"Less known are the movie industry’s efforts to clamp down on copyright infringers who are defending their country’s interests on foreign soil."

Fight the good fight regarding downloading, but please don't patronize us with the suggestion that these people are "fighting for our freedom."

This is about nothing but numbers. The MPAA is in the job of producing "high piracy" figures any place they can find them. Then these numbers are taken and used for "concessions", such as fees on blank media, Internet connections, etc. Your government will "save" them from this terrible wrong by allowing them some new and interesting way to take your money to correct this great wrong. And the cycle continues....

@PROUD SOLDIER

so you found scud missiles.. Where's the 'mass destruction' in that? If they'd contain chem/bacterial/nuclear material it would have been all over the news. So no WMD, just regular war gear.

And 'illegal'?? by whose laws?

To the other soldiers in this thread, and the haters,
im a pirate through and through. (and soldier which gets 2nd place)
I refused to even pay the 2 bucks for haji copies.
I used my 128k (16kb/sec) Sniper Hill connection and I downloaded every goddamn movie and TV show is wanted to see.
I was able to download a new movie every night (if it was 700mb)and if I needed more content than i could DL I gave my battle buddies the torrent files on thumb drives and we worked together to download the content we needed.
FUCK THE MPAA and Fuck the hajji's trying to sell me movies they downloaded off the pirate bay.
oh yeah fuck the soldier haters. I hope they president declares material law and I get to kill you and your family, legally of course ;)

one last thing LONG LIVE TPB!

"where were those weapons of “mass destruction” again?"

LMFAO... I have on my computer a picture I took when I was in Iraq when my unit siezed a battery of illegal scud missiles, plain as day. Those missiles have the range to reach Israel, and violated UN resolutions just like the 17 UN Resolutions that Iraq was already in violation of when we invaded.

You know, I could get all pissed at the anti-military shit people say, but I really dont give a fuck. I signed up for what I feel is right, and that is taking up arms to be ready to defend freedom. You are right, we arent fighting for your freedom over in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are fighting for other peoples freedom. Before we went into those countries, they were ruled by despots. YES, we killed civilians! plenty of them, but, if you want to make an omelet, you have to break some eggs. I met plenty of Iraqis who love having freedom. Sure, they hate living in a bombed out hut, but they like that US soldiers are willing to go in and fix it up for them. Before going into Afghanistan, they were even worse off than they are now, and the world is safer without the Taliban with power over a country, that is for sure. So yes, I am not actively defending our country, but I can tell you I am ready to fight and die for it any time. Ohh, and I love my Pirated scrubs, the office and hurt locker... and all the other movies and pornography ive downloaded, traded and purchased. I fucking earned that shit, just like any other grunt whos given time.

Ive read alot of ignorant posts on here, and it really disgusts me. I'm no fan of war, but fighting is my job, and my duty. Dont blame the soldiers, blame the politicians. If you knew anything of the sacrifices that we make, you would direct your ignorant bigoted hate elsewhere.

That Peter guy is a complete and total fucktard. Comment #5 btw for those who didn't read. Without those soldiers who you don't like you might as well let china or someone else take over because I'll tell you something. We might do stupid shit sometimes but other Countries do even worse (china especially).

Now I've vented. :)

“Oh god MPAA, give them a break. They are risking their life’s for you.”

    "Really ?
    I didn’t know the MPAA was in the oil-stealing and reconstruct-what-we-bombed business .
    Are they a subsidiary of Halliburton or something ?
    Since the US-troops are there to loot Iraq, why not loot some free entertainment between the child-killing ??"

If we get in trouble then they should as well. Why should soldiers get any special treatment? Just because they want to commit suicide and hang out with iraqis all day does not mean they can pirate and we can't... I say arrest them all!! and fine them billions.

@ all you sh@#heads that think soldiers are only there to rape, pillage and loot.....

Whether or not you agree with the war, GI's go to work everyday with YOU in mind. WE stand gaurd and fight for you. Were there mistakes made? Yes. But blame the politicians for them, the policy makers. Not the soldiers on the ground following orders. I served for a decade in the army with 2 of those years in Iraq. Did I buy pirated videos? Yes. But only when the legal dvds were not available. You see alot of our outposts have difficulty getting just essential items, nevermind the latest hit movie. So when the opportunity to watch a movie on your down time presents itself, you take it. You never know if that movie will be your last. Its not that we're proud of it, the majority of soldiers are law abiding citizens. We have a sense of honor and integrity beyond the norm and act accordingly in everything we do. I, for one, would buy the extremely low quality bootleg if thats all that was avail., and purchase the real copy when I could. Everyone I ever served with, followed this line also. We are not theives. If the industry has a problem, they should help to get their entertainment out to GI's in these inhospitable outposts. If they see a problem still persists, maybe then will they have an argument.

what kind of idiot are you!!!! are you suggesting that soldiers be allowed to steal material simply because they are fighting in Iraq??? REALLY?? so the military should be able to run red lights and steal bread from small owners simply because they fight in Iraq. what kind of sense does that make? these people are out there doing a job that they get paid to do. they are able to pay for these download just like everyone else. fighting in the military gives NO ONE the opportunity to steal.

funny that nobody actually knows the truth...

1. Soliders buy legal dvd's all the time on bases in iraq at the PX.

2. Iraqi's sell pirated dvd's on base and everybody buys them... but they are nowhere near the quality of legal dvds...

3. If the MPAA was really concerned about piracy overseas they'd work out a deal with the sovereign governments of those countries not act like idiot americans who have no concept of anything but american copyright law.

@96

How many innocent civilian lives have been lost as the result of the invasion of Afghanistan? Estimates suggest between 13,372 and 32,969, many of them children.

A bit disproportionate compared with the attack on the twin towers, don't you think?

I din't think I could dislike the MPAA more after seeing this Film Is Not Yet Rated and after they made scores of parents that take ratings seriously like its a law.

When will the MPAA realize they don't live in a sitcom show like Leave It To Beaver?

On the one hand, the law is the law and soliders abroad should have to follow it the same as the citizens back home.

On the other hand, fuck you, MPAA. Those guys *should* be getting movies for free. You ask me, anyone that spends his life getting shot at probably deserves a couple of free flicks. Assholes.

Let me make this perfectly clear I am not a racist. I'm just pointing out a fact. The MPAA and RIAA will never get into the Arab countries legally and are pissed off that they will never have control over the Middle Eastern countries media, because of one reason only. The MPAA and RIAA are all controlled by the Jews.

@158 Deltaplan
Your reply was a bit difficult to read but did get through it though.

Your welcome (reminder on Jericho).
I actually wondered if anyone would know the series (cut short by some corporate decision - read on the internet somewhere). Usually people only know the overhyped (crap) movies, series and talent(less) shows.

@161
Save the 65 dollars and go to an internet cafe in Iraq to communicate with family (yes, i know that i don't know your situation so i may see it wrong).

Also sorry, very offtopic.

You know, I just lost a lot of respect from the community I would have called peers or brothers....

Whether you agree with the war or not, or want to join up or not, doesn't fall anywhere into this story. You agree with the war and military service, thats great. You think all military service men and women should be shot and Bush brought to a war crime trial, thats great too. The story in itself had jack to do with either of those.

The MPAA is doing to the US troops just as bad(if not worse) than they do to the US citizens. We want our stuff in whatever medium we want, access to legal copies of media in the formats we choose, and the ability to take our media with us when and where ever we want. Worse is they never come at you like men, they use sneaky 3rd parties to track you sometimes coming back with false information, they go after the ISPs to get compliance instead of the user, and when they do go after users it's tactically planned to go after the ones with the most to lose and the least able to defend themselves.

After all of that a bunch of you morons want to argue right and wrong about something thats only bearing on the story is they might or might not be in the area, and nothing about that the RIAA/MPAA is doing the same stuff to you on a daily basis and you're no where near a battlezone....I'm disgusted by you guys.

I'm in Iraq right now, and oh lord did this make me lul. IF, by some miracle, they get a cease-and-desist order through the military's deployment mail system, then best of luck figuring out which soldier on a 100-person VPN network using satellite internet with shifting-IP addresses AND peerguardian was downloading a shit copy of Kick-Ass.

I am a US Soldier currently deployed to Baghdad.

Let me tell you what, there is no way in hell you can use P2P services effectively. There are WAY to many people using the same internet connect. Locally in my area you have a pretty fast network, however once you hit that SAT that (in my case linked to Germany) it bottlenecks. Average speed at night time (1600 to 0100) is roughly 6 to 10 KBs. Its just barely faster then dial up but not fast enough to load all the flash/ajax web of today.

The service that we have in my area also restricts P2P using packet sniffing and all kinds of other bandwidth throttling techs that will result in a 20 minute ban from the network if detected. Skype is pretty unsable unless used during off peak hours and yahoo messenger seems to be my only form of communication. This is at 65 dollars a month, not to mention a 5GB download limit or 30 days of service (whichever comes first). Just trying to talk to my wife gets frustating. Now with the pull out its getting easier to be here and its becoming more more like our involement with Korea then a "war zone". However with the above described connection, to download 10 meg files it takes 30 minutes, no way in hell am I going to or anyone else I know of going to risk their 5GB monthly limit and lose talking to family and friends over a movie we can get two bucks for. (Not to mention General Order #1 is suppose to prohibit all Porn material and they block a good portion of websites on these networks that we have to pay our money to use).

I will gladly pay 2 dollars to get a movie from the local dealer (not all of them are Iraqis, most dealers are acutally from other nations).

If your for the war, good for you, if your against the war, good for you. Anyone who has served did for one reason or another and unless your someone who has acutally been in for 30 + years, your usually on the receiving end of orders from someone higher then you so you drink water, drive on and complete the mission. In your down time you try to find something to do because the biggest problem with being deployed is trying to find things to do to pass the time.

Iraq does not have laws against illegal downloading. MPAA will have to take on the military in court for that one. That will never happen. They clearly only want money. Fuck you MPAA, I have a VPN set up for my friends in Iraq so they can specifically download illegal movies :)

156 May 17, 2010 at 10:30 by Whatever
@61 Deltaplan “Corporations with nukes”

Like “Jericho” (series)?

- - - -

I was actually thinking of several scenarios of potential misanthropic power play by corporations with too much power in the future.

But as i recall it, there are a couple of elements from Jericho which could in reality be a plausible manifestation in reality to the fiction regards nukes, reconfigured missing warheads or the suitcase type tactical's which...

Yes, there was a private army in there, wasn't there, so yes, that element comes into it.

That Jericho was actually pretty good, had forgotten all about it, may DL and watch it again as it happens, thanks for reminding me.

But what i was thinking about is based on current geopolitical and corporate events and scenarios to projection potentials.

But it is true to say, the people who devise these sci fi's do so for a few reasons, some dis/misinfo', some to convey a sub text or forms of symbolics to reality within the fiction, some just to wake people up and make them think, of course some are just sci fi and enjoyable nonsense but some have something deeper to impart if one can make sense of it.

The elements of Jericho weren't exactly what i was thinking of, but now you mention it, it was powerful corporate entity, nukes and private army trained up in the Iraq theatre etc, with the attempt to completely switch the balance of power, indeed.

I wasn't even thinking of the US but it is a big nation, so to make a point and get a global government to yield, i suppose a couple of cities in a state in the US with the threat of more secreted in many other and 'whoever' aren't saying where etc, would make that point much the same as causality scenario to nuclear device detonation(s) by misanthropic corporate elites as any and hold global government and governments of nations to ransom to gain global and domestic controls if they couldn't do so by conning the power from governments by changing this law and that then all of a sudden put several laws together and it adds up to governments are pushed aside into a global new world order of corporate slavery as wealth generations from the base of economic pyramids, the lower echelons, have been mined out and have dried up, which is what i consider will cause this to be triggered in the future, nothing more at the bottom to give up the ladder to the top elites in corporations, governments try to protect the masses, so corporates take over into a form of marshal control and mass slavery, we think there's no freedoms now, i say you wouldn't know what it is to lose civil freedoms in the potential future, it doesn't bear thinking about, we have a lot of freedom thank you and we shouldn't moan at governments, there are far worse things which could happen, people could find their revolution they call for heralds something much worse than consequences we have to tolerate as governments try to stabilise the peaks and troughs of market forces, i mean much of that is corporate manipulations, we give up on our governments, what do people think will replace it, who will fill the vacuum because it won't be some Utopian fluffy self autonomy among whatever peoples of whatever country.

Exactly, which is why i mention it.

Peace. : )

[Pardon off topic again.]

First, the MPAA are being total douches and since they won't make a legal and reasonable alternative available to the troops, screw them.

As to the troops, lay off them. Here's why:

They volunteered to join the military to protect this country, and took serious oaths towards that goal, bet that's better than any here dissing them.

They didn't choose to go over to Iraq, but they are there in what amounts to a warzone where people are trying to kill them!

Lastly, you can hate the policies and government heads (like bush) that put them there in the first place, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't support the troops, and wish them a safe (and speedy) return. They are your neighbors, friends, and family who volunteered to protect your asses from all threats foreign and domestic.

I was just wondering, if you don't like the interest rates the Feds set, do you go down and picket your local credit union? Learn to freaking identify the source, not jump at making scapegoats.
