Nasa is using BitTorrent for their “visible earth”project
Written by Ernesto on January 27, 2006Nasa is using BitTorrent for a while now. Recently however, they started a new project called “visible earth”. This massive image library offers several high quality pictures, and NASA is using BitTorrent to distribute these images.
So if you ever wanted to download a 2.9GB pic, here’s your chance.

the ‘photo’ is not 2.9 GB its 10.1 GB (10,879,774,720 bytes)
w00t !!!!!:-D
where you find this torrent file with photos on 10.1 GB i see just this http://veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov//7100/world.topo.bathy.200401.3×86400x43200.bin.gz.torrent
I’ve downloaded all but 2 pieces of this (512kb) using Azureus. These ones are failing over and over again (#2494 and #2968). If anyone knows whether the problem is on my end or relates to the torrent itself, please leave a comment.
Hmm, it seems to have finally got them.
why are there so many files of the same name but with different sizes?
I am loading on the 2,9GB pic and I’ve already loaded a 102MB pic, but I can’t open it. How can i open it??
Thanks!
Is there only ONE picture (that 2,9 GB one) or are there many pictures (like “earth lights” or “night earth”??)??
Aren’t there all packed in one archive?
And what are we supposed to open the image file with ?
Open the Image File with Photoshop, an 10 MB Image Eats my 1 GIG Ram, I’ve Never Tried with 2.9 GB one :p, Maybe They’ll open Only in NASA’s SuperComputers
Are ALL of those files the same picture (the earth) but with different qualities? Or do they depict something else?
Its all cool and fine to download a 2.9GIG photo. But what u ever gonna use it for? lol

Why can’t I open the images with the HTTP feed? I click on the link, and then it directs me to the page where the image should be shown, but then it stops loading, and the image never appears. By the way are ALL of those files the same picture (the earth), but with different qualities? Or do they depict something else?
