Nine Inch Nails Uploads New Album on Torrent Sites

Written by Ernesto on March 03, 2008

Nine Inch Nails has just released the first volume of their new album “Ghosts” on BitTorrent sites as a free download. The band encourages its fans to share the album with friends, post it on websites and play it on podcasts

nin ghosts“Ghosts” is released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license and can be shared freely, something their fans weren’t allowed to do when the band was held back by a record label.

In the release notes the band writes: “Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.”

This sounds is music to our ears, in more ways than one. For now, only the first volume has been uploaded onto BitTorrent sites, but the entire collection is available for download on the official website for only $5

“Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you’ll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file”. They further write in the release notes “But if you’re interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5.”

Trent Reznor, the frontman of Nine Inch Nails has always been a supporter of sharing music via BitTorrent, even when it’s copyrighted. He isn’t frightened of talking about file-sharing. Back in May 2007 he admitted to sharing himself: “I steal music too, I’m not gonna say I don’t” he said. Later that year, when OiNK was pulled offline he admitted that he was a member there ,and said , : “If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn’t the equivalent of that in the retail space right now.”

The new Nine Inch Nails album including artwork is available for download on the official site, as well as on The Pirate Bay and other BitTorrent sites.

I used to love the old Nine Inch Nails songs many years ago. The newer stuff over the last 10 years hasn’t been as good though. I tried the free download just out of curiosity to see how they are doing these days. The download failed every time, at around 1-3 MB into the 82 MB download. The connection was slow too, so maybe I’ll wait a few days.

I’ve been saying this is how bands should function for years. It’s a great idea to offer just the songs for free and for the fans that want an actual product to hold can pay a minimal amount and buy it directly from the band.

That way the band is the real winner here, not a record label. Nice job NIN.

Record Labels must disappear, and the Torrents are called to take their place… Its the evolution, baby… =)

Trent Reznor, like so many in the ‘new music industry’ can visualize the future. People like Mr. Reznor will bare the inheritance of this fantastic new medium, while the major labels fight the emergence of this magical time simply to protect their outdated meal-tickets. My hat is off, in honor, to Mr. Reznor. May you, and all visionaries of this time, have great financial success with all of your current and future releases.

OMG, Flac lossless equals 30-90 mb on each track! :P

Some people are still pirating Parts 2-4, even though he’s only asking $5 for the whole thing? That’s messed up. I can understand if the website is inaccessible, but I think people should make an effort to pay once the website is back up.

great initiative indeed, not that I would expect anything else then digital evolution from the best industrial band I know :P

And tough I support the idea of the null association (which is the label this album was published under meaning not really a label at all) And the pictures are simply astonishing,
I’m kinda dissapointed by the music itself.

I’m a big fan of anything instrumental and especially the work of NIN but compared to the instrumental work on for example The Fragile this somehow feels like a setback.
Maybe it’s because Trent somehow had to make 36 in a year or so, or it’s the second producer Atticus Ross to blame but even tough it’s good music Ghosts doesn’t meet the NIN standards in my eyes.

And I do agree that only having .mp3’s or flacs doesn’t give as much as satisfaction as having a (like in last album thermo-coated) cd and credit book of the band you really like…

But yeah, new NIN album !
I’m probably gonna listen to mostly this for the rest of the week while feasting my eyes upon the very nice pictures.

as for those 36 tracks in one year. That was 36 tracks in one week, which is even scarrier
