Metal Detectors and Night-Vision Goggles Now Used To Catch Pirates

Written by Ernesto on August 10, 2007

Theaters in Canada have recently started using metal detectors and night-vision goggles to track down movie cammers. In addition, theater employees receive a $500 reward for every pirate they catch. The hunt is on!

Metal Detectors and Night-Vision Goggles Now Used To Catch PiratesEarlier this year Twentieth Century Fox came to the conclusion that Canada is the home of camcorder pirates. According to their research, over 50% off all camcorder recorded movies originate from Canada. These statistics are more fiction than fact of course, but they caused a widespread panic.

Movie theaters in Canada are now taking extreme measures to cut down this figure, even if this means less comfort for their paying customers.

Serge Corriveau, Director of the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, highlighted some of the measures they’ve taken and told CBC: “Having people searching knapsacks and people going up and down the aisles once the movie’s started to see if they can spot somebody camcording. You can see also people with night-vision goggles searching through the crowd trying to see if they can find something.” Corriveau added that metal detectors will also be used in theaters across Canada, specifically for pre-screenings.

And if this isn’t enough, CMPDA have also introduced a reward program for theater employees. Catching pirates is a lucrative business now, as they can earn upto $500 CAD if they identify a person who’s trying to record a movie on his phone or camcorder. More details can be found in the “theater employee camcorder training guide“.

The theater owners sure do all they can to please their customers. A few days ago we reported about a 19 year old girl who was arrested by the police after she recorded a 20 second clip from the movie “Transformers” that she wanted to show to her little brother.

Thanks to the night-vision goggles I guess…

Meh, its no really biggie CAM’s are shit on most occasions so it wouldn’t bother me if groups stopped putting CAM out

It’s not about putting out CAMs, (or TS for that matter). It’s that they are treating paying customers in this way. The prices already show their contempt, and this just cements it.

People pay to get on airplanes, people pay to go into Disneyland. You may pay to get in, but they also pay for the film, I’m guessing they’d maybe like to protect their investment?

Aeroplanes don’t object to you bringing your own food on board. I’ve never been to disneyland, so I don’t know about them. Last time I went to a cinema, it was $10 per person for the film, and $3.50 for a coke, mostly filled with ice, and unrefillable, and they didn’t allow outside food in. That’s contempt for customers

What investment have cinema’s made in these films, pray tell…

“What investment have cinema’s made in these films, pray tell…”

It’s true that cinema’s that I know make all of their profits on concessions, but don’t most producers pay to get their movies into the cinema?

WhoGAS? I’d be happy if camming was eliminated anyway, because cam movies suck. It would clean up a lot of results in torrent searches if all that crap wasn’t there to clutter the search.

Ben Jones, Its debatable weather you purchase the movie itself when going to the theaters or your seat. I personally don’t go to the theaters i got a decent big screen and surround sound i haven’t been to the movies in almost 3 years and i don’t plan to ever go back. My point is i don’t care how they treat people its a dieing arena. What Im saying is that who really cares for CAM this is just another reason not to release them weather its your right to film it or not

OMG these greedy cinema/MPAA companies are really stupid! They are going to alienate their customers even more! Are they trying to bring about their own demise? What a bunch of tools, they really have no clue.

I hope they get sued to hell, metal detectors at the theater? Sounds like illegal search and harassment claims waiting to happen. Next up: color coded alerts for “Movie Piracy” and a Do Not Carry list for entertainment

You don’t have to put up with that crap.
Just shun those friendly “theaters” and visit the “home theater”.

If you in the mood for a full body cavity search, hop on a flight.

I’m just sick of being treated as a criminal, all because I paid to go to a movie. I’m all for protecting movies, but I will not tolerate being scrutinized during a film just because I play a game be for the movie.

For my Mother’s birthday, our family went to the local theater to watch the Born Ultimatum. Because I played my DS (like I always do) during the pre-movie BS Regal puts on, I was asked to turn in my DS for inspection. Followed by an attendant standing 10 feet away me watching my family through out the entire movie. I’m half surprised I even got my DS back.

Worth $13? Not in my life time. I will never step foot in a movie theater again. I’ve been to a movie 3 times this year, and each an every time (all different theaters) I have been treated like I just came from the state pen. My view is if they are going to treat me like a pirate, I might as well be one.

I totally agree witht the first post. cam’s an telecines are 250% retarded. I don’t know why there are people who go through the trouble of releasing them.

you know if we wait long enough the list of countries that they accuse of being the central for all cammed movies will get pretty big. They are all idiots but what ever. Everyone needs a hobby.

Thats all find and dandy, but I’m wondering how many of the CAMS and TS are actually coming from theatre employees..wish we could get those numbers…as most ppl here stated CAMS now a days are shit anyways not like they were a few years ago, even the TS are going to the shitter (nothing compared to the TS from ol’ school groups like centropy,VideoCD)I’m usally not watching anything under an R5 or telecine anyways…and those have fuck all to do with a theatre.

If they start doing something like that here, I’ll boycott the cinema.

uhm…night-vision goggles in the cinema?

i’m pretty sure 80% of the young audience goes to the movies for sex/petting/making out…..

either ppl stop going, or we’re gonna start seeing slightly more interesting ‘cinema clips’ on youtube….

either way, sweet for ppl like me who have left cinema behind along with television….
