Thats good to hear that the case on DVDr-core and Alex seems to be dropped.
I used to speak to Alex on the matter as my own site CDDVDHeaven went through the same things and to be honest i also have not heard anything as to the case against myself and the site.
I had loads of paper work for the first year and slowly died off to nothing for many many months now.
Where as Alex seemed to have pulled away from the torrent scene and no longer runs such a site to my knowledge i carried on and moved the site to a much more liberal country and have been running it from there since the forced close down of CDDVDHeaven Thu May 12, 2005 10:08 pm as reported here at the time.

As Alex has said the letters we got were very exaggerated and full of threats, One the very first time i contacted them i was told i had to accept full resonsablity for what was on the site at the time and accept that i was the one breaking the law even though at no time did the site host the files they suggested i did.
I stopped all talks to them and just filled all letters i got away for safe keeping and just ignored them…

The only thing i wont be doing is going to the USA at any time soon without first finding out if anything would happen if i did take a holiday there.The last thing i would want is find i’m arrested as soon as i landed in the USA.

The MP@@ seem to be all Mouth And No Teeth in my own veiw and the fact that the DVDr-core case seems to have gone the same way suggest such a thing.

I think that prosecuting these people for what is bascially a search engine is a bad idea.
Bittorrent is just begining to find commercial applications and is a very useful protocol. The few pirates again have again burdened all of us with onerous restrictions. Games with copy protection, Protected video streams integrated into Vista that require more powerful machines, Music that can’t be easily be used with another device.
Eventually, there will be a more convenient way to reimburse the people that create the things we all enjoy. Torrents will allow anyone with talent to distribute.
A more powerful shift than Gutenberg’s movable type.
Keep the internet democratic.

I hope so. At least the law will adapt to a point where the popular outrage about illegal MAFIAA practises is kept in check by the popular outrage about file sharing.

Otherwise the legal system would make itself superfluous. Imagine, millions of file sharers wouldn’t care about copyright. Copyright would become as useless as yesterdays newspaper. Well, with yesterdays newspaper you could at least build a pinata and bash the candy out of it.

He did not hide but instead put his case to the public.

His case motivated me to try to do something different in p2p.

I developed a web based p2p where you connect to a few friends but can download from everyone.

Personally, I think that Mr. Hanff should sue the people who sent him those letters. If they have now dropped the case (basically admitting that they did not have enough evidence to proceed), he should get SOME satisfaction out of them, considering that the case lead to him losing his job.

Personally, I thought that it was illegal in Europe (at least most countries) to dismiss someone without ‘good cause’, i.e. that they haven’t met your expectations on the job or have stolen something from you.

Is this guy certain that the case was dropped and that the MPAA is unable to pursue the case any further?

It would have been wiser to lay low and just be thankful that they lost interest for whatever reason. Now that he is making waves again, the MPAA might pursue it just to prevent anyone from getting the idea that they are letting cases split through the cracks.

Its now been cleared.

We check the moderation queue every so often, so it can be an hour or two. Generaly, the system setup does a fairly good job at keeping spam off the comments, but when it’s not sure, it flags it for moderation. Better that than drowning in spam, I’d have thought, even if it does mean your comments can be delayed. nevertheless, when approved, it goes where it would have had it not been held up (hence the fool with his first post, actually being 3rd)
