All the networks just had Obama on with his first post-election news conference. It was real fun listening to him stutter and stammer his way through it. Like any politician he wound up saying nothing. Without the teleprompter he really sucks.

And the networks will say “No you can’t”.

And then all the filesharers say “LOL GTFO”.

There’s a number of things wrong with this. First off, Swedish ministers aren’t allowed to micromanage individual cases or how the laws are applied like they are in the USA. The ministers simply can’t tell the police what to do or not to do. If they did, they’d break the law.

Secondly, hosting, indexing, and tracking torrent files isn’t illegal (yet). Even though individual TPB users break the law, TPB itself doesn’t. You could argue that TBP assist copyright infringement, but, well, you could sue Google for that, too. Or a printing press manufacturer.

Thirdly, even if it WAS illegal, and the ministers had the authority to do something about it, there’s nothing they could do. You can’t take down TPB’s servers, because they have them scattered across several countries, and no-one, not even TPB crew, knows where all of them are. They’ve said they wouldn’t tell, either, even if they were sent to prison. And domain/IP blocking can easily be circumvented.

Fourth, even if you somehow manage to get rid of TPB and outlaw file sharing, you’re just digging yourself a deeper hole. Because then the demand for anonymous, encrypted, p2p, file sharing software would skyrocket. There already are quite a few darknets like that, they just aren’t very popular yet. But once they get mainstream, you’ll have no way what-so-ever to catch pirates, or anyone else sharing information you don’t want them to. And if you still try to stop it by putting cameras and microphones everywhere, to catch people in the act, well, it’s bound to get rather pitchforky then.
