Its a great article, but if Digg comments are any indication, I think people are taking away the wrong message.

The article's message is anti- *MONOPOLIST* copyright institutions. Copyrights themselves aren't bad.

Digg comments seemed to show people were thinking if there was no copyrights and no ownership of ideas or creative content, that everything would be free and wonderful. They point to bands doing live shows to make money instead of selling albums.

The problem with this picture is that most areas of creative production can't sustain themselves the way a band doing live performances can. Also no copyrights means any band could take that music and do live shows of the same stuff. A more popular band could take songs from an unknown band, word for word, and note for note, and use their popularity along with other people's work to sell out shows.

Other media doesn't even have the option of doing live shows directly catering to audiences. Take movies. Jurassic Park would never have made back the hundreds of millions required to produce the cutting edge CGI if they didn't own the movie giving them the sole rights to sell tickets to shows. Without copyrights anyone could get a hold of the film and do free or reduced price showings at another theater. This would mean almost nobody would invest in creating cutting edge movies.

The end result is that our culture WOULD suffer because fewer people could make a living at creative content. Some would be produced by hobbyists, but it would be far far less - stifling the creative production of the culture.

Rick, the U.S. recording industry is getting crushed - not by fulfilling the demand of everyone's alleged right to own music with laws and bureaucrats - but by the free market, which settles these kinds of debates faster and more efficiently than any other economic system on the planet.

Rick, there is no confusion on my end. You're the one who wrote that artists "need no law to sustain their business." In fact, that statement is contradictory because the only way for that to be possible is to enact a new law to repeal the old law and make sure it doesn't return.

You have this ridiculous idea that all artists want to create the way you prefer. Not all musicians write their own songs, they buy them from songwriters. Not all musicians record in their own studios, they buy studio time, rent equipment. Not all musicians want to distribute their music. Not all musicians want to book their own tours. Not all writers want to publish their own book. Not all filmmakers finance their own movies. On and on and on. You fail to acknowledge any of this anywhere. All you do is assume that "culture" is automatically yours once it's released, thanks to Fundamental Right #4,581 in the mysterious Big List of Rights some bureaucrat keeps in a file cabinet.

You also wrote: "show me a professional rock guitarist who picks out the financial ledgers for some relaxation in their spare time?"

Joey Ramone did exactly that.
