MovieX Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Written by Ernesto on December 01, 2007

The private BitTorrent tracker Moviex has been setup and configured to leech from public BitTorrent users. Through some clever modifications, their tracker allows non-members to seed to the private tracker, while downloading is forbidden.

Tip: Want to download Torrents anonymously? Try TorrentPrivacy, the only way to torrents download securely.

Moviex Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Private BitTorrent trackers are supposed to be private and for registered members only. A non-member that downloads a torrent from a private tracker will usually get a tracker connection failure in their BitTorrent client. They will not be able to download or upload any data from that torrent, rendering the torrent useless to them. This is the basis that most private trackers work upon, but not Moviex.

Lately, several people have noticed a sudden rise in torrent files being uploaded to public indexing sites like Newtorrents, Mininova, and The Pirate Bay. These uploaded torrent files contain two announce URLs, one from The Pirate Bay and a moviex.info URL that always has the same passkey present, presumably the passkey for an anonymous user.

http://www.moviex.info:2710/...3c73mdqxj31q/announce
http://vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce

To see a pirate bay tracker URL present in a torrent file is nothing out of the ordinary. So what’s special about the moviex.info URL being present in public torrents? Well, the message you get when trying to connect to the moviex.info tracker if you are not a member might give you a hint.

“Failure: access denied, leeching forbidden, you’re only allowed to seed”

Normally you would get something like: “Failure: unregistered torrent pass.” However, moviex.info allows non-members to seed files, while they are not allowed to download. This is a huge bonus for MovieX and its members. Currently, newtorrents.info provides 1000’s of downloads per day to torrent users and reportedly 50% of the available torrents on that site have the moviex.info tracker URL present, the actual percentage may even be be higher.

It is not unusual for private trackers to upload files to public sites. Most of the time this is done to advertise the tracker, so their community grows. However, we don’t see torrents like this very often, I’m not sure if they do this on purpose, but they are definitely leeching bandwidth from people who only use the public tracker. It’s a pretty nice system if you want your private tracker to gain external seeds along with faster download speeds for your members, It’s however also a very damaging method for any user who is not a member of MovieX.info as they will continually upload pieces of the torrent to users who will give very little if anything at all back.

To see exactly what this tracker configuration does and how it works watch the video below. The video shows two clear examples, one of a non seeded file and one of a seeded file using these rogue torrents, obviously for legal reasons we have renamed the torrents that I used for this demonstration (HQ download).

There is a way to prevent the leeching. If you download a torrent file from a public tracker check the tracker URL’s and remove the moviex.info announce URL if it is present. This will stop you seeding the file on that tracker and in turn not allow members of moviex.info to leech data from you. You could also try blocking their IP Address (206.53.62.206) in your IP filter if you are not a member of the MovieX community.

MovieX have taken the time to code this feature into their tracker and at the moment as far as we can tell they are the only private site exploiting this type of dirty hack to leech from external BitTorrent users. What moviex.info should do is configure their tracker not to allow external users without a passkey to connect to their tracker in any way, instead it would seem they have deliberately setup to leech as much data from the public BitTorrent community as possible and boost their own private community speeds. MovieX deny this is the case and claim these torrents to be no more than simple advertising for the site in an attempt to attract new members?

Update: MovieX is now blocked by PeerGuardian, a simple solution is to download and install the application.

Thanks Stuart!

I think I’ll take “foul and unpleasant languge” over… whatever language you were trying to write in.

Shame on you all for condemning MovieX here solely because someone tries to make up a cheesy headline in a blog/news page. Even in the so called movie that should proof that MovieX users are “leeching” from the “community”, there is no real proof that a MovieX registered user is loading from a public tracker user.

Proof is not something that a tracker replies! Maybe the next message you get is “Error, you are not allowed to load because you are a leecher!”! So as everybody here takes a servermessage for real you all are leechers even if you share 5:1?

Seems not every message is totally right. Fire up your brains and think a bit. So called headlines and news may be not that right. Does anybody of you guys ever look into your statistics? It’s interesting… seeing a so called seeder with a 1gig torrent at 40% that has uploaded 40gig to the tracker. I bet you guys think that ratio cheating is something anybody does, right? No problem at all.

How often do I see a “Seeds please” in publictracker-comments? Quiet often! Where are the so called seeders that are crying out loud here?
How often do I find a torrent on public trackers that have a demonoid tracker-URL and are not seeded at all on a public-tracker. Dead torrents all the way.

Not a word that a MovieX user is seeding on a public tracker out of fun if there is need… no… they are leeching…never seeding… never helping you guys out if a torrent is dead they initiated first on their site and copied it to a publictracker seeding it there. Grab your own noses you so called seeders and seed more… you have to provide balance for the other 70% of the bittorrent community that stop their torrent when they have finished leeching with 200kbit with a cheated ratio.

Seems to me like another “Sun” headline… “Baby drinks milk from it’s mother! That must be stopped!”

Shame on you all! At least try to be a community.
Stabbing others backs while the MPAA shoots at you all!

228 Dec 04, 2007 at 19:28 by Sad_about_such_a_community

PS: Two things to think about in that video of proof… starting the “seeded” torrent with both trackers… why not resetting the peerlist after deleting the public tracker?
Who says these leechers tranmitted by the MovieX guesttracker are not other ppl using the public torrent and the guesttracker too? Are these really MovieX registered users? As far as I know these registered users have totally different torrents… these external ones do not even work for them. Questions over questions… all unanswered… but sure, must be right! Is a headline in the news. Can’t be wrong!

Somo, sorry, I am what can only be described as a Brooklynite. When one is shat on, we tend to use everything in our range of expression. Much of the fouler descriptives I learned at a young age.

Also what does my share ratio have to do with the price of tea in China?
I seed at least what I download, I tend to have a better ratio than 1 to 1. The only time that I don’t is when I DL something that no one else wants. Time wise, I tend to keep the things on for months.

Now, back to the topic. “We” (I didn’t use the term royal, but rather untermensch/plebs to describe us) are the ilk who go about downloading songs, movies, books, etc ad nausium and who don’t act like cunts. We are the lot who don’t look to suck the bandwidth out of people instead of sharing the files (well, they share, but not to the slow kids, I.E., us). We are the ilk that those at MovieX, et al seemingly want nothing to do with, except if they can exploit us.

One last thing, does part of that “disgusting behavior” involve being in a high tower looking down on we common untermensch?

you blind followers of this garbage are tools. you read something someone posts and you just believe it. 90pct of you think you understand how our system is set up to work. and the same amount of people think they really know alot about bittorrent protocols and tracker workings. i guess all of you must be experts then huh.

bunch of freaking cry babies i swear. booohooo. as ive said before, if our co founder lober stopped posting his content on all the other sites he does and kept it to within moviex. you all would be PISSED then. crying a river because you had to wait longer till someone else made the post.

oh noez! you found out our uber secret location of where our domain name is hosted! oh no!

you guys love jumping on the bandwagon and running your traps about crap to which you dont really know. you see a freakin tracker error message and take it to heart. if you wanna bitch and complain - go and start paying for your movies/games/music then come back and tell me was it worth it
I’m a big fan of Internet Rights.

First of all, there is the fact that the MPAA and RIAA are trying to keep their dying oligopoly on top by refusing to adopt new technology, which is the entire foundation of capitalism. Improvisation leads to Profits, and they are quite frankly completely stifling any technology, for fear of losing gigantic profit margins. P2P is the only way until we have a nice compromise between consumers and firms.

However, I will under no circumstances back a site like MovieX. You see, MovieX is quite like the Asian street sellers who sell bootlegged movies, for profit. Of course they tell you, they have to pay the cost of the video tape and the camera and the risk, but all in all, that does not justify the 12 dollars you just spent. Just like donating 6 dollars monthly is ridiculous. I am not a person to make ludicrous accusations, but I have heard AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN how you get banned from MovieX if you do not donate, DESPITE you keeping the share ration up.

Now I will move on to how MovieX is the bane of the BT community. Implying that a keystone of BT websites like PB would be mush without MoviesX is delusional. TBP was fine before MovieX, and will be fine when we all block all of their trackers, ON ALL TORRENTS THEY LEECH.

Saying that a public tracker is filled with hit and runners is laughable. If that were the case, you wouldn’t have sites dedicated to BT where users come to congregate and discuss a much loved technology. A technology that is loved by most for its ease of use and lack of greedy mongrels.

Rama you will try to deflect all attacks on the financial situation of your site, but it is impossible to hide that out of 230,000 members, hundreds, if not thousands, donate to a technology you did not create, donate for you to abuse other sites for them, donate to line your fat-cat pockets.

You can throw around the words stupid and dumb, but who here spells like a 11 year old Taiwanese girl? Yeah, you.

Seeing as I’m an economics major, I’m intrigued, how similar would your profit pie be compared to the profit pie of nations that impose tariffs on imported items? I’m guessing excruciatingly alike.

In conclusion I’ve never signed up for MoviesX, because I have enough friends, about 4 who have told me how they got banned even with seed ratios over 1:1. Go fuck yourself, you’re getting in the way of our fight for Internet Rights.

“Update: in response to our article, MovieX decided to allow guest on their tracker for now. So, everyone is allowed on their tracker, however, they plan to limit the number of guests in the near future.”

We at Bluetack have removed the block for their tracker for the time being, as the situation where non-members are only able to seed using their tracker has been remedied. I wanted people to be aware of this so people wanting to continue to block them would not be caught off guard. This change will be seen in the update of our lists later today.

I was assured that the part about limiting guests in the near future is not true. If this does occur and non-member seeds are once again being exploited for the benefit of their private site, they will be blocked again. I made this very clear to their representative I talked with this morning on IRC. I hope this does not become necessary, but we at Bluetack would like to hear about it if they return to this former practice.
Fileshareing should be about community, transparency, and the freedom of information. Download protocol should come from common courtesy, the willingness to help other as you may have been helped. Sure there are a few hit-and-runners, but overall it works because people want it to work, otherwise all the public trackers would be toast by now. Once you move away from open source, require money, or begin to impose strict limitations on user interaction, you lose the foundation which this community was built on.

Things like sale-for-profit pirating being done by MovieX:

“”Subscription Packages”” (their words not mine)

1 Month Access ( $6.00 )

3 Months Access ( $12.00, Save $6 )

5 Months Access ( $15.00, Save $15 )

7 Months Access ( $25.00, Save $17 )

9 Months Access ( $35.00, Save $19 )

12 Months Access ( $42.00, Save $30 )

24 Months Access ( $60.00, Save $84 )

>bullshit. die X.
Well, I hate to come in here and stand on peoples feet, but assuming that the .torrent file which movieX members download contains the TPB tracker too, it’s still a perfectly normal exchange.

When all modern torrent clients start a download, they’ll get peers from all of the available trackers. This means that movieX members will see all of the non-members through the TPB tracker.

Once a torrent client has identified a peer, there is _NOTHING_ in the bittorrent protocol (and specificially in the tracker specification) which allows a tracker to stop a movieX member from uploading to a non-movieX member.

The _ONLY_ control which the tracker has is the ability to hide peers from each other, but as there is a second tracker anyway, this is irrelevant.

Also, once you add in DHT, which most of the private tracker members probably have enabled anyway, you can bypass the restriction anyway.

Yawn..
i have been removing moviex announce URL since the beginning, some months ago i tried to alert about these leechers to TPB:
http://suprbay.org/showthread.php?t=3313

their answer? if youa re smart you will remove their URL, if you are a noob then it doesnt matter because you are noob
WHat they dont understand is that they are “stealing” download speed from the noob seeds that could go to TPB leeches instead of the moviex leeches.

239 Dec 05, 2007 at 20:22 by Dansker

Idiots, all I see is ignorancy. Or another attempt for an organised attack from antiP2P towards moviex.

Let me make it clear for restards here.

If you want to be VIP member of moviex, then you have to pay. Let me remind you that TPB does the same unless you’re a super uploader.

When I use Moviex, I download a file within minutes ( I DON’T HAVE VIP OR PAY ANYTHING SINCE IT’S ALL FREE ). My download upload ratio is good.

Those who are complaining about MOVIEX are people who doesn’t want to seed or people from ANTIP2P.

I think the moviex fan girls here need to look up what Private means in the dictionary. MovieX abusing it. It’s simple. Private tracker = members only seed and leech. MovieX abuse = members only leech. Everyone else seed.

Come to think of it MovieX is the leech.
