O aXXo, Where Art Thou?
Written by Ernesto on March 31, 2009In what must appear like a lifetime to his loyal fans, the popular DVD ripper aXXo hasn’t uploaded any torrents for three weeks. As always, rumors surface that claim to explain the hiatus. Has aXXo been arrested, or transferred to one of the MPAA’s covert detention facilities? Did BitTorrent’s favorite uploader fall off a cliff?
The most recent torrent uploaded by aXXo dates back to March 11. In the days that followed, millions have been waiting anxiously for fresh content, performing their daily aXXo search on their favorite torrent sites in vain.
The aXXo brand has achieved cult status and for some has become synonymous with quality. Over the years aXXo has grabbed the attention of scammers, the mainstream press and even documentary makers. So, when he goes silent it is quickly noticed and the demand from his fans for news or an update quickly grows.
This isn’t the first time that aXXo has taken a break from releasing. Last year there were no new releases for a full four months but eventually aXXo made a glorious return with the topical release of “I Am Legend.” Little is known about the reasons behind aXXo’s current absence, although he has not disappeared completely.
We can confirm that aXXo has been logging into his account at Mininova, which means that we can safely conclude that aXXo is still among us. When he plans to surface again is unclear, but time will tell.
It is fascinating to see how aXXo has gathered a following of millions of people in the years after he started uploading his first torrent. As always, opinions differ and controversy always surrounds aXXo. He is God to some, while others despise him for his lack of crediting ‘The Scene’ but it’s difficult to criticize his commitment or appreciate the pressure he is undoubtedly under on a daily basis.
Fact is, however, that every aXXo upload is good for a guaranteed entry in our movie download charts, adding up to millions of downloads in a few weeks. It may be Hollywood’s worst nightmare, but many independent film producers will dream of having their films ripped by aXXo, ensuring that they are associated with a global brand with an unprecedented reach on BitTorrent.

There are a lot of other good uploaders out there. But aXXo has become a legend amongst uploaders. His name is often used by other uploaders in the hope of getting more downloads. I always like to see him uploading something, though ripping a movie is not that hard in these days.

I don’t particularly care about the quality of his releases. The point is you cannot stuff a 720p or 1080p movie into a 700 MB filesize. His releases are all essentially standard definition, and they look decent for that, but they look like crap compared to 720p or 1080p rips. I’ll stick to bluray.

I only downloaded one AXXO movie and i ended up buying the movie but since I learned how to rip DVDS, I just do it myself now, besides the MPAA is probably trying to track IP addresses of people downloaded his DVD Rips anyway.
I’ve never had any problems with his 700MB-videos,some of you just like bitch’en so that you can bitch about something.It’s a lot cheaper and faster to use a CD than a DVD.He seems to be one of the very few that can get such good quality out of only 700mb.

I’m with 36. Downloading movies is bitchwork, when you can get the quality you want by just renting a copy and ripping it yourself. If it’s not worth 5 bucks, it’s not worth watching anyway. And if you are only getting it to see if you want to buy it, the quality is of little concern. Hell you can get a dual layer burner for under $40US and not even have to worry about the art of compression, and the whole process is faster than downloading. It’s also easier on your transfer restrictions, if you have any, and prohibitively difficult to trace.

The facts are simple, alot of people just dont take everything into consideration.
The quality acceptable for most non-graphic intense movies.
The 700MB size is useful for burning onto CD’s so they dont stack up in the hard drive, but I think mostly it just helps with quick distribution. Sure your HD 1080p rips are better, nobody can argue that, but you CAN argue how aXXo has way more PEERS/SEEDS than a HD rip that is 4 gig minimum size and much less PEERS/SEEDs. What this allows people to do is quickly download movies without wasting a lot of time/bandwidth, if it turns out that you then require the HD res then buy it or download it.
His releases are indeed consistent, it can certainly take the headache out of searching for a good release since when you see the aXXo tag its almost a guarantee. The same can be compared when searching for products, Samsung vs Acer you know the samsung is going to be good but that doesn’t mean the Acer is crap.
aXXo releases are what they are, take it or leave it. When you act elite and call every aXXo fan a noob, it says a lot about your own pathetic maturity level and intelligence.
Axxo is the McDonald’s of ripping, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s decent quality, it’s playable on just about everything and it fits onto a CD (as opposed to a DVD-R) disc.
If I like a movie I’ve downloaded, chances are I’ll go out and buy it. I use torrents simply to view stuff that interests me (foreign language movies, documentaries etc), stuff that I’m 50:50 on (mainstream Hollywood movies with mixed reviews) or simply stuff that I’d otherwise wait for to pop on TV, but wouldn’t pay DVD rental for (any Ben Stiller movie).
Axxo’s releases are more than good enough to enjoy without worrying about too much pixellation, jumps glitches or sync problems. It may be easy for many thousands of people to get similar quality, but the truth is they’re not doing it on an almost daily basis.
What’s left out there is a lot of uploads of questionable quality. Hence Axxo’s popularity. You know what you’re getting, it’s always the same quality (whether you like that grade of quality or not) and there are over 1,000 torrents to choose from. Like I said, the McDonald’s of ripping.
The other thing I’d point out is that not everyone has blazing fast broadband, a stack of recordable DVDs and no download cap on their internet service. Axxo makes rips to fit onto blank CDs. If you prefer something fancier, move on, nothing to see here. Many of us are quite happy and grateful for the content and service he provides.
he’s a shit, you can’t just compare his rips to Devise or even better Flawless DVDRips.I know they’re doing also HRRips, HDRips, BDRips,BRRips etc. and aXXo does only DVDRips so I suggest compare only them. Axxo shrinks resolution, bitrate down to even 800kbps or 700kbps with 2:20 or more films to fit it on 700MB. I think that even other shitty rippers like FXG or KLAXXON are better because they (sometimes) rip more than 700MB when film is long.

I have a hard time understanding the aXXo bashing. It is so simple, if you don’t like his releases – don’t download. But for so many of us, we don’t have to second guess his quality and due to his popularity the seed/leech ratio is good, so you can get his movies relatively fast.

As far as scene is concerned..let us be honest..while there are some great rippers there..not ALL are good..and their stupid scene rules, rarred files ( atleast 35 connected rar file for a movie ) and the fact that they give a damn’bout p2p is a complete turn-off.
Since aXXo is already a legend..he shld now only release movies of 1400 mb ( may be two files of 700 mb each..for those who wants to burn it on a cd ) and still these will attract millions of downloaders and seeders and earn some respectibility amongst filesharers who has slowly shifted to better qlity higher bit rate rips !

Just because I don’t idolize someone who does what damn near anyone could do (make stupidly sized rips with terrible settings/bitrates) there’s something wrong with me? Out of 600 backups (hah) on my hard-drive none of them are axxo.
The reason is because all that stuff is very easily found everywhere else for free, at a better quality or DVD size. I recently replaced the last 2 axxo rips I had (which were bad quality) with my own copies from the library (the movies were Match Point and You Kill Me, if anyone cares).
I am much more thankful of the rippers that can find rare movies (sickboy88) and/or custom subtitle and can rip at a GOOD QUALITY, not just “acceptable”.

Where as on private sites there’s a strive to always seek out the best quality, and people welcome others to challenge their own release and up the quality. I’ve seen quite a few people do some amazing collab releases, such as combining video from one DVD release, audio from another source, and custom subtitles.

People downloaded 700 MB rips when div3 and mp3 were popular and state-of-the-art. Now we have much more efficient codecs like H.264 and AAC. So you get much better quality for the same price. It’s certainly a far cry from the original DVD quality most of the time but it’s likely better than what they used to broadcast on TV before digital HDTV. I’d say it’s still even better than what they broadcast over DVB today. Not everyone is picky on quality. Actually, most people aren’t. Especially if it’s for free or cheap. So the quality is certainly acceptable for a large number of people. If it’s not sufficient for you, well, your problem.
I don’t know where aXXo is, but I hope he uploads soon.

After ripping all 300+ of my movies, yes, movies are easy to rip. But not all. Even so, its amazing how many people screw it up (crappy audio, synch, etc). there are normally 50 different rips of a new movie as it comes out, its just too easy to get the aXXo torrent and KNOW its going to be good. That, and 3 billion other people are already seeding it.

700 MB surely doesn’t satisfy for the HDTV home-cinema setup – but it is absolutely sufficient to “just view” a movie on your PC to get to know it – and don’t want to waste time and bandwidth for movies that one wouldn’t want to watch in the cinemas after all.
If you actually happen to like the movie that much, you still can download a HD-rip or even better: buy it for yourself!
And the thousands of downloaders that provide a loyal community that actually seed back, sustain and spread aXXo’s uploads, just show how many people enjoy and appreciate exactly that!
The people are just voting with their clicks and their seeding – and no bitching of envious wannabes can depriciate that with hollow and spiteful words.
Others can make rips too, but aXXo’s has been doing an excellent job consistantly and his success is earned fair and square.
I use other releases and acknoledge the work of other release groups as well, but aXXo’s name has honestly earned his popularity due to the excellent service he has provided to the bittorrent community for so long now.
I hope aXXo enjoys his well deserved hollidays – and knows to distinguish between nagging little fucktards and his grateful users.

While aXXo is great for having a lot of new movies, all of which are extremely well seeded, he is far from celebrity.
he’s like a business, people will love it when his service is good, but the second it fails, they’ll replace him.
so if he’s off on vacation or something, power to him. but if he’s having some stupid celebrity moment to get attention, screw him he’s done.
Someone new will take his place.

On the remote chance that i like the movie enough to watch it again i will tell netflix and they will send it to me in a day and i can make a copy. The only people that cry about 700mb movies are the same losers that sell homemade bootlegs out of the back of their jalopies for $5.

Thinking about it, you are kind of right. Unless you really enjoy the movie there is no reason to have it in a higher quality.
But even still I find it kind of pointless to even spread such terrible quality shit around. If only hi-quality stuff was was uploaded people wouldn’t waste their bandwidth on the bad movies, and they wouldn’t get as much attention as they do now.
I just feel like these terrible quality releases are cluttering everything up and holding technology back.

The reason why we have 700MB movies is that they take up less space (important when you have hundreds of movies). I guess they can be burnt to cds. Also many countries have caps or charge for bandwidth on the internet so when youre paying $1 a GB you will not want to download to many movies over 1GB.

nothing’s getting cluttered, it’s the internet. and if only high end stuff was uploaded, there’s just be a lot less downloads. Most people are perfectly happy downloading a bunch of perfectly bearable 700mb movies, watch them once or twice, and delete. 3-7 gigs isn’t a good use of space for most people for movies. Let the scene and their followers say whatever they want about it, but it’s the facts, the majority prefers the lower quality releases because they’re easy, quick, and look just fine.

I tried doing one a while back, but at 700mb the quality was a lot worse than the stuff aXXo comes out with, so I just downloaded aXXo versions of my stuff instead. It would be nice if I could do my own stuff too though, cos it’s not all up there.
And I don’t like going bigger than 700mb cos my HD is nearly full and I can’t afford a new one :)

Why would you think that just because he uploads something that he personally likes it?
The thing people like about aXXo is the comfort of knowing that it will be good. When somebody does a torrent search for a movie, and an aXXo one pops up, more times than not they’ll go for it. It’s not that aXXos torrents are of exceptional quality, it’s more the fact that you know they won’t be bad.

aXXo= MPAA honeypot now, I will no longer download anything from aXXo regardless of quality.

I’m glad for anyone who rips movies and shares them with us.
Although I have long since moved on. The 700MB limit is antiquated as we now have flash usb drives that hold gigs of data for cheap prices. Nothing beats a H.264 dvdrip at 1g-1.5g or a H.264 BRrip at 2.5g-3g. Now that’s quality for size and you usually get surround sound with it!
Why do people keep bringing CDs and DVDs into this? Doesn’t anyone know how to set up their machine to stream it. Hell if you have an Xbox (assuming you’re running windows) you can stream stuff over your local network, and it does all the set up for you. Who honestly burns them to disk just to play them? It just seems like a waste of a disk to me.
As far as the seeds/peers ratio on most of the HD rips go, it doesn’t really matter all that much unless there are only a few (under 20) seeds. If you actually set up your clients properly even 5-10 GB HD rip can be downloaded in about a day. Set it up before you go to bed, and it will be done before evening, or even noon, the next day.
Assume you download at a measly 200 KBps. 10 Gigs is only about 11 hours.
So who is this “aXXo” on mininova releasing xvids’ movies?

I really don’t understand all the fuss over aXXo, or any other transcoders out there. I like my movies to have come from a DVD source, not an already compressed xvid release. You can adjust brightness and apply other sorts of filtering using ffdshow if you really want. I understand people on slow connections wanting small files. I just don’t get why aXXo has gotten so much praise for shrinking down releases.
My personal opinion is that if your gonna rip a disc, it should be done as an ISO… anything less is pointless.
That being said, if all you want is the movie, aXXo is the way to go.
Very few films are worthy of more than 700mb (read:keeper)… Transformers and Dark Knight would be good examples… and if your a collector, you’d probably have bought them in the store anyway.

The fact is that public tracker users are too newb and/or stupid to find anything of quality so substandard (in many cases) aXXo is their way of finding stuff.
If you use private trackers, IRC, Usenet or have scene axx everything is real, no fake files like shitty public trackers.
aXXo encodes everything to 700MB size while scene groups follow warez standards which stipulate that films over a certain length – 90 mins if I recall right, must be encoded to 1.4GB. This is to maintain a quality level that aXXo just doesn’t have in many encodes he does.
Once again, aXXo provides a service to lazy, stupid and newb people who just don’t know any better. The “public” who aren’t stupid, lazy or newb know better and can get every film that aXXo encodes plus thousands more in better quality – it really isnt that hard.

Not everyone has the available bandwidth to be downloading 1080P/720P BluRay rips, some don’t even have the available bandwidth for 1.4gig rips…
To those people, rippers like aXXo is a god send. They get to watch all the new movies without chewing through their monthly data cap in 2 days.
I don’t worship aXXo, but I appreciate him. He makes it easy to find new movies. He rips almost every major film release. The video is never corrupt. He never uses weird codecs or file formats. They always works “as-is” on my media server. He never stuffs his releases in BS *.rar files. It’s never mislabeled or password protected. The quality is good to people who don’t freak out about HD resolution (the majority of people). The file size is convenient.
I agree that quality could be better, but with a finite amount of disk space (I have ~5 TB) it seems unreasonable to collect files that are three times as big, when the improved quality only marginally increases my enjoyment of the film. If at all.
It always amazes me how people will go nuts about Axxo as if DVd ripping and uploading is some secret club that he’s ruining or something like that.

While the name aXXo means quality on public trackers all aXXo does is take scene ripped DVDRip content and then rips them as his own making very few if any changes to the content. If you want people who do quality work then try names like STG or KingBen along with a few other p2p groups as they can take scene or original content and turn it from coal to diamonds.

This release suffered from undercropping. That the reason Devise released it as internal. But the stupid Axxo, probably has no idea what internal means. He re-encoded the movie with different resolution, but the final aspect ratio was still undecropped. lol What a jurk!!
A month later, the final release came out.

That’s a simple example. As i told before, i’ve also seen aXXo releasing “Dvrips”, the day after R5 releases, appear on the net.

Reason1: Scene releases get distributed via warez-sites in first place.
Reason2: Many people cannnot understand that aXXo’s releases is a bunch of crap.

Some people, like me still have that 75 pound television set where I just recently went out to buy a TV converter to pick up signal for my tv off my antena. Say I live in the past but not everyone can afford to pay out 2 grand for a new tv when the old $150 version works just fine, and not everyone has a 7.1 stereo system or even a surround sound 5.1 Dolby. You can say maybe I should pump some money into my entertainment system but I would rather just pump my money into my kid’s education.
Stop thinking that everyone is pathetic just because they don’t have what you have. Axxo use to perform a service well and on a consistant basis… but now yes his quality in his releases have drop so much that I no longer even care about downloading to be honest.
There are these kiosks at our grocery stores where I live that now rent new DVDs for $1 a night. Pretty hard to replace that concept to go rent one and burn it. For the “VERY FEW” worthwhile movies being pumped out of Hollywood and around the world I swear I think in the past year I might have noticed maybe 5 movies all year I would think were worth spending 2 hrs to watch.
It is not P2P that is killing the movie industry, they are committing business suicide with the crap they try to sell and protect like it is a valuable asset when it belongs in the Trash.
Maybe Axxo is making a statement, it’s not even worth ripping movies lately risking being caught for garbage movies. Let the movie industry burn in hell and keep chasing their tail to protect their crap.
Maybe this is where Axxo went – he’s given up on movies LOL or he too rents them for a buck a night.
Hey – if Blockbuster (a large movie rental chain in the US) is pretty much going tits up that should say something to the movie industry. People cannot dish out piles of cash for entertainment purposes in these tough financial times.

aXXo is the modern day Robin Hood. He takes from the rich and makes it available for people like me who live in countries which don’t have very good download bandwidth and money to watch films for US$25. And we don’t have the freedom to download multiple copies to find out if the quality of the movie is good.
aXXo is a charity organization. Orphanages can afford to watch movies. aXXo is a educational organization. We learn so much by watching american movies.

Taking other’s DVDSCR (screener) release, and then uploading it as DvDrip is the most ridiculous thing i’ve ever seen! And there are so many people who bite… and think that they’re actually downloading DvDrip version. lol

Axxo is a legend indeed and I’ve been downloading from him for quite a long time but it’s time for him to move to the next level and encode in h.264. That’s why for the past 6 months I’ve been downloading from uploaders like SecretMyth, NewArtRiot, Titan, PaulX, etc..
For those who complain about download limit, just know that a movie encoded in h.264 with a size of 700MB is far more superior in quality than a similar movie encoded according to the MPEG-4 ASP standard (using avi as container) which aXXo uses.
I agree, H264 should be used instead of XVid/Divx and AAC should be used instead of MP3,and as for the Avi container that should be replaced with MP4 container.
Some are happy with Axxo’s released and some are not,as quality is a preference thing,ie some are happy to eat sausages and vegies for dinner while other feel that they must have lobster
he has certainly made a name for himself though,which in result he would be a target for the mpaa,and since the mpaa and the companys they hire only have limited resources leaving less resources to find other potential targets
so to those at are not happy with his releases and get rips releaed by others ,at lease he does take some of the heat off your prefered sources which for you is a good thing
