Mininova Downtime Puts BitTorrent Sites Under Pressure

The popular BitTorrent site mininova has been down for a few hours due to hardware issues. It is expected that the downtime will continue for several hours, which puts other BitTorrent sites under pressure.

Mininova’s Erik told TorrentFreak that there are problems with the network card of the loadbalancer, one of the parts they don’t have a backup for.

The mininova team is working hard to get the site up and running again. The good news is that no data will be lost, the bad news is that it may take a while - possibly 12 hours - because it is a holiday in The Netherlands.

Mininova’s forums are not connected to the loadbalancer, and are still up and running. The same is true for the seeds of their featured content section. Mininova currently has well over 3 million unique visitors per day, and more than 15 million pageviews, which makes them the BitTorrent site with the most traffic.

Consequently, the downtime at Mininova has resulted in quite a few extra visitors for several other BitTorrent sites. Flippy, the admin of Torrentz.com told TorrentFreak that he’s seeing a 50% traffic increase, which works out at tens of thousands of visitors an hour. As a result, Flippy has had a tough time keeping his site running smoothly, and other BitTorrent site admins are reporting similar traffic boosts.

For now Torrentz is doing fine, except for a few server connection issues every now and then. It’s a pretty scary thought that server issues at mininova can almost bring down the fourth largest BitTorrent site. A whole ring of BitTorrent sites could potentially collapse like a house of cards.

update: SumoTorrent went down for 6 hours as well because the site was overloaded

I have not found anything I want on MN going back for a long time.
But I don’t look at all the torrents just the main page. (lazy on my part).

People, an increase of 200% is triple the original. For instance, if someone said that the traffic of a site increased by 100%, it’s clear that the traffic has doubled. So, using 2nd grade addition, it’s easy to see that a 200% increase is triple the original figure.

Just to clarify, what meant was triple (3x more traffic) but I was wrong we had at some point over 4x more traffic then usual. Hope we’re clear on that one ;)

seriously, all sites have a bit fo downtime every so often, this “news article” really is scraping the barrel, i mean WTF? If anyone is seriously affected by mininova downtime your need to get psychological help…try using a different fuckign site ! >_<

Ahh that’s sad cauz it’s simply the best there is whith the only decent internal search engins …all others (especially privates ones) are completly dumb search engin that give about anything execpt what you demanded …thoses should be put down forever (of course i didn’t check all there is out there so maybe the’re are some with decent stuff) witch i seriously doubt cauz they all have the same shitty search engins …even the way they put their stuff is all wrong and messy up to now i’ve only seen mininova doing things right and justto add something it would of been perfect if they could do a special section for other damn languages like damn spanish and german who are parasiting the good stuff …anyway before you say anything i’m french so yes it would be good to have a french section too …think about mininova staff ??? ok bye
