Microsoft Claims Ownership of Linux Copyright

Written by Ernesto on February 28, 2006

In a takedown notice sent by microsoft, investigator Mr. James Young asks MyBitTorrent to remove several linux and other non-Microsoft torrents.

Among the products Microsoft didn’t like was a “Windows-to-Linux-Migration video” and NeoOffice 1.2, which is a version of OpenOffice that works native on Mac OS X.

The so called “internet investigator probably did a search on keywords like “microsoft” and “office” and didn’t even take a look at the actual torrents (probably automated).

The notice states “The information in this notice is accurate, and I hereby certify under penalty of perjury that I am authorized to act on behalf of Microsoft, the owner of the copyright(s) in the work(s) identified above. I have a good faith belief that none of the materials or activities listed above have been authorized by Microsoft, its agents, or the law.”

While sorting through the links that they demanded be removed administrators of myBitTorrent.com found themselves perplexed. Among the usual dozen or so Windows and Microsoft Office takedown requests were several for Xandros Linux, and other non-Microsoft products.

To start with myBitTorrent.com is not a torrent tracker site, rather it works similar to Google and simply caches the torrents and provides uses with a useful easy to search index of the majority of the torrents available throughout the web. Basically myBitTorrent.com provides links, to links (torrents) to files which may or may not be of copyright material, they simply have no idea of what the material is no more than Google really knows if a site or files they link to contains copyright material and/or links to copyright material.

yeah your right about the speed of windows, compared to linux….but thats because winblows isnlt looking where sets its feet down for each step of its flurried dash for faked performance, is BSOD meaning anything at this point…HELLLOOOO!

Whereas at this point the linux fire-stepper is contently reveling in that searing feeling of willpower and dominance over the digital environs around it… muwahahahaha never a BSOD ever ever ever….
oh and five billion years later, still no BSOD nor upgrade needed for stupid viruses……virus only work against each other….and windows is the other half…..work it out dudes….

oh and maybe we will have decently comparable drivers in a months time if we organise a linux-gestapo to go around to all the hardware chip-set controller manufacturers and threaten them with indutry whiteout if they dont exclusively promote and implement a linux favoured rom-bios….mmmmmm velly interlesting…

ya know there is this thing caled WINE that tears all you windows N00Bz apart cause it can run almost any windows program. and because something is easier doesnt make it better, it just makes you stupider cause you dont learn or figure naything out. linux is uneducating the masses by making a super simple OS, kind of like every tryranical/comunist/fachist country. hmmm….
and BTW linux isnt really that hard unless YOU ARE MENTALLY HANDICAPPED!! i picked up Fedora core 4 a yaer ago (1st time with linux) and set up a dual-boot enviroment immediatly. all you need is the INTERNET!!!! OMG you use google and it tells you the freakin answer to your dumass qusestion and its probably smarter than your crappy “tech-support” and if windows is so great than why does most servers use some form of UNIX that isn’t windows.

crap. i mean windows is uneduacting the masses. im using my pirated XP and i write typos like that. that is how much windows pisses me off

I only use Linux and Mac OS.

Hey Everyone,

Just want to through my two cents in. Ok, first, windows was a great thing to happen to the PC, and its ease is very impressive along with its compatability, but yes, the virus, forever-beta, and continuous sp’s are quite annoying.

As for linux, i agree, it should be dumbed-down a bit to help others learn the basics and then work into the OS. Not everyone has the time or dedication to TRY to install a copy of linux, not to mention the extra comp needed…

As for linux and unix and mac os, believe viruses and trojans are coming. This imaginary world lin(uni)x people live in is coming to an end. You have to understand that once MS copies Apple with a unix based shell, guess what boys and girls, viruses for EVERYONE! Code will be written for unix and linux, hitting servers, apple, the lin community, and of course, the target - MS toliet paper.

Yes, Unix, Linux, and the New shell for tiger will decrease to nearly prevent this from happening due to security, but people ALWAYS find a way around - look at the common place keygen.

And finally, as for the MS investigators - they can blow me! Big brother type action is NOT CONDONABLE! Take that shit somewhere.

I think the unix, linux, and apple crews need to get together - write a bad-ass security OS that are compatable with each other and windows (unfortunately) and dumb it down a little, and massive support will grow.

As for now, MS and windows are the best choice, even compared to my dual proc. G4 mac, and my linux box. Compatability, software, games, tools, hardware, sorry all, MS has been in the market too long, and i am not willing to leave just yet.

Linux is easier to install than Windows and an extra computer is not needed.
People who constantly whine about how hard to learn Linux is are not smart enough to use it.

A lot of the comments here made my damn day, some have been spot on and others terribly misinformed. To clarify, “Bitch Gates” and crew DID steal their windows 3.0-3.1 design from the Mac OS, sorry if it hurts to hear but the truth often does, so grow up & we all can move & get along. Another mistake is that installing linux is difficult, ok do us all a favor grab (REQUEST FOR FREE ON THEIR SITE) a copy of Ubuntu which comes with an install CD as well as a LIVE CD which is BOOTABLE you don’t have to install, you can “test drive & kick the tires” so to speak… If that’s too difficult and you really want to give linus a try the easiet to install I’ve seen thusfar is Mandrake [although I believe they changed their name, can't remember forgive me] After attempting one of the aforementioned procedures, please return with a proper evaluation before spewing your nonsense in an attempt to discourage the uninitiated. IMHO if you rely on the GUI too much then you are putting your intellect at risk, don’t fear the command line, it’s not just for gurus & command line junkies, it’s there for a reason & an as a resource… I’m A Mac OS, Linux, *BSD user and I find no reason for utilizing “Bitch Gates’” software as I’ve tired of viewing my digital world via cracked & broken windows which are always on the verge of shattering…

Tech support?!? Since when does tech support know anything? The first time I turned on a computer I knew more than tech support. Geesh.
No matter what the reports say, Microsoft is not scared of Mozilla Firefox.
The thing is that in today’s world we’re seeing more and more products that can work BETTER than what Microsoft has. Why is everyone using Apache as a web server? Why don’t they use the bloody IIS that comes with Windows? Because Microsoft can’t cut it anymore. THAT’S why Gates is cutting loose. He knew he played the monopoly game well enough in the past to get pushed to the top, but now freeware is pushing back. Is Microsoft scared? Maybe only a little bit now, but they soon will be.

Ubuntu + 1000s of free software = $0.
Microsoft Windows Home + headache = $199

i believe windows at the moment is better than linux because theres alot more software for windows and microsft is one huge corporation who focuses on making one os. linux is made by differant companies not all linux is the same. if linux was one company with as much money as microsoft we’d see alot more developlment and research going into linux, linux is getting more and more popular and people are starting to use linux over windows. thats prolly why bill kinda stepped out of the picture and handed the company to that creepy steve ballmer cause he prolly doesnt want to be in charge when his company falls to peices in the near future when linux takes over.

Do they own NeoOffice? What right do they have to take it down7

Ubuntu Linux is the only open source OS (that I am aware of) that is backed by big money (Canonical). If there is going to be a change from Micro$oft, it will be there….

Fuck MS

The only thing about MS that’s worth keeping is some business and finacial software and, yes, the fact that all the game publisers produce products for MS ONLY. Let’s encourage EVERYONE to buy games for Linux and Mac OS so we can break MS’s fucking software monopoly and their ZigHeil! mentality. I respectfully repeat: Fuck MS.

Okay to those of you who like windows… when you find yourself a victim of identity theft, you have no one else to blame but yourself, and your windows.
To those of you who like Linux. More power to ya, I too love Linux, it’s entertaining, and sometimes challenging. Never boring, never gets me pissed because 85% or more of viri out there is windows based. So getting a virus isn’t as easy as “click, click, click”. Linux built in firewalls are actual firewalls, not “hey lets allow remote access to your desktop, lets allow an abundance of pre-opened ports, lets not tell you about all the default passwords that if someone knows, they control your computer untill you change them, oh plus lets tell you that we are securing your computer, when in reality we are inviting hackers into your network, and into your computer.” Where with linux its not hard to configure just about anything, rather it be iptables firewalls, or SeLinux that is as simple as “click, click, click” and there you go, you have a firewall that is 10x more secure then that of windows, plus you actually get to set permissions, instead of just open ports.
Oh but wait, now we linux users get SELinux, which takes less time to set up, then it takes to set up windows vista on its first boot. Isn’t that ironic??
Oh but wait, we linux users can choose to install what we want, not what they want. We can each and every process that is installed. But with windows, as soon as its installed and booted up, you have spyware. Isn’t that ironic??
Oh but wait, we linux users; if we want to make our own pictures, all we have to do is choose to install Gimp when we install the o.s. But windows, you gotta look and look and look, and if your lucky you might stumble across a 200 dollar image design program that is just a more glamored version of Gimp. Isn’t that ironic??
Funniest thing is, we linux users, could go on and on all day, about how in reality, linux is less hasle, windows is nothing but a hasle.

to snowhow, no ubuntu has money backing it, but if anything takes over its going to most likely be Sun Microsystems.. think about it… java (a product of sun) is being incorporated into just as much as windows, we have java in our phones for fuck sakes, including phones that don’t use bullshit windows “mobile” bullshit. Plus Sun has been the leading developers in O.S. technology.. I believe it is them who incorporated an entire 3D, 360 degree 4 screen desktop. Where as no other O.S. has that great on 3d graphic rendering.
Or if not Sun, then it will be Redhat. Why? pretty simple most distributions of linux, uses Redhat for its basis.
Other then that, IBM might have a take back.
