Essentially, yes, we do live as hostages. If you don't agree with the American Government and even try to act against it, you are charged with terrorism. If you happen to be in the middle class, like most in the country, you get hit with tax after tax after tax, and if some of the politicians had their way, you would get taxed on the taxes too, but they wouldn't call it a tax, they'd call it something else.

America's political landscape is in SERIOUS need of reform, and although I wouldn't go as far as to call the USA a Plutocracy, it is far from being a democracy. I've been an American Citizen all of my life (all 25 years of it), and all of the bs that's been coming out over the past decade, and getting worse as time progresses, has me wanting to renounce my citizenship in the USA, and become a citizen in another country... Canada, Ireland, England, Australia... just about anywhere except this stupid country that thinks that the only way to have peace is to constantly shove it's views on other countries, as if that's what they wanted.

I wouldn't say the world would be better off without the USA, because when the USA isn't shoving it's political and financial agendas down the throats of other countries, it actually does some good. I would say however, that the MODERN United States political system is corrupt and needs a shake up. Maybe the UN can step in, do an audit on the country, and investigate and force changes on this SERIOUSLY corrupt government.
