MovieX Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Written by Ernesto on December 01, 2007

The private BitTorrent tracker Moviex has been setup and configured to leech from public BitTorrent users. Through some clever modifications, their tracker allows non-members to seed to the private tracker, while downloading is forbidden.

Tip: Want to download Torrents anonymously? Try TorrentPrivacy, the only way to torrents download securely.

Moviex Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Private BitTorrent trackers are supposed to be private and for registered members only. A non-member that downloads a torrent from a private tracker will usually get a tracker connection failure in their BitTorrent client. They will not be able to download or upload any data from that torrent, rendering the torrent useless to them. This is the basis that most private trackers work upon, but not Moviex.

Lately, several people have noticed a sudden rise in torrent files being uploaded to public indexing sites like Newtorrents, Mininova, and The Pirate Bay. These uploaded torrent files contain two announce URLs, one from The Pirate Bay and a moviex.info URL that always has the same passkey present, presumably the passkey for an anonymous user.

http://www.moviex.info:2710/...3c73mdqxj31q/announce
http://vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce

To see a pirate bay tracker URL present in a torrent file is nothing out of the ordinary. So what’s special about the moviex.info URL being present in public torrents? Well, the message you get when trying to connect to the moviex.info tracker if you are not a member might give you a hint.

“Failure: access denied, leeching forbidden, you’re only allowed to seed”

Normally you would get something like: “Failure: unregistered torrent pass.” However, moviex.info allows non-members to seed files, while they are not allowed to download. This is a huge bonus for MovieX and its members. Currently, newtorrents.info provides 1000’s of downloads per day to torrent users and reportedly 50% of the available torrents on that site have the moviex.info tracker URL present, the actual percentage may even be be higher.

It is not unusual for private trackers to upload files to public sites. Most of the time this is done to advertise the tracker, so their community grows. However, we don’t see torrents like this very often, I’m not sure if they do this on purpose, but they are definitely leeching bandwidth from people who only use the public tracker. It’s a pretty nice system if you want your private tracker to gain external seeds along with faster download speeds for your members, It’s however also a very damaging method for any user who is not a member of MovieX.info as they will continually upload pieces of the torrent to users who will give very little if anything at all back.

To see exactly what this tracker configuration does and how it works watch the video below. The video shows two clear examples, one of a non seeded file and one of a seeded file using these rogue torrents, obviously for legal reasons we have renamed the torrents that I used for this demonstration (HQ download).

There is a way to prevent the leeching. If you download a torrent file from a public tracker check the tracker URL’s and remove the moviex.info announce URL if it is present. This will stop you seeding the file on that tracker and in turn not allow members of moviex.info to leech data from you. You could also try blocking their IP Address (206.53.62.206) in your IP filter if you are not a member of the MovieX community.

MovieX have taken the time to code this feature into their tracker and at the moment as far as we can tell they are the only private site exploiting this type of dirty hack to leech from external BitTorrent users. What moviex.info should do is configure their tracker not to allow external users without a passkey to connect to their tracker in any way, instead it would seem they have deliberately setup to leech as much data from the public BitTorrent community as possible and boost their own private community speeds. MovieX deny this is the case and claim these torrents to be no more than simple advertising for the site in an attempt to attract new members?

Update: MovieX is now blocked by PeerGuardian, a simple solution is to download and install the application.

Thanks Stuart!

Seems we will have to treat moviex like another germ, what there doing is wrong, if you give, you take, if you take, you give.

50/50, thats how it is, thats how it will always be. Fuck you if you do otherwise.

I have been a member of MovieX for some time now. This is the first time I am hearing of this. Its disgusting. I mean, you dont allow people to leech from you, but to leech from them is all dandy. It should be both ways or no way. I stopped using this site quite a while back. For some reason your download slows down near the end despite there already being a karge number of seeders for a file.

Yeah, I noticed this one a while back

“If you download a torrent file from a public tracker check the tracker URL’s and remove the moviex.info announce URL ”

Yup

lol i thought every one already knew that i mean its kind of obvious

after you register your new official private torrent from the site only dls and uls from moviex members…the outsiders can only download from the outsiders and the original seedbox

see for yourself …obviously you need hands on experience and direct contact with the site and its operation to know how it functions, not some third party biased opinion

Check the Slyck.com post of this article…all is explained…by an Admin…you guys asked for it, now you got it.

Looks like the PG2 has updated their blocklist to include moviex ::: Yippeee!!!

Clearly this is the way moviex looks at it… More seeders = bad ratio for moviex leechers = more vip for gigs = more money…

My suggestion would be everyone download PG2 and start banning them

Before making such claims i suggest you read my post

authors of this false claims owe us an apology

clearly you’re kinda retarded. oh look at our horrible leeching tracker ratio we have. oh noez we download soooooo much data and never seed back - we are a leech on the BT community oh pls pls help

Data Transferred: We have tracked 7783.44 TB in uploads & 754.63 TB in downloads totalling 8538.07 TB
Total: We are tracking a total of in 21716 torrents totaling 838279 files
Share ratio: The current seeder to peer ratio is 27.95

One some private trackers its all about the money. You rarely get the chance to seed, but you can buy download ratio, this is called a “donation”. Mention this on their forum, they tell you to shut up or get banned. Nice community. Think for yourself.

Private trackers are evil! An exclusive enclave of people doing what everyone should have access to. I remove any non-functioning tracker from a torrent file just for the sake of doing so; but now that it’s clear why all these torrents have movieX latched onto them.. well. Let’s just say I was doing the right thing to begin with.

No wonder MovieX grew in a short period of time. Its been less than one year since it has started.

MovieX seems to be timing out now.

At least for me…

yeah that’s a load of crap. i know the guy who is responsible for all of that and he seeds hundreds of public torrents every day on 100 Mbit connection - something noone else would probably do on such a long term period of time. you should be thankful for all the files he uploads just minites within the pre and not bitch about it…

41 Dec 01, 2007 at 11:42 by d_bo

our site isnt that “exclusive” considering we’ve had our registrations open now for months. no need to trade invites or beg for them to get in. all you do is show up and join lol.

the person who began this crap over at p2pvine - just doesnt understand how our system is setup. and makes assumptions based on default type tracker error return messages. ya tard

I only use public trackers and I’ve seen this message from moviex trackers for some time now. Frankly, although I guess I can understand why some would be upset, it doesn’t bother me at all. I really don’t care if moviex members are leeching the file from me even though I can’t leech from them. I don’t care who leeches from me; I only care about completing the torrents I want and sharing them with the community, wherever those people in the community choose to be. I share all torrents until they have at least a 2-to-1 up/down ratio. It’s the least I can do since I never create torrents for people, only download and share torrents others have created. The biggest problem I have with bittorrent is the whole shadowy, pseudo-hackerish, greedy, ‘l33t’ crap with private networks and the like. Eventually, all that will probably be the downfall of bittorent. It would all “just work” if people stopped worrying and shared. But for whatever reasons — greed, ego, vanity, childishness, etc. — people have to make things so much more complicated than they need to be.

Well, I hate to come in here and stand on peoples feet, but assuming that the .torrent file which movieX members download contains the TPB tracker too, it’s still a perfectly normal exchange.

When all modern torrent clients start a download, they’ll get peers from all of the available trackers. This means that movieX members will see all of the non-members through the TPB tracker.

Once a torrent client has identified a peer, there is _NOTHING_ in the bittorrent protocol (and specificially in the tracker specification) which allows a tracker to stop a movieX member from uploading to a non-movieX member.

The _ONLY_ control which the tracker has is the ability to hide peers from each other, but as there is a second tracker anyway, this is irrelevant.

Also, once you add in DHT, which most of the private tracker members probably have enabled anyway, you can bypass the restriction anyway.

Yawn..

its just another way the private sites rape the bittorrent community for their own needs.

they are not sharers they are leechers.
could this be because their members dont seed shit so they have to rape the bittorrent community to keep their crappy site going!

private sites are the pits.

they say they are part of the community but this just proves that they only want the community for their own needs.
Easy to solve. Become a member of moviex.
Even easier to solve: delete the moviex-url from the announce-list.

moviex are wankers

47 Dec 01, 2007 at 13:10 by Phishybongwaters

wow,I’ve been talking about this for months, seriously, months.

Beating my chest, whining to no avail.

Finally someone else has seen the light.

MovieX is stealing seeds from public sites, and spamming their site from within torrents.

Simple as that.

You connect to one of those torrents, DHT is disabled of course, and this is how it works.

You download pathetically slow from tpb always offline tracker, and seed back to private moviex members who DON’T SHARE A DAMN KILOBYTE WITH YOU.

All your peer spots in your client get filled with leeches from movieX that DON’T seed back to the public torrent.

Anyone thinking this is good, just doesn’t understand how this all works.

48 Dec 01, 2007 at 13:22 by FUK MOVIEX

It is simple, REMOVE THE MovieX tracker from ALL your downloads containing it. You will connect to only real-time sharers. I’ve been doing it since MovieX starting spreading its filthy tracker around.

This uploader of these trackers is anything but a good person. HE is NOT a bot. HE is only interested in raising donations for his MovieX site.

This type of slime should be banned from torrents sites everywhere

And RSLOG also benefits from this creep, they are just as slimy…

NICE ONE Torrentfreak, you should stay on this one. ITS BULLSHITE.

lol to the post above me, you was on release log pandering the same copied and pasted text spamming your moviex hate crap - its easy to tell you’re a moron huh

How does one remove a tracker from a torrent? What program do you use?
