The Big Labels and the RIAA have always done things in a questionable manner. I can see that they may get immediate benefits from lawsuits, but long-term they are only screwing themselves.

Thank you for the great explanation about the squirrels flipping around haphazardly -- it all makes perfect sense.

Not only does it mean more pure profit for them, they probably could have came to some deal to cover the licensing fees they "should" have paid while trying to build up their user base. For example the first 53 million songs (or whatever the number is) that get streamed could be charged double royalty fees, to make up for those missed before obtaining agreements.

Considering it costs them nothing to have Groovshark running along side iTunes, Spotify, etc there's no reason to favor a large lump sum and shutting down Grooveshark instead of letting it operate and establishing another long-term income stream. Grooveshark might not bring in the millions like iTunes or Spotify, but a little somethin-somethin has to be better than nothing, right... Though with having a ton of streaming services available, that means each service is going to have to lower subscription prices in order to compete, which could translate to a loss of income for the suits (10% of $25 is a lot more than 10% of $9.99). But then again, as prices go down, more people will probably sign on for a service, or even two (for awhile I was paying for both Spotify and Google All Access). And if they have a decent service that offers a wide song selection for a decent price - that drastically lowers their incentive to pirate... Why should I risk getting caught and sentenced to prison time and a multi-million dollar fine when I could just pay $10 a month. Plus using legit sources drastically reduces my risk of downloading malware and having to hunt through all the dark corners of the 'net to find a new source every few months when MAFIAA gets my current one taken offline.

And the squirrel probably flips around to disguise it's scent trail. The more chaotic and over lapping it is, the less likely the neighborhood cat is going to be paying the squirrel a house call... Or the eagle over head will be able to swoop down & snatch it off the ground... Or a rival squirrel will find his food stockpile....

They were actually gaining a foothold with the following:

<strong>Grooveshark Signs With Sony, Steps Over that Wavy ‘Piracy’ Line</strong>
http://torrentfreak.com/grooveshark-signs-with-sony-steps-over-that-wavy-piracy-line-130828/

<strong>"Grooveshark has just announced that it has reached a settlement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The agreement, which puts all legal disputes between the companies behind them, sees the signing of a licensing agreement to make Sony/ATV content legally available from the Grooveshark platform."</strong>

Plus, they had already made a deal with EMI:
[From same article]

<strong>"The licensing deal is the second in less than four weeks for Grooveshark. Earlier this month the company announced that it had settled its differences with EMI Music Publishing with the signing of a licensing agreement. According to Informa, EMI is the second largest music publisher with a 20% revenue market share in 2012."</strong>

Things seemed to be looking up for them...until now, that is.

I wonder why the labels just can't seem to understand that in spite of the illegalities used to get this far, it will only mean 'mo money' for them in the long run?

Trying to figure them out is like trying to figure out why a squirrel flips around in the grass for no apparent reason.
