Kim Dotcom Dismissed As Fraudster By Twitter and Facebook

The U.S. Government has accused Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom of conspiracy to defraud , and now two tech giants appear to be having trouble trusting Dotcom as well. Despite faxing over official government-issued ID, he still can’t get Twitter to believe he’s the real deal. Furthermore, Facebook won’t accept ‘Dotcom’ as a valid surname for a personal account. So, inspired by Reddit, we have something that will hopefully do the trick, at least with Twitter.

Like many famous people and other celebrities online, Kim Dotcom has many tens of thousands of fans and followers. However, not all of these people have his best interests at heart.

The problem comes when people do a search for Kim’s Twitter account using Google. Although his own account with more than 113K followers appears right there in the top results, so does another bearing the Kim Dotcom name.

The account is fake, but it is set up to look like the real thing. People who know Kim will hopefully realize that tweets such as “EFF THE FEDS. IMMA BUST OUT OF JAIL TODAY. WATCH ME. MY MEGAESCAPE WILL BE BROADCAST LIVE ON THE INNANET. MEGAUPLOAD.COM 4 LYF,” aren’t genuine, but nearly 9,300 followers of the account appear not to.

To try and add further credibility to his own account, Kim asked Twitter to terminate the fake and give him a verified account. His correspondence with Twitter shared with TorrentFreak a few minutes ago is detailed below:

KimDotcom, Jul 09 07:57 pm (PDT):

Full name: Kim Dotcom
Username of reported account: @Kim_Dotcom

Description: This account is impersonating me. Using my photo, etc. Please terminate that account because a lot of people who search for me find the Impersonator instead of me.

Email address: [REDACTED]
Twitter username (optional): @KimDotcom

Anything else? (optional): I would also humbly ask to please verify my account so that I have the verify label.
Kind regards,
Kim Dotcom

Of course, when it comes to being identifiable, Dotcom can quite literally put most of us in the shade – the man is a giant in every sense of the word, especially online. So to accompany his application he sent over some photo ID – his driving license. Things didn’t go well.

“Here is the reply I received [from Twitter] after I sent them a copy of my Hong Kong international driving license with photo and government stamp,” Kim told TorrentFreak.

TwitterKim

“@Twitter declines to certify me. I faxed an ID. They think it’s fake. A search for my name shows imposter as the first result. Might quit!” Kim said in response to the rejection.

But hold on, there might be another way. Like millions of others, here on TorrentFreak we’re massive fans of Reddit and their AMAs. The site has a number of accepted ways for people to show who they say they are, so we suggested one method to Kim. Hopefully this will be enough for Twitter.

KimTwitterProof

The full, genuine, real deal, verified-by-the-people Twitter account of Kim Dotcom can be found here, but with Facebook there is another problem, as illustrated in their email to Kim shown below.

We will not be able to assist you with your inquiry based on the ID you provided. Facebook requires all users to use their accurate first and last names. It is also important to note that using fake identification is against the law.

The problem? Dotcom is not accepted by Facebook as Kim’s second name.

So using a fake ID on Fagbook is against the law.

    What fucking law ?

    • PeterIcedale

Using a fake ID is illegal in most countries, what you use it for is on little importance. Though most countries will react differently between the underage drinker using it to acquire alcohol and the “professional” using it to fraud people out of money.

In my country it goes under (roughly translated) “falsifying official documents”

      • Guest

Actually that’s wrong, if he’s imitating someone then he’s guilty of attempted identify theft and other offenses, but using a completely fictitious name on Fagbook is NOT against ANY law in MOST countries. Now using a false name for government/public sector purposes is another matter entirely.

        • Torrentfreak

Yes be we aren’t talking about using a fake NAME on facebook, we are talking about using a fake ID to verify your identity with facebook. as PeterIcedalesaid using a fake ID for any purpose (however trivial) is against the law in the most countries.of course its all moot to this dicussion since Kim didnt use a fake ID in the first place

      • ANoi

A facebook ID is not an official ID…..or is there a new law for that

      but he used valid ID

      • http://twitter.com/bob_love Bob Love

(And @twitter-175323965:disqus below) No, he didn’t. He sent a copy of a Hong Kong international driving licence. He probably could have sent a proper (and more valid) form of identification but that would have simply served it’s purpose and wouldn’t have got him any publicity.

        • Timmy Junior

Can you point out why a Hong Kong international driving license isn’t a “proper (and more valid) form of identification”?

        • kwame

What form of identification would you suggest? His passport? That’s been confiscated.

          Driver’s license = valid I.D., moron.

          http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16996938

I’m not in the least surprised a HK license wasn’t accepted. Had he sent his NZ one it probably would’ve been (NZ, unlike HK, has no National ID card so the NZ DL is widely accepted as proof of identity).

Anybody who thinks *every country’s* driving license is guaranteed to work as “proof of identity” and especially, across international borders is sadly mistaken.

        • Guest

The guy is a citizen of NZ. How can Hong Kong’s driving license work as a valid proof?

      • ANoi

        That was twitter, not facebook.

When you when to have ago about something you don’t need to use childish homophobic terminology…

      • Timmy Junior

I’m British and “fag” means the thing you smoke with. >_>

        • Guest

That’s not the primary meaning of the word nowadays. It’s a pejorative against homosexuals. Your definition may be valid, but the pejorative usage is far more common, particularly on the internet. I’m sure you’re already aware of this, so I’m not quite sure why you posted in the first place.

        • Lnqd

I agree. I just took a drag on my fag (big fat 12 inches long) and something thick white hot expelled from my mouth. mmmmmm… it was a nice blow. I keep this in my pants. You want some?

        • Mark

No it doesn’t fag is short for faggot. The word you’re looking for is cig.

        • ANoi

people use “fag” to imply cigarette
people use “fag” to imply idiot
people use “fag” to imply “gay person”
          Among others……
          Context is a fine thing.

All these “defenders” of LGBT people are obsessed with words they are ashamed to use, because of fear of being seen, to be homophobic, so they CEMENT them as being gay slurs. NOT HELPING. (good intentions but NOT HELPING)Want to help ?Redefine the slur to not mean homosexual.

        • ANoi

           @9684bc8608dc65c95e51baebe9528fb9:disqus  “a pejorative against homosexuals”

          Thanks for clearing that up.
Facebook has nothing to do with homosexuals directly. So when called Fagbook it’s good that you make it a LGBT slur.
Keep it that way… Make sure it stays like that….Protect the term “fag”

          I am a proud homosexual btw ….

At least I am not a fag.  PIC (highly) RELATED

        • Anon

Growing up as an IT nerd in a mill community I was called “Fag” atleast a dozen times each day. I feel that I have the right to call whomever I want a fag. That faggot facebook is full of so much faggotry. Problem?

      • No1_2_u

Pull your head out of your sandy vagina & don’t jump to conclusions.

Just because you use the term “Fag” for a homosexuals, it doesn’t mean the rest of us do.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fag_(disambiguation)
        Fag may refer to:
Fag, a colloquialism for cigaretteFag, a junior boy who acts or acted as servant (“fagging”) to a senior boy at a British independent schoolFag, or faggot (slang), an American English slur for a homosexual or effeminate man.A short form used among stock exchange traders for the stock of Antofagasta PLC

        • John Spartan

Fag means an extreamly annoying biker / or other annoying person.

‘Fag’ is only a prerogative term against LGBT community because you and them allow it to be. Grow the fuck up and stop living in the fucking 90′s, your as bad as the MAFIAA for holding onto shit as long as possible.

        • Guest

I dislike over sensitive people, I call those fags.
So there’s an angry fag there and it’s got nothing to do with taste in gender.

        • IDIOCRACY

And Gay means happy, joyfull :D

      • Guest

It’s his right to use whatever terminology he desires, if anyone wants to go ahead with fascist claims to oppress or censor his opinion then show some proof that he is  intentionally trying to hurt someone.
Otherwise anyone getting merely offended by something holds no value and  the baseless accusations are quite harmful to his psyche and his honor.

        • ANoi

          Thanks, I appreciate that.

As I said above, I am gay and now am being accused of being homophobic.

oh please! Nobody calls mentally handicapped people”retards” and nobody calls gays “fags” or “faggots” anymore. The meaning of the word has changed in most literate countries

These “fake outraged” on “MY behalf” people piss me off.

They seem intent on making sure, ONLY us LGBT people are called fags.

        • ScrewEwe2

When I was young the proper and respectful term for someone with “Down Syndrome” was “Mongoloid”. That alway’s confused me because I assumed that you would call something made by a person from Mongolia “Mongoloid” or as a physical description being characteristic of or resembling a Mongol person, but it seems with political correctness that the term “Mongoloid” isn’t politically correct in any conversations anymore. Genghis Kahn IMO was a Mongoloid.

Same thing with the term “Negro”. Call a black person in the US a “Negro” today and in most cases they will take offence even though in Spanish the word for black is negro. Only blacks can get away with the liberal use of the word “Nigger”. When I was in First Grade the teacher explained that the word “Nigger” in the dictionary was used to describe someone that was “dirty or uncouth”. The derivation of the word “Nigger” came from referring to a person, likely a slave, as someone from the African nation of Niger, but with time the term “Nigger” came into broad use as describing all black people as “Niggers”, and at first wasn’t meant as a slur or insult.

Even though words are just words, they can often have deeper implications. Alway’s wondered why the Brits started calling Cigarettes “Fags”.

        • Techanon

yup, there are no bad words, just people who take ofence at these words.

        • Guest

Nope, we now call them “mentally challenged” instead, althrough I have to disagree, some people still call people retards, as to mean they’re mentally retarded, as opposed to retard meaning idiot.

        • Anonymous

In what way has the word “Fag” changed? where I come from, it is still an insult to a incredibly stupid person OR can refer to the gay/queer community.

      • ANoi

I am homosexual. Guess I must be homophobic too.
I never knew that about myself.

When people say “fag”.I take it out of context and assume it’s me they insult.

I bet $100 you are straight, trying to “protect” poor helpless gay people ?

        “Fagbook” for a good reason.

Compared to a infinite knowledge our very finite database of what we know means nothing. In comparison we’re too retarded to be held accountable.

Now the subject at hand :/ it looks like they’re going to fight Dotcom to the bitter end which is sad. I mean they’re considering dropping the case ffs. If he was really guilty there is no way in hell they would drop it.

      • ANoi

@GoDXIlE:disqus true….WBBC is muff cabbage of hate and intolerance.
Throw every slur they have back at them, they are the ones butthurt by LGBT’s.

Get’s me going but, when people “think they are doing good” by reinforcing the fag label on gay people. FFS some even say it’s not used to describe cigarettes in the UK, which it is (fact), all to “protect” ME and other LGBT’s.
Do they really want “fag” to be used only for gay people, or are they too short sighted and stupid to see, the positive reality the redefinition creates.
People use it all the time to describe asshats of unknown sexual orientation (which is good for gay people) Redefining that slur is win #obvious.
        *rant over.*

Yeah….If they drop it, I hope they reimburse Kim for all the hassle, they sure fucked him and Megaupload good.

an international drivers license is something you can mail in a form and send them a photo and some money, and they mail back the ID; no verification. these are popular for kids to make themselves older enough to drink

    • http://twitter.com/myksomerville Myk Somerville

Yeah, but he sent a real NZ licence, issued by the NZ government, in his real name (which IS Kim Dotcom, after a legal name change)

Didn’t he have his name changed by DPOL, so his legal surname is actually Dotcom? Seems good enough for me.

Facebook and Twitter would probably also ban user accounts for anyone names James Bond.

    • Guest

there probable is someone already named as James Bond; talking ofcourse IN REAL LIFE not in that movie series agent.

      • Anyone

there was someone called James Bond that was the inspiration for the books (the name only, he was an american ornithologist)

  • PeterIcedale

Well, even though I support the defendants in the MegaUpload case, I can actually understand Twitter and Facebooks hesitation.

He has a changed his last name to a “joke” and its no problem faking an ID to Amanda Hugandkiss or I.C Wiener.

I guess the answers are just boilerplate answers and that no one at Twitter and FB have looked closely at the case. I guess that if he are sending copies of credentials by registered post with a stamped document from whatever authority in NZ that handles name changes and such he will have no issues. Kind of ironic that “cutting edge” internet companies should require such in this day and age.

On the other hand, Mr Dotcom is fond of portraying himself as a “persecuted man of the people” (in some areas he is persecuted) so it can explain the fuzz he and TF is making out of something that is easily handled, even if it takes time.

    • Guest

It doesn’t matter what he changed his last name to. It’s still his actual, legal name.

      • PeterIcedale

I agree with you, but when your name sounds like one of Bart Simpsons prank calls you should not be surprised if you are not believed at first. How would you react to Bea O’ Problem and I.P. Freely?

Like I said, I think this is a boilerplate answer from FB and Twitter, and I guess that a scanned copy of a ID is not enough for anyone to get the “official” status. My guess is you need to send them an actual god-damn letter bearing an actual ink stamp from some sort of recognized governmental  body. Mr Dotcom and TF are blowing this way out of proportions.

  • Jbre

Two person having the same name is really really common. What’s the fucking problem officer?

    • Anyone

it’s highly unlikely that there is someone else called Kim Dotcom

  • http://twitter.com/NeoVanGoth Bundestroll

Maybe Kim should take over his real-realname account:
    @Kim_Schmitz ;-P

    • Eddy

He has legally changed his name, so how would he prove that Schmitz is his real name when it no longer is.

      • tremor

Still probably easier than proving it’s Dotcom, real or not.

        • http://twitter.com/Paco420_Pt Paco420

How would it be easier to prove schmitz is the real name when there are documents stating that the name is no longer his and states Dotcom is?  Unless your saying he should willingly lie and use a fake name because facebook wants to be twats?

There’s no law regarding fake ID on the Internet. You cannot of course use fake ID for driver’s licenses or any other form of official government ID, since that would be forgery. But there’s nothing in the law stopping a person from using a handle or penname on a website.

      • Accer70

Unfortunately, there are now laws about using fake ID on the Internet, at least for some Americans. One such law goes into effect today in Louisiana (along with around 500 other laws we don’t really need).

What’s in a name? A person can even legally change his name to 12345. Dotcom is not a weird name at all when you think about people having surnames like Crocodile, Dick etc.

      • PeterIcedale

True that you can change a name, but would you take a person that introduces himself as Oliver Clothesoff or I.P. Freely at face value? If you have a name that sounds like one of Bart Simpsons prank calls you should be prepared to have to convince people. And as Mr Spartan states, send them an document from the NZ authorities and its no problem. Its just a bit more bureaucratic.
