Only one person who complained about ‘execesive’ tax for local movie, which for me it means he’s just making an excuse for the poor stuff he called ‘movie’.

At one of the source I’ve read, basically it said that they will reduce tax from Indonesia movie, and raise tax for the foreign movie… which is still make no sense to me at all.

I agree with you that our local films won’t even stand as D grade for Holywood Movies. It’s just like (worse than) amateur softcore movies put to cinema.

actually the most interesting part is missing here… the tax is not only to “reduce” mpaa’s dough but the main reason behind this is because Hollywood is simply too “holy shit!” for local films to compete against them, one reason cited is because the local production of movies are by itself burdened by many tax and permits (of which each permits will requires some sort of fee)

and so, the ingenious people of the Indonesian Tax dept comes up with the very bright idea that instead of making concession for local producers they simply (make more) tax the other guy (before this, the mpaa is not without any tax for bringing the movie to indonesia) and thus the local producers feels they finally can make their crappy movie a blockbusters, the mpaa is pissed off and the tax guy got double income leaving the rest of indonesian watching shit loads of worse than hannah montanah’s show on their premier weekends LOL

our local films are so bad, i will not even consider a pirated local movies dvd’s to be used as my teacup saucer, they are just too much of an eyesore to me.. an example of man’s finest idiocracy at its peak.

Just litle update. Right now the Tax Officer countering the MPAA saying that MPAA haven’t paid the tax for several years………. So according to them, the tax already been there for years, it’s just MPAA neglected to pay them.

Which is a litle weird, considering it’s a difference reply from before (When they blame MPAA to ‘out’ the tax, while the discussion hasn’t ended yet). And it took a week to provide this argument.

Its alright… Not like the US is producing all that much quality movies now…. Just about every time I see a new movie being released lately its a remake of either a cartoon I watched as a kid (Yogi Bear, Smufs, etc), an old story (Little Red Riding Hood), a board game (They’re making a Monopoly and a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie?!?) or comic book adaptations (GI Joe, X-Men)

So maybe it could be nice to encourage the Indonesian Hollywood to start producing more of its own material…. Maybe get some new ideas flowing… Rather than just putting a new facade on some old movies & complaining when everyone pirates them instead of spending 7+ bucks per person to see them in the theater….

On a side note, how would they tax a digital cinema?

Even though the reasoning for the tax may be lame and the money will end up feeding the corruption, the idea of taxing foreign movies is actually good. We have to agree that MAFIAA stuff doesn’t really encourage local productions…

Actually it makes sense. Every imports pay taxes, why should movies be exempted? MAFIAA is just moaning because they’ll need to reduce their profit margins to remain competitive with local movies. Then so be it, begone and while you are at that just die already and let the world have peace.

It does sound a lot like Typical Government Stealth-Tax Bollocks. Having said that, Hollywood is a bloated, corrupt and corrupting monster. The more tools the world has to replace them, the better. If the price of freedom is crunchy cinema taxes everywhere, then I say we should all pay it and be damned. The fact that the MPAA’s move can only hasten their own demise (by increasing piracy) is merely the icing on the cake. I don’t live in Indonesia, but if I did, I like to think I’d have the strength of character to support the government’s move.
