1. I hadn’t watched most of them more than once and a good quarter of them not at all (they are still in plastic) and

2. if I resisted the impulse buy of a newly-minted DVD and just waited a couple of months to a year, I could buy the same movie or TV show for a fraction of the inflated original price. Fresh-off-the-press DVDs are just not worth the expense, plus if you give it time, it’s easier to figure out if you genuinely want the DVD or not.

I don’t think piracy had a lot to do with DVD sales plummeting. I think the market got saturated, the DVD-makers resisted capitalism and didn’t lower their prices when demand dropped, and quite frankly, we all ran out of room.

They’re going in the same direction as libertarians right now, but once they’ve replaced the studios and publishing houses, they’ll be the ones calling for crack downs on alternative sources that cut into their own profits and success.

Without content they’ll be dead. With stronger copyright enforcement they’d have less content and have to spend more policing their own sites.
