those politicians and law makers that do back the industries need to be very careful! they could easily find themselves in deep shit, one way or another (with a bit of luck!), especially after the complete fuck up that has been made over the Mega shut down. eventually, the truth of this will come out, along with those that ordered and supported it. he is fighting for all internet users, not just for his business

I WISH KIM ALL THE BEST OF LUCK.

    • Guest

I totally agree, the entertainment industries, MPAA and RIAA are not going to be sitting on their backside with allowing Megabox to get off the ground and running, They will do everything legal and illegal to destroy Megabox in making up false allegations, false charges, giving back handers, bribes, etc. in getting this destroyed once and for all. This is going to be one hell of battle and I wish Kim all the best of British luck to coin a phrase in getting Megabox of the ground and make it very successful and i hope and do hope that with all the shit, corruption, backhanders, bribes, illegal damages that occurred with the illegal closure of Megaupload by the FBI and entertainment industries that all the shit, corruption, backhanders and bribes that were all committed by the entertainment industries and politicians etc. gets all exposed for the whole world to see and that these people that caused all this ends up with shit on their faces from the backfiring and exposure from all of this that that they have caused. I do hope that Megabox benefits Artists more so financially that the MPAA and RIAA gives them and this ends up giving the MPAA and RIAA the same treatment and shit with them having to close down that they have caused with Megaupload.

    • Razul

The part with mismanagement, misuse of law and potential bribery I agree with.

The part that its “a problem” to pay for music online, and Kim is the one that is “solving” it, thats the one thing I think people are delusional.
      http://www.moreofit.com/similar-to/www.songcastmusic.com/

Its not the problem to get your mp3s into any music store. It cost lest the $50 worldwide. Its the problem getting found by enough people that 10% of that people are willing to shell out real money. 80% of stuff thats downloaded its coming from the respective Top 1000 lists.

Building an own brand, being known enough that someone types your name in in the “megabox” search is the problem. The same you have with iTunes or Amazon or Simfy or wherever.

This is about the megastars, right? Once their contracts run out, they won’t need *any* website to sell their music. They have websites of their own that people look for online where they can make 100% of the profits from sales once their contracts are up with the major labels who helped them become mega stars. They’re not going to go with some place where they have to pay out.
If they do, why not CDBaby.com or IndieMusic.com or any one of the *hundreds* of well established and respected indie music sites that give most of the profits to the musicians themselves? Why would they go with an unproven entity?
Oh, if the eeevviill music industry was behind the Megaupload take down because it was just supporting music, why didn’t they go after any of the indie music sites that sell more and more from independent musicians/bands that will never be under a record label?
The music industry put a ton of money into making a product of the mega stars’ music by mutual agreement and so controls the use of the product. They own the product until the stars’ contracts run out.
If you truly don’t mind paying for music, hit your favorite indie band site up. They all have downloadable music for sale.

megabox is going to change everything, i bet this was the whole reason for the feds (our government) to try and take kim dotcom down as it will put a major whole in the industry and the way things are done. with lots of money comes lots of power and we all know the music industry got alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    • Guest

I don’t see how. Mainstream music will always use labels.

This will give indie artists another service which they can use. It was bandcamp which I personally believe that changed how the indie music worked. Megabox looks like Grooveshark but enabling people to purchase the music and also get it free through using the Megakey adware software (which I’m against considering this replaces ads on other websites with his own ads).

Out of interest, if the labels went completely like Megabox wants… who would do these amazing big events in the O2? the average one single person making there own music wouldn’t be able to do that nor would they know how to market there music.

Labels market and organise tours etc. I’m just curious on how this will continue without labels?

    • Andrew me

I don’t see any difference really , there will still be people wanting to go to concerts if that is what you are thinking …there will still be people sponsoring the concerts, there will be tours arranged by more people than ever before. I just see there being more and more entertainment out there. I mean really how much does it cost to do a concert maybe a million or two for the most elaborate, Mega could have 30 mega concerts a year and not notice the cost.

    • Anyone

labels don’t organize concerts, that is usually outsourced.

so once the big labels finally die there will still be music and concerts

      • Guest

        Who organizes major concerts then?

I mean, not small concerts in a building (sure, indie artists can easily manage that sort of stuff, even though they’d still need to gain a fanbase which is hard without marketing – which the labels do). I’m talking about massive concerts such as Dimmu Borgir & KORK in Oslo. They wouldn’t have been able to do that without there label. (I’m using them as an example since I don’t listen to pop etc so I can’t give an example regarding those genres).

I really would hate to see such awsome massive-scale concerts go – they are wonderful to attend ^_^

        • Anyone

there are specialized companies that do that
you don’t need a label to hire them, just money ;)

        • Guest

Concerts will never go. The stadiums are build, the fans are there and they got money. Whats that rockstar say in waynes world, gotta look this up “If you book them, they will come.” damn that quote was referring to the artists and not the fans but what ever.. Deals will be made, business will continue…

    • Shitgun

Highly popular artist says “If I can pre-sell X number of tickets, we can do an amazing gig at the O2″

Because the labels aren’t taking a cut of the profits, nobody buys any tickets.

      You’re logic is flawless.

      • Shitgun

Mate it is insane news but Japan is an insane country.. Look at this quote from wiki about their weed laws (Penalties for possession or use of marijuana in Japan are severe, and
convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and fines. Possession of any amount, as little as 0.1 g, is punishable by jail sentence for up to 5 years and/or a fine of up to 30,000,000 yen (USD 344 790). Moreover, the defendant has to stay in police custody for at least a few weeks until a court decision is made.)

  • Andrew me

As long as he does not put all his eggs in one basket, imagine if you will, him starting a mega site and allowing each country to have a mega site or even a few mega sites all competing to outperform each other and each one being run under a different company. With one top 40 chart every week of the most downloaded tracks worldwide. Then if they want to go for him again they might get one site but the others will just fill the gap. I am sure he has thought of this and i am sure he is intelligent enough to not create a situation where any government anywhere can take any of his sites down.

This is good news and i hope he has arrangements to keep the site/ sites up if he is ever arrested on false charges again.

Finally, a place where Fredrika will not troll the comments on behalf of “LegalSounds”!

    • Fredrika

      > “Finally, a place where Fredrika will not troll the comments..”

Whether or not i comment under an article usually depends on if any actual trolls, according to the correct use of the term, spam the comments with false propaganda and lies about copyright related issues. So what you’re really saying is “Finally, an article where pro-copyright trolls don’t spread their false propaganda and lies in the comments”.

I guess they’re busy shaking on the floor scared of the news in this article and other recent news. Acta receiving five blows in a row, Elisa taking the Pirate Bay block to the supreme court, MegaBox is back on track, Denmark scrapping the plans to send out warning letters, Woz getting behind Kim Dotcom, The courts ordered Pirate Bay unblocked in India, US courts starting to reject copyright trolls, Pirate Bay making the UK blocks useless by adding new IP addresses every week.

It’s getting harder and harder to fool the content creators into believing that they actually get any worth from funding Riaa and Mpaa.

      > “..on behalf of “LegalSounds”!”

This was a new one! Pointing out facts and correcting incorrect claims under hundreds of articles is done on behalf of a Russian webstore, which has only been addressed once on this site? Well ok then.. =)

That the Mega Fatboy stands a chance of getting back to anything resembling fighting trim is indeed hopeful and miraculous.  It’s only common sense that any implosion of the prosecutor’s case would leave Kim DotCom in a powerful position to demand compensation and to hold those responsible for his pains and losses accountable.

I suggest we think in terms of the long haul.

What benefits Copyright Dissent is a slow, very Public Implosion of this prosecutor’s case.  Just as the Pirate’s Bay’s daily struggle against British Censors makes it, rather that Copyright Holders or the government, increasingly the Global Champion in the struggle for citizen access to ideas; the slow public failure of the Megaupload prosecution will show the Government overreaching to nullify Constitutional Rights to protect the interests of previlidged monopolists by seeking to destroy emerging competitors.

Above all, we should remember WHY we stand a chance.

Had PIPA, SOPA, ACTA, CISPA, and TPP, passed as intended, the case against MegaUpload and Kim DotCom, and every other claim filed by Copyright Holders, could ONLY be described as a WINNING case; and, MegaUpload’s prosecutor would have no hard explaining to do with respect to his office’s nullification of Civil Rights because the nullification of those Civil Rights could be found WRITTEN in those statutes.

We should remenber:  We only have to lose once, to lose everything.

I have just sent the following email to my 8 local MEPs
    QUOTE=====

Dear MEP for North West England.

    ACTA

As I’m sure you are aware, on 21st June 2012, the
INTA Committee joined the four committees that advised it, and voted decisively
against adoption of the so called Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

If the agreement were just about banning ‘knock off’
aircraft parts and the like which have killed people in the past, I would
wonder why. However, in reality it is an attempt by the copyright middlemen to
monopolise intellectual property – including life saving medicines – to enrich
themselves. The cost of this (quite apart from the financial one) would be a
severe limitation of European citizens’ rights to freedom and privacy – rights
we have been fighting for in the UK for 797 years, since King John
was forced to sign Magna Carta at Runymede.

ACTA does not benefit your electorate, it attacks their
rights as citizens. I therefore respectfully urge you to vote against the
adoption of ACTA when it comes before the European Parliament in plenary
    session early in July.

    Yours Faithfully

    Colin Carr

    Lancashire

PS, I have deliberately omitted my postal address and phone
number as I prefer to receive any replies by e-mail.

    UNQUOTE=====

Feel free to copy and/or amend the text if you wish,… a bit like a creative commons license really ;-)

With the mass media blackpainting of KIM Dotcom don’t forget to question what you read about KIM Jong-Un too.

You can not trust big media, full stop. Their goal is to make money for their owner and their friends, and press whatever political agenda. They do not care about reporting the truth about what goes on in the world.

Always get the other side of the story. Watch RT or even PressTV and read blogs like this.

Sites like Torrentfreak are the future of newsmedia for any thinking person.

I hate Kim Dontcum as much as the MAFIAA. Sharing is caring, but not getting filthy rich off the shit. Living in a mansion, buying private jets, etc., and publicly flaunting it is what got his fatass busted. This clown gives a bad name to all the filesharers out there.

    • foff

Oh fuck you.  It is not like he tried to charge for torrents or something.  He created a damn good cyberlocker.  Do you think the fucks running rapidshare are poor.  They started the whole but just because they did a little lobbying all is forgiven?  You are just a jealous poor fuck.

I really wish Google would buy Megaupload. They could integrate it with Google Drive and Google Music and incorporate MegaBox so that artists could still get their 90% cut for going solo. Google would gain a lot of grounds in the Music industry and it would be much more of the “open source” nature than this sue happy one it is now. The MAFIAA wouldn’t be able to take on both Kim and Google, and with Google’s fast growing share in the music industry (if they bought MegaBox), the MAFIAA’s funds would diminish rapidly.

    Okay… I can dream can’t it?

The MAFIAA will sure do everything to stop Google and Megaupload teaming up together and Google will no doubt will be on the receiving end of legal action etc. It sure would be a good idea to see Google and Megaupload teaming up together as this may well be the start of the end for MAFIAA. The beast will always be the most verocious to another animal when it knows that it soon will be put to death by the other animal.

New Zealand the land the is still nuclear free but I would rather be FBI free. Double deal done by dirt cheap MPs, Judges and the crown law office makes a monKEY out of this micKEY mouse outfit we are turning into own as NZ. The fall out is more toxic than the wine box affair by the Bank$ter which Im sure John Key was no stranger to.

Rock on Kim your a bloody legend!
