World Leader in Movie Piracy Flees from the Mounties

Written by enigmax on February 12, 2008

Last month we reported that Geremi Adam, producer of some of the highest quality pirate movie copies ever seen on the Internet, had been caught and had been ordered to appear in court in January. Adam, aka ‘maVen’ had other ideas - and has disappeared.

mavenprotestBetween 2004 and 2006, Geremi Adam, delighted the movie piracy scene with some of the highest quality Telesync movies ever seen. From ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ through to ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ and plenty of other titles, the work of ‘maVen’ set a very high standard for quality pirated movies.

Following an FBI investigation into ‘maVen’, his file was handed to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in April 2006. By September of the same year, Geremi Adam was arrested by police outside a Montreal theater after ‘camming’ the movies ‘How to Eat Fried Worms’ and ‘Invincible’. They seized his laptop and other equipment but later released him. A month later he was arrested again outside another theater.

Facing a $25,000 fine and six months in jail, Geremi Adam was ordered to appear in court on 30th January. Clearly unimpressed by the prospect of being locked up and/or bankrupted, he failed to appear in court and has gone on the run.

“We have a warrant and the police officers will try to find Mr. Adam,” said federal prosecutor Yacine Agnaou in a statement. “When he is found, he will be mandated to appear in court.”

Meanwhile, outside the court a demonstration was taking place by a group calling themselves ‘Hors-d-Oeuvre’ who say that ‘maVen’ is being unfairly treated and that all media should be available on the Internet for free. “Free Geremi!” they chanted in unison.

Fortunately for Adam, he committed the alleged offenses before new tough legislation was introduced to punish movie cammers caught in Canada. He will likely escape the severe punishment of 2 years in prison, a fate awaiting fellow cammer, Louis-Rene Hache. RCMP Staff Sgt. Noel St-Hilaire said: “Unfortunately at the time there was no legislation that forbid anyone from filming in a cinema. There’s not much we could do then other than issue a warning.”

Although not turning up at court is likely to inflame the situation, it’ll be interesting to see if the mounties are prepared to put any serious effort into ‘getting their man’ in this instance.

Telesync’s can be done well.

You probably all know this but….

From wiki…

A telesync is a video copy of the movie which was shot in a cinema, often with a professional camera on a tripod in the projection booth, with a direct connection to the sound source (often FM audio provided for the hearing-impaired, or from a drive-in theatre). A telesync is a special type of cam that has the potential of better-quality audio and video. If the telesync is shot from within the projection booth there will be no keystone distortion (there will be keystone correction) of the video. An ordinary cam is usually shot with a handheld camera from a seat in the auditorium and uses the camera’s own built-in microphone to pick up the sound.

It’s good to see that the RCMP have their priorities in order…

How soon until the police will be authorized to shoot pirates on sight?

“Well gee, it LOOKED like he had a camera…”

if you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime.

With all of the more serious crimes, they chose to waste their time trying to convict this person?Justice? Only for the wealthy, all others need not apply.

Dumb. The penelty for running is worse then for filming. Why do you support a guy who knows he can get away with it yet STILL runs? Lame.

He is a hero for the people in the war against corporate rule.

34 Feb 12, 2008 at 19:25 by el

Why would he run if he wouldn’t be charged under the new camming legislation?

Why not take the opportunity to raise some important questions in a public venue (court) about the freedom of information and piracy?

People should take responsibility for their actions.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Noel St-Hilaires’ job is to enforce the law not to create new ones. Making new laws is the job of Parliament.
He was out of line by commenting

“Unfortunately at the time there was no legislation that forbid anyone from filming in a cinema. There’s not much we could do then other than issue a warning.”

I think his second time getting caught should have made the RCMp realize they can’t stop us and that they should just give up now

I can completely understand allowing civil litigation. I’m horrified that someone can lose their freedom for filming a theater screen no matter how much money the film industry loses.

What if he’s in the hospital as a John Doe.
Maybe he did run but slipped and fell, bumped his head and broke his crown?

44 Feb 12, 2008 at 22:47 by Antaries

I love these people that are calling him a pussy and saying “if you can’t do the time don’t do the crime” These are the people that sit in front of there computers 24\7 downloading movies and whatnot then, start complaining that there are not enough people seeding when a torrent just got uploaded like 2 minutes ago.

Release! Release! Release! Give them the finger by releasing another top movie and show them that you own them!

I had no idea he was Canadian, but I loved his work. One more reason Canada kicks all kinds of ass.

YO maVen … GREAT opportunity here for you. Someone stated a weee bit back … What would be funny if he released a cam while he was on the run .. DO IT .. Could make you famous .. RUN maVen RUN .. cam it as your running thru dark alley in major cities .. in the woods a night like Blair Witch .. add GREAT MUSIC for background (downloaded from FrostWire)
THE MOVIE PRODUCERS would luv it .. BIG $$$$$$s for you from them. Then they could sell rights to movie to theaters and you could go in and cam it and be first to post it on NET. STAGE6 would be good .. seeing as they are adding servers after someone hacked them and tried to mess the site up (Probably the Movie Police)
PS: if possible .. try running by a RCMP officer .. flash your camcorder and film the chase .. but make sure you RUN maVen RUN

GoodLuck BUD
