The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Leaked DVD Screener of The Social Network A BitTorrent Hit

The Social Network tells the dramatized story of the founders of Facebook, the number one social-networking site that was launched in 2004. The film premiered nearly three weeks ago, and since then many BitTorrent users have been waiting for a decent pirated copy to appear online. Yesterday, the waiting was over and tens of thousands of people immediately fired up their torrent clients to grab a leaked DVD Screener of the movie.

David Fincher’s The Social Network, an adaptation from Ben Mezrich’s book Accidental Billionaires, enjoyed its theater premiere at the start of October. In the weeks that followed the film grossed more than $75 million in the United States alone, exceeding the $50 million it took to produce it.

While hundreds of thousands of people went to see the film in theater, a smaller but significant group stayed behind, keeping a close eye on their favorite torrent sites.

In October, the The Social Network was the most searched for movie title on KickassTorrents, and most likely many other torrent sites. However, for the best part of the month there wasn’t a single pirated copy to be found. Not even a camcorder version shot in a local theater, which is relatively unique for such as high profile movie.

This changed last week when the first cammed copy of The Social Network appeared online, which was immediately downloaded by thousands of BitTorrent users. Fast forward another week, and there now is a DVD-screener copy of the movie available, which is grabbing the attention of even more downloaders.

As all screeners, this review copy was leaked from a studio source. Despite all the watermarks and preventive measures by movie studios, it got out months before the scheduled DVD-release.

At the time of writing it is just over 24 hours after the first torrent appeared online, and thus far the DVD-screener has been downloaded well over 100,000 times already. A quick look at who’s downloading the film reveals that most of the current peers come from the United States (31%), followed by The United Kingdom (14%), Canada (9%), Australia (8%) and India (4%).

This is just the beginning though. Usually, the greatest download boost for a pirated movie occurs with the release of a DVDrip copy, and that has yet to come for The Social Network. If this happens in the next month, the film about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and friends might have a shot at ending up in the list of top 10 most pirated films of this year.

A dubious honor, but not necessarily a financial disaster.

Whether the pirated copies will have any effect on theater visits and the revenues of the film remains to be seen. As with music, not every downloaded movie is a lost ‘sale’ and one can even argue that it might serve as a promotional tool in some cases through word-of-mouth advertising.

I saw it in the cinema and will download and watch it again. Even if I had not already watched it in the cinema yet, I would still have gone before downloading.

Just because I download movies, it doesn’t mean I won’t go to see it in the cinema. Movie companies just don’t get this part.

I always wait to go to the cinema for movies I REALLY wanna see as it is a better viewing experience. I may or may not end up downloading it later to view with someone who wouldn’t bother or can’t go to the cinema to watch it.

Nice, it is just going to make more anti-piracy companies now.

got it from rlslog.net yesterday. Worth a watch. Good film and decent quality on the screener.

Well if the movie was available in NZ cinemas I wouldn’t have to download it now would I? The movie has been available in the US for 3 weeks, and is STILL “Coming Soon” in NZ. Now that a good quality download has come out before being released here naturally I’m going to download it as I really do want to see it.

and now that it has been posted on torrentfreak, im sure the # of downloads will skyrocket

I thought Hollywood only makes crap and that’s why you don’t want to pay?

It’s so bad you can’t wait to pirate it?

If you like the movie, why not instead support the people who invest in making movies like this possible?

  • freeinternet

I think I’ll go watch AFK, The PirateBay movie when its out instead

  • politux

To the haters – I would like to say that I enjoyed the movie as farce. Similar to Jersey Shore, it shows an exaggerated, satirical view of American life.

In the same way that Bret Ellis skewered the 1980′s with American Psycho.

  • Anonymous

facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is a cia Spybook . Whoever supports this movie as far as buying it, seeing it in the theatre, etc should get v’d. Spybook steals your info, shares it with everyone for $, and says “anyone who trust me is dumb” Mark Zuckerberg when he created cia spybook.

I don’t even want to see this piece of shit out of principle. zuckerberg is a prick who doesn’t give a shit about the users and their privacy. Anyone wanting to know anything about anyone can find it out on there .. the users are just as stupid (most of them)

  • Johnny

The makers of this movie are just trying to cash in on the Facebook name (and trademark) and the supposed “story” behind it with Mark Zuckerberg. They are trying to make money off someone else’s work. Sounds familiar?

Apparently the story has little relation to the truth. If it is fictional, as it appears to be, why did they have to use real life people and a real company? Oh wait, I know, it’s to make more money…

  • Kejki

Movie sounds similar to the Pirates of Silicon Valley movie.

  • GrX

ha effects the cinema??? been twice now this week last week and completely sold out of everything

paranormal 2, easy A, shitbook, so how they claim piracy is killing sales is beyond a joke

I’ll be downloading this; respect to the group that cammed it, but a/v was pretty shitty really.

My understanding is that it’s not that accurate though. I love the way that they made Mark out to be a hacker just because he found an open directory listing with a few pictures in it.

  • PiRat

Zuckerberg stole the idea anyways and got sued over it.

Not to mention he’s a prick!

  • awe, shucks

They only made $25 million profit in three weeks. Wow they live such a hard life, how are they gonna put food on their table now?

I don’t even have enough to pay the bills due to illness but for them to only make $25 million in 3 weeks is a crime. Poor, poor movie industry. Now they need call their lawyers get them more money.

So many filthy casuals dismissing this film just because it’s about Facebook. People shouldn’t talk about a medium they clearly don’t understand.

  • anonymous

DVD Rip copies of “The Social Network” seem to be available in Bitsnoop.

  • ahem

Pirates of silicon valley was good, dont care about a biography about a social networking site that will be defunct before we know it. We obviously didn’t learn anything from friendster or myspace.

  • Dub

    +1 to both 24 and 28.

Nobody got hurt by this being available to download, and nobody cares if you come on here with a biased view because you don’t ‘like’ Facebook. That’s not the point. I’m pretty sure there’s quite a lot of readers here who, like myself, haven’t ever been on Facebook but would still have a passing interest in the movie.
Not enough to buy the DVD or see it in a theater, but enough to download it.
Nobody loses, except those who pass judgement with no knowledge.

  • me0w

This not a movie, it’s docu-drama lies about a guy nobody likes.
    An dtigeann tu RIAA?

  • FuzzyX

It makes me wonder why anyone would want to see this movie. Since they make movies with the aim to be popular to make profit then this seems like worst of the worst.

They made this movie to be popular because Facebook is popular. What is in this movie makes no difference as long as they mention Facebook enough.

So they would make it interesting so they movie don’t suck but then there goes the truth.

Better idea for those interested in Facebook is to wait for the documentary when it hits the History channel.

  • jojo

I bet a lot of movie people are pissed about it

  • Shellfish

Movies are getting too expensive, inflation i suppose. I didn’t see the movie in theaters and might download it later, not in a hurry though. I tolerate facebook because many times it is the only way to reach someone and wouldn’t care if it faded away like myspace. However once that happens another one will take its place and the cycle social networking will continue. That said, honestly Fuck FaceBook and this stupid film.

What are you people talking about?
You haven’t even seen the movie.

It doesn’t present Zuckerberg in a favorable light at all.
It calls him an asshole repeatedly throughout the movie and shows how he lied and fucked over people close to him to get to the top.

It wasn’t made with his co-operation.

It was directed by the guy who made Fight Club and Se7en.
It’s received great reviews so far and has a 97% rating on Rotton Tomatoes and 8.5/10 on IMDB.

I saw someone mentioned Pirates Of Silicon Valley, this is quite similar in its portrayal.

I agree with #2 i will always go to the cinema to watch movies that i specifically wanna see there to get the best experience possible, but many films ‘like the social network’ do not fit that bracket so downloading them only serves as a try before i buy. i will buy the social network but i would never have gone to the cinema to see it. and because of that they may never have gained a sale if i hadn’t downloaded it first.
this is true of many films i now own and the same for music as well my music and dvd/bluray collection is maybe ten times what it would be if i did not download it first

    you mean.

So many filthy casuals glorifying this film just because it’s about Facebook.

People shouldn’t talk about a medium they clearly don’t understand.

People with common sense and Half a brain , understand facebook to be a terrible online database , containing lot’s of personal data.

It has an awfull method of social networking.

Eg. I have several groups of people who i regulary comunicate.

Facebook presumes , that one group is the norm. So when i comunicate to a friend , My work colegues , boss , relatives , associates ect.. , ALL get the info.

    Networking for the retarded.

    As for the film.
Contrived piece of , who gives a fuk.

Only facebook addicts AND the unknowing will wan’t to see it.

Great movie. Well worth paying 10 euros to watch at the theater and then getting your free copy off torrents!

Same here. Usually movies are out in the US long befor they appear in cinemas around Europe. And even there some countries are much later than others. When the English DVD comes out and I don’t mind the language, why would I wait 3 or 4 months till a translated version comes out?
I just order in the US or UK then. And I don’t care about your silly region shit. Or I donwload a rip and wait till the price for the DVD is decent at the software and movies pyramid.

In the information and communication era, why should anyone wait for weeks and months? That’s just silly.

For those that are unemployed or employed in a job where you don’t earn enough money to afford to go to a theatre, blame yourself for the decisions you made. It is not too late — you can still make something of yourself if you avail yourself of local opportunities.

To those with the (inherited?) morality that allows you to simply pirate movies and software, your mother and father would be proud. I’m positive your ethics will serve you well in life.

Look, I saw the movie. It ended sooner then I’d like, and all I really learned from it is Mark’s associates were all a bunch of greedy bastards. There, now you all don’t need to see the movie.

  • .

Obviously, those 100,000 people who dloaded the DVD screener have seen how good it is, immediately rushed to the cinema, to see it on the big screen and are now waiting with breath that is bated to purchase a retail DVD.
Obviously, no lost revenue there then and useful publicity as they didn’t share their dload with friends but took them to the cinema with them having borrowed a copy from the global internet library . and will, of course, purchase their friend a copy for their christmas prezzie

  • Anonymous

Fincher is a pretty good director, so I thought I’d go and see this for the sake of it. I haven’t been the cinema for quite some time, fuck paying these Illuminati cunts money to watch their propaganda. But once in awhile doesn’t hurt.

Anyway, I didn’t mind the film. I’m trying to put 1 and 1 together to get a complete understanding of Facebook and how exactly it ties into the Illuminati.

    My belief is rather simple:

Facebook is one of the (if not the most) powerful database that exists in the world. You have millions of users who submit photos, personal information (relationship, religious & political beliefs etc) onto this website. You’ve got all your friends/associates there. Your siblings/parents. Wall posts are all logged. Videos… EVERYTHING that they can gather about you personally is obtained, logged and kept permanently (you cannot delete such information).

This in itself is amazing for TPTB.

You need to understand one thing. Just say you go to http://www.google.com and search up ‘how much do the Rothschilds have’ – Google will log your IP address and that search. Then just say the elite (who own Google) want to find out who searched that up, it’s difficult since they need to go to your ISP and then from there gather the information about you which is difficult (there are laws that prevent your ISP from just handing out your info).

What they can do is this… Correlate that IP to your Facebook and boom they known a heap of things about you.

Not to mention they can use it to gather trends. What people in the USA are thinking (keywords on wall) or how many people are becoming atheists etc.

It’s beautiful, a work of art.

I think the real question is was Facebook created and then infiltrated by the elite, or was it created by the elite.

If the movie has any indication as to the nature of the creators, I’d say the elite created Facebook. I’ve heard Zuckerberg speak before and he talks like a dickhead. He is no entrepreneur. The kids in the movie represent the common sheep that walk the street. There is nothing I have seen that indicates any form of entrepreneurial talent from any of the people involved.

One of the main shareholders attends Bilderberg meetings also (guy who is affiliated with Paypal forgot his name). He probably represents Facebook since it’s kinda sus to get Zuckerberg to directly attend. Same with Bill Gates, his wife goes. Him going will spark controversy. Keep things in the dark, nothing direct.

Anyway, what I believe is this:

MySpace wasn’t part of the agenda. It was created by an entrepreneur and it ended up working, it just wasn’t that successful. It wasn’t created by the elite because Murdoch (News Corp) bought it. As long as one of the elites own something (it makes no difference which elite) it make very little difference to the people at the top (they have complete control).

Now MySpace was good and it gave them an idea. Facebook. It’s hard and a waste of time to invest time marketing a product that already exists, MySpace also focused a lot on other shit and not directly on personal (gold mine) information.

Create Facebook. Put Zuckerberg (from Harvard omg he must be smart and talented, HARVARD) in charge as a ‘front man’ and have it completely owned and run by the Illuminati. Fund it well, market it well through movies and all that other bullshit and boom you’ve got your database.

If you’re a sheep then who cares if you use that shit. But as a truth seeker I’d be wary. Especially if you’re dumb enough to start joining these ‘truth’ groups and liking people like David Icke.

Anyway, that’s what I think. If the cunt is actually worth 6.x billion I’d be fucking pissed that’s for sure. I want that kind of money. But then again he probably is, give him some $$$ to keep him quiet. Why would the Rothschilds care, they got TRILLIONS.

Also it’s important to note that the 2 biggest social networking sites, really the only 2 that people use are owned by the elite.
