1. When you buy a movie/cd/vinyl you are not buying a piece of plastic you are buying the right to listen to or view the music or movie contained in that ‘plastic’ packaging.
Having over the years bought many LPs made from poor quality recycled vinyl, original movies recorded on cheap VHS tape and bought CDs that we were told would last forever. I suggest therefore that I have a right to obtain free of charge from wherever I can ‘clean’ (digital) updates of music and movies I have already purchased. Oink was an excellent source for many of the more obscure 1960s and 1970s music already in my collection and also for many no longer available elsewhere.

2. Avoiding Music and Movie business hype.
Having listened many times to the man with the deep voice telling me to go buy/see the latest comedy/adventure/blockbuster and been sadly disappointed that I have wasted my money on a load of crap. I can now dl a reasonable copy, watch it and then if I enjoy it I can go buy it. Many of my DVDs and CDs in my collection are as a result of this.

3. I don’t have to listen to the radio and the inane ramblings of DJs.
I could dl music via sites like Oink check it out and if I like it go buy it. Many of my CDs and movies I would not have bought had I not downloaded them first

Maybe when the record and movie industry’s massive piles of cash have dwindled enough for them to see over them to the real world they may begin to understand the meaning of the word ‘progress’.

These are the same police that were asking Mr. Ellis newbie-level questions after his arrest? These are the same authorities who handed the server IP to the IFPI/BPI to put up a threatening substitute home page, something that was certainly not legal since no charges had been issued and the warrant and seizure was for investigation. They did accomplish their objective (BPI/IFPI): OiNK was shut down, almost certainly forever.

And according to articles and posts I recall from the weeks following the takedown, Mr. Ellis indicated that he was released on his own recognizance after a few hours of question. (No bail posted, just signature and agreement to appear as required.)

I can see that there are cases where the police need special privileges like that to save lives, so be it; in America, “land of the junk lawsuit”, the cops ‘d be tied up in court 24/7 fighting greedy get-rich-quick jerks and their lawyers, instead of policing the streets.
But when they abuse their privileges, then it has to stop.

They are not legally untouchable; they are untouchable in British civil court. I should think that gross negligence [not following up on their responsibility to check that the victim was, in fact, committing illegal acts], theft [of servers and data], purgery [lying about the reasons for the erase], and corruption [somebody somewhere received something for sending the police on this illegal act], etc. are valid reasons to open a criminal court proceeding on these “officers of the law”;

Sure, when it went down, I missed it, but to be honest, when Demonoid went down, it effected the BT community a lot more than the fall of OinK(At least for .flac traders) Anything that could be found on OinK, could be found there, or at a similar place. I think the “OinK snobs” need to come down off their cloud and realize that OinK wasn’t the big dog on the block. 99% of everything found on OinK made it’s way to the rest of the bit-torrent world, and a lot of it was out elsewhere before it made it over to OinK. I guess some of my fellow OinKers just never bothered looking around enough to know this. Either that, or their heads were so far up the pigs ass, that they wouldn’t take the time to notice.

The downfall of OinK was a slight blow to the BT community, but the downfall of Demonoid(if it stays off-line), was more like an A-Bonb going off. Just as many pre-releases and hard to find torrents were shared over there.

I liked the community, despite it coming off as somewhat snobby. That being said, I disagree with your statement about the content.

Whenever I found a new band that I wanted to listen to, my first reaction was to check out their myspace. After that, or if there were no myspace or other samples, I would type “oink ” into my browser, and off I went. Oink had a fantastic database of content. You are wrong when saying that Oink were not essential compared to Demonoid – In fact, its the the other way around, atleast for me. Most of the time, Demonoid gave me none, while Oink most of the time actually had the album I was looking for. If not, I would request it, and at max, it took a couple days for it to be uploaded (apart from pre-release requests).

Besides, alot of the time, you could not be sure that the info in the torrent, the quality specified etc. were correct on demonoid.

I miss Oink so much. Even more so than I missed Audiogalaxy.

I was a major demonoid user until it was shut down, and I never could find anybody who was willing to send me an invite to a private tracker. I would LOVE for somebody to send me one. Actually i-tunes came out with select higher quality releases, 256 kbps AAC encoding, for a $1.30. Not that it really matters because itunes (and ipods) are a gigantic croc of shit ne way.
