MovieX Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Written by Ernesto on December 01, 2007

The private BitTorrent tracker Moviex has been setup and configured to leech from public BitTorrent users. Through some clever modifications, their tracker allows non-members to seed to the private tracker, while downloading is forbidden.

Tip: Want to download Torrents anonymously? Try TorrentPrivacy, the only way to torrents download securely.

Moviex Leeches From The BitTorrent Community

Private BitTorrent trackers are supposed to be private and for registered members only. A non-member that downloads a torrent from a private tracker will usually get a tracker connection failure in their BitTorrent client. They will not be able to download or upload any data from that torrent, rendering the torrent useless to them. This is the basis that most private trackers work upon, but not Moviex.

Lately, several people have noticed a sudden rise in torrent files being uploaded to public indexing sites like Newtorrents, Mininova, and The Pirate Bay. These uploaded torrent files contain two announce URLs, one from The Pirate Bay and a moviex.info URL that always has the same passkey present, presumably the passkey for an anonymous user.

http://www.moviex.info:2710/...3c73mdqxj31q/announce
http://vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce

To see a pirate bay tracker URL present in a torrent file is nothing out of the ordinary. So what’s special about the moviex.info URL being present in public torrents? Well, the message you get when trying to connect to the moviex.info tracker if you are not a member might give you a hint.

“Failure: access denied, leeching forbidden, you’re only allowed to seed”

Normally you would get something like: “Failure: unregistered torrent pass.” However, moviex.info allows non-members to seed files, while they are not allowed to download. This is a huge bonus for MovieX and its members. Currently, newtorrents.info provides 1000’s of downloads per day to torrent users and reportedly 50% of the available torrents on that site have the moviex.info tracker URL present, the actual percentage may even be be higher.

It is not unusual for private trackers to upload files to public sites. Most of the time this is done to advertise the tracker, so their community grows. However, we don’t see torrents like this very often, I’m not sure if they do this on purpose, but they are definitely leeching bandwidth from people who only use the public tracker. It’s a pretty nice system if you want your private tracker to gain external seeds along with faster download speeds for your members, It’s however also a very damaging method for any user who is not a member of MovieX.info as they will continually upload pieces of the torrent to users who will give very little if anything at all back.

To see exactly what this tracker configuration does and how it works watch the video below. The video shows two clear examples, one of a non seeded file and one of a seeded file using these rogue torrents, obviously for legal reasons we have renamed the torrents that I used for this demonstration (HQ download).

There is a way to prevent the leeching. If you download a torrent file from a public tracker check the tracker URL’s and remove the moviex.info announce URL if it is present. This will stop you seeding the file on that tracker and in turn not allow members of moviex.info to leech data from you. You could also try blocking their IP Address (206.53.62.206) in your IP filter if you are not a member of the MovieX community.

MovieX have taken the time to code this feature into their tracker and at the moment as far as we can tell they are the only private site exploiting this type of dirty hack to leech from external BitTorrent users. What moviex.info should do is configure their tracker not to allow external users without a passkey to connect to their tracker in any way, instead it would seem they have deliberately setup to leech as much data from the public BitTorrent community as possible and boost their own private community speeds. MovieX deny this is the case and claim these torrents to be no more than simple advertising for the site in an attempt to attract new members?

Update: MovieX is now blocked by PeerGuardian, a simple solution is to download and install the application.

Thanks Stuart!

Everyone needs to keep in mind, with all of these torrents you will EVENTUALLY complete your download, in some cases (tpb tracker willing) you won’t even notice any slowdown.

The problem really impacts people with shitty connections/routers or improperly configured clients.

Aswell if you are running vista or XP sp2, you are limited to 10 tcp connections unless you patch you tcpip.sys.

For those people, having the majority of their peer slots taken with LEECHES from movieX, means slower downloads.

Torrent sessions work on the basis, the faster you send, the faster you will be able to download. Your clients also make their connections to peers and maintain them on a similar basis.

If client A can send really fast to client B, client B’s torrentapp will favour that connection for seeding to, rather than a connection that responds slowly.

Now, if client A’s slots are all taken up with leeches from movieX, ClientB (seeder on TPB tracker) will not always want to maintain that connection.

This is exactly what’s happening.

MovieX contributing to the swarms? Yes, contributing LEECHES, only members can actually download from that tracker, they are only uploading back to private members.

They are taking B/W from the public swarm uploads, and not returning any uploads.

They complain about hit and run leechers? I’ve got 7 fucking terrabytes uploaded at torrent leech, so suck that. The only hit and run leeching bastards here would be the movieX members downloading from the public swarms seeds and NOT uploading a single kb back to the public swarm.

Works out great for movieX members, screws over the public swarm pretty bad.

You can send all the movieX fanboys here you want trying to explain away the fact they are the hit and run leechers.

Atleast the standard hit and run public user UPLOADED during his session, instead of downloading and capping his upload to 0k.

If I start using a hacked client at MovieX that lets me download without uploading anything, would I not be banned?

EXACTLY

“yes its free to register and its free to stay, just give back a little of what you take. STOP HITTING AND RUNNING YOU leeching scums who just want to leech and go away without following any rules”

Direct that at the movieX leeches, as THEY are the ones entering the swarm, downloading from public seeds and NOT sending anything back.

All the sites, private or not must impose a seed ratio of 1 or more. That would be the end of hit and runners and they know it! That’s why they bring the “interest of the community” in discussion. The real interest of the community is to get read of hit and runners, not to give them breading space! MovieX FTW!

That’s not technically possible for public trackers.

Essentially they are using The Pirate Bay to ‘get rich quick’.

This should not be tolerable under any circumstances. No ones jealous of MovieX, far from it, what MovieX is doing to the public community is plain wrong.

82 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:05 by Rama

can you please advise me, WERE does it say U HAVE TO PAY?

ITS A FREE SITE, LET ME REPEAT ITS A FREE SITE

Stop making up lame rumors about us.

We have put up so many torrents on TPB and seeded them to the public, please advise how this is wrong? SEEDING TO THE PUBLIC IS WRONG?

we were merely advertising our website.

Get over it, what do you want us to do? get rid of our rules? sure go to every private torrent site and tell them that

ITS FREE TO REGISTER AND ITS FREE TO USE.

unlike every other private torrent site, we keep registrations open as we want to share, not keep members out

its clear to see you have no read any of the official statements by the MovieX founders.

Get to know the system, do some research, stop making rumors.

Any torrent site taking subscriptions should be taken down, seriously thats REAL pirating, thats like selling burned CDs on the streets for profit, thats the kind of piracy you get several years in prison from, not “internet piracy” witch is the game we torrent kids are playing.

We “internet” pirates do not pirate for profits, to save money sure but absolutely not for profit making!
Internet pirates are not criminals in that way, as we share and dont resell, thats why we have been able to keep P2P going for all these years, if we would have done it for profit we would all be in jail and P2P would be dead before it even started.

MovieX are doing something very very wrong here.
If they do indeed have subscriptions then they are real pirates and not just internet pirates like the rest of us torrent users and site owners are (or claim to be, or not to be).

Profiting on others is NOT ok, thats REAL damage, and subscription is paying for, any court will see that as paying for site content, witch is stolen.

giving away stolen stuff for free is alot different then charging for stolen stuff, then theres still the issue of the stolen stuff itself but thats another story and copyright law thats faulty (imo ;)).

IF MovieX did NOT mean for this, they should change it to “Monthly donations” instead of subscription, that would solve alot of problems and future trouble, as there would be alot of trouble heading their way if they keep subscription.

donate = give away
subscribe = pay for (the problem that makes it so serious, and it realy is)

MovieX is a scam. It’s so obvious that it’s just a way for the site owner to make tons of money.

They deserve to be turned in to the authorities, for profiteering from piracy, which is basically the ultimate sin from piracy (to not only steal, but to PROFIT from stealing).

85 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:16 by Rama

Who said it was a subscription?

PEOPLE are donating to us, we never asked for any money

you guys are acting like we are selling movies..

if u donate, sure you will get something better a quicker download…. no waits…

stop being hypocrites.. u all download illegal stuff and then give shit to illegal websites?

we are not charging anyone, or forcing anyone to pay, people donate on their own free will like any other private torrent site…..

I completely agree.

87 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:28 by UncertainGod

How is this news, I’ve watched torrents do that for a while, the moviex tracker always gets removed from a torrent I might pick up.

88 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:28 by MovieX FTW!

Battlestar.Galactica.Razor.UNRATED.EXTENDED.2007.DVDRip.XviD-WAT

just released!

I wonder who is gonna leech from who: MovieX users from TPB users or the other way around !

89 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:42 by supreme

For the moment only loder has Battlestar UNRATED on TPB so I guess it’s safe to say that TPB users are leeching from MovieX users and not the other way around, lol, Ernesto, lol!

90 Dec 01, 2007 at 18:45 by DownWithMoviex!

Down with Moviex!! Down with TPB!! These people who run these sites make anywhere from 50 bux a day to hundreds a day just from running tiny ads. This is on top of their membership fees. Join a REAL private site, that’s free and doesn’t rip off the noobs and dummies on the public trackers, it’s not their fault they don’t know any better!!

Why don’t you come onto the forums and filter out the VIP members

you will see my figures are correct

stop talking trash

fix your attitude

You know absolutely squat about us, and yet you comment on us like you have been a member before

I laugh at your stupidity

94 Dec 01, 2007 at 19:08 by mGiB

I see no issue in this at all you guys are crazy. Thx rama and movieX for even providing this stuff to a public tracker you all need to learn to love scene trickle down not hate it ;)
I laugh at your stupidity
You’re the one saying that just because one of your uploaders uploads a torrent to TPB that the rest of your members can leech off it…

96 Dec 01, 2007 at 19:14 by Kill All Leachers 4 A Better Worls

To make clear to all of you, assholes:

1. The only way you can get a torrent with the movieX tracker from a public site (like TPB) is if movieX (aka loder) is uploading that torrent to that public site. Is not taking, is giving, you know the difference?

2. If you have no movieX tracker in your torrent that torrent is not uploaded by movieX and you are not gonna be raped by the bad movieX guys, go back to sleep.

3. Ernesto was drunk when has written this article. How can movieX take from a public site something that is giving to that site in the first place!

Nicely put. Anyway to go about reporting a site like this?

98 Dec 01, 2007 at 19:55 by Anonymous

lol all you people saying movieX is about the money are retarded its easy as hell to get your ratio up on that site. you idiots should be thank full that they’re even providing that stuff to public trackers
you idiots should be thank full that they’re even providing that stuff to public trackers
You do realize the reason “loder” attempts to upload torrents as early as possible is to -capitalize- on the seeds at TPB as long as possible? That is whole idea of the scam! If he isn’t the fastest uploader the scam doesn’t work, people will go to other NON-SCAM torrents instead.

There’s nothing altruistic about fighting to maintain your scam. Seriously.
Moviex sucks. I noticed this long time ago but didnt know who to tell about this.

Anyway, if you want to get/give/trade invites for some better trackers, check this site:
http://tracker-invites.org/index.php?referredby=1767/quote

hopefully you know that trading invites is fobidden on most sites just like trading/selling yer accounts.

all you do is drawing unwanted attention from strangers that dont belong there that are banned before because of cheating or other crap that or trading accounts etc. or worse, like the coppers, so that there will be yet another raid and yet another few persons behind bars.

all because yer nothing more than a retarded egocentrical dumbfuck that truly deserves the predicate P2P-LAMER!
please fuck off bigtime and go grow up and make some 1337 friends to get invites to better sites ofso instead of being a sad wanker retard like knoeki, axxo or any other craphole that cant even change his own pants and needs to steal his shit from aniwhere, even invites
